Abstract
Abstract
Culvert of the harbor canal in Duisburg
As part of the infrastructure project “Renewal of the OB‐Karl Lehr Bridge, 2
nd
construction section“ in Duisburg, the culvert and supply line relocation under the port canal has been carried out as an early action since 2019. The culvert, constructed by controlled pipe jacking over a distance of 220 m, will in future accommodate all the supply lines currently being transferred with the bridge structures and thus enable an accelerated construction sequence for the replacement of the bridges. In addition to the actual pipe jacking, the very deep construction pits/shafts of approx. 30 m posed a challenge for planning and execution. The present paper explains the development and technical aspects of the planning and provides insights into the constructional implementation of the special civil engineering measure. In addition, compact information is provided about the main project and the currently ongoing replacement construction of the Ruhr Bridge and Harbor Canal Bridge.

•Immersed tunnel in Gothenburg, Sweden, with three 102 m long elements.•Urban construction with limited space, difficult transport logistics, ship traffic.•Soil conditions with 60–100 m of soft clay ...layer, difficult deep excavations.•Construction pit with steel tubes, underwater excavation and underwater bottom slab.•Tunnel elements temporarily supported on steel piles while being sandflowed.
The Marieholm tunnel is a part of the Marieholm Connection Project, which connects the Port of Gothenburg and the Industries at Hisingen with the central part of Gothenburg. The closed section is 500 m long with three traffic lanes in each direction. This paper presents some of the main decisions and challenges, which shaped the construction of the Marieholm project. The challenge of the project was construction in the city with limited space and difficult transport logistics together with ongoing ship traffic. Both up and down stream an existing tunnel and bridges limited transportation width and depth. Soil conditions with 60–100 m of soft (Gothenburg) clay layer made deep excavations difficult. The immersed tunnel was constructed as three 102 m long elements constructed one after the other in a dry dock within the alignment. The construction pit was built with steel tubes as retaining walls, underwater excavation and a bottom slab cast underwater. During construction wall deflection, bottom heave and strut forces were closely monitored. The tunnel elements were temporarily supported on steel piles while being sandflowed.

Abstract
Execution of a building pit under Amsterdam Central Station using ground‐freezing technology
Construction of a building pit underneath one of the busiest railway stations in the Netherlands, with as a little disturbance to the public as possible, calls for innovative engineering solutions. This paper focuses on the design and execution methods for the project “Cuyperstrap”, a staircase connecting the entrance hall of the Amsterdam Centraal Station and the subjacent metro distribution level. Due to the challenging boundary conditions, e.g. limited workspace, high groundwater level and fragile adjacent structures, common methods for constructing building pits were not applicable. Using a retaining wall consisting of artificially frozen ground Max Bögl BV was able to execute the project successfully. Artificial ground freezing is a technique commonly known in tunnelling and mining projects, but as is shown here can also be applied to other fields of structural engineering. Freezing the pore water in the ground increases the bearing strength and makes the frozen area impermeable. The iteratively refined design included structural and thermal calculations, taking into account the on‐site conditions. Starting with drilling of the freeze pipes and installation of the site equipment the construction period commenced at the beginning of 2019. The freezing period started in April and ended in November, after completion of the outer concrete structure. The Cuyperstrap was be opened to the public in July 2020.
Viereth weir: advantages of continuous processing with BIM in the complex design of hydraulic steel structures
The movable structures on locks and weirs are components located at the interface between mechanical and civil engineering. The handling requirements of hydraulic steel structures are special. It starts with technical processing – different bearing conditions, different static systems and movements are to be considered; vibration may also be a challenge. Dealing with these conditions in a planning process makes hydraulic steel structures the most complex supporting structures. The following is a report on the general conditions relating to weirs and especially the given project. The resulting structures ranging from the upstream inspection gate to the construction pit confinement and the actual weir body are contemplated. The consistent application of BIM offers specific opportunities and conditions for this category of structures; approaches for solutions are described below.

Abstract
Rheinkraftwerk Iffezheim hydropower plant – Construction of a 5
th
turbine – Special challenges of structural engineering in the design phase
The hydropower plant Iffezheim at the Rhine was extended by a 5
th
turbine adjacent to the existing structure. As a special feature the construction was build within an oval construction pit devoid of braces underneath the constricted space conditions between the existing power plant and fish pass with a weir turbine. Barriers from the building period of the existing plant led to disruptions when making the construction pit and caused delays in the scheduled construction time. In order to speed up the planned construction process the procedures of building the power plant underground construction and the start of the main installation of the machine construction were optimized again. The developed measures required changes on the static concept in making the solid construction and interaction with the construction pit, which had major effects on the structural planning. The preparation and inspection of the necessary calculations and planning took place during the project implementation of the first construction phases and was thus extremely critical to scheduling. Through the optimized construction process during the construction of the solid building it was possible to compensate partly for the occurred extensions of construction‐completion time eventually.
