This book demonstrates the advantage of a corpus based approach to Arabic, and presents an overview of current research on the Arabic language within corpus linguistics. Dealing not only with modern ...standard Arabic, the book also considers classical and colloquial forms.
Current corpora are invaluable resources for generating accurate and objective analyses of patterns of language use. However, spoken corpora are effectively mono-modal, presenting data in the same ...physical medium text. The reality of a discourse situation is lost in its representation as text. Using multimodal data sets when conducting corpus-based pragmatic analyses is one solution. This book looks at multimodal corpora in some depth, using backchanneling as the conversational feature to be analysed. It provides a bottom-up investigation of the issues and challenges faced at every stage of multimodal corpus construction and analysis, as well as providing an in-depth linguistic analysis of a cross section of multimodal corpus data. The collaborative and co-operative nature of backchannels is highlighted in this book and an adapted pragmatic-functional linguistic coding matrix for the characterisation of backchanneling phenomena is presented. Dawn Knight also looks at possible directions in the construction and use of multimodal corpus linguistics.

This paper is about a series of experiments conducted at the University of Malaga as part of a PhD thesis with students from the fourth and final year of the Degree in Translation and Interpreting. ...The experiments were done in order to analyse whether the use of a corpus management programme in the preparation of the vocabulary for an interpreting assignment had an impact on their interpreting outputs. Our hypothesis was that the use of the programme would have a positive impact on interpreting assignments. To carry out a case study, for some experiments the students prepared the vocabulary in advance without the use of the programme, and for other experiments the vocabulary was prepared using the programme. The results from the different groups of students were compared to see which of the groups performed better, the students who prepared the vocabulary with the use of the corpus management programme, or those who did not use the programme.

Input a Word, Analyze the World represents current perspectives on Corpus Linguistics (CL) from a variety of linguistic subdisciplines. Corpus Linguistics has proven itself an excellent methodology ...for the study of language variation and change, and is well-suited for interdisciplinary collaboration, as shown by the studies in this volume. Its title is inspired by the use of CL to assess language in different registers and with a variety of purposes. This collection contains thirty contributions by scholars in the field from across the globe, dealing with current topics on corpus production and corpus tools; lexical analysis, phraseology and grammar; translation and contrastive linguistics; and language learning. Language specialists will find these papers inspiring, as they present new insights on aspects related to research and teaching.
