This paper examines exclusionary practices allegedly used by Intel to maintain its dominant position in sales of microprocessors for IBM-compatible personal computers (PCs), focusing primarily on the ...preferential allocation of scarce product among customers. The paper considers the period 1991-93, which encompasses the transition from the 386 to the 486 microprocessor generation and the entry of several competitors. We test for two conditions that are necessary for exclusionary practices to be successful. First, using the market definition approach that is common to antitrust analyses in the US, we demonstrate that, at the upstream microprocessor level, Intel had monopoly power in a distinct market for high-end microprocessors. In particular, pricing data show that the effects of entry were localized at the low end of Intel's product line. Secondly, we identify four conditions that are sufficient for exclusionary practices to be successful, and show that the downstream PC manufacturing stage has these characteristics. Finally, we consider potential explanations for preferential allocation that are based on efficiencies, and outline a methodology for calculating the effect of exclusionary practices on the prices received by two of Intel's competitors
The case study presented highlights the pathological physiological genesis and evolutionary dynamics of different neurogenic diseases which in most cases can cause changes in the ...neuro-myo-arthro-kinetic apparatus such as functional incapacity through installed paralysis. Repercussions of neurological conditions are also harmful to the normal function and n development of the neurological child, the earlier the disease is established or the greater the complexity of the neurological pathology. Physical therapy through the variety of methods and techniques used judiciously can lead to the realization of a program for the preservation of somatic-functional structures, preventing their deconditioning
Purpose. The aim of the survey on risk management in Croatian museums was to collect comprehensive data on the preparedness of Croatian cultural organisations for various risks in order to better ...assess, prevent and reduce risks.
Approach and methodology. Against the background of the devastating damage caused by the March 2020 earthquake to cultural heritage in Zagreb, Croatia, the International Institute for the Restoration of Historical and Artistic Works, IIC-Croatian Group, conducted a national survey under the name of RIZIK. The online survey included 73 questions divided into four categories: general information about the institution, the property including buildings and collections, followed by questions on finances and audience. Questions on safety and regular maintenance, work and business plans, essential emergency services in case of danger, possible hazards and risks affecting the buildings and the collection, along with questions on measures that can help prevent or minimise risks and damage to the collection, the building, staff, and visitors, are part of the survey.
Findings. As many as 188 museums were invited to participate in the survey, more than 100 responded, although some answered the questions only partially. This paper shows a cross-section of the general situation in Croatian museums, addresses the problem of modernising exhibition and depository spaces, describes the idea behind the survey, and discusses its results and possibilities for enhancement.
Originality/value. The RIZIK survey is the first risk management survey sent to all museum institutions in the Republic of Croatia. The collected data are an important first insight into the current state and standards in Croatian museums, galleries and collections. Based on the results obtained, the survey participants can identify areas where they can strengthen or change their work practices, organisation and further planning.
The destruction of forests, fires and illegal logging is one form of disturbance to forest resources and lately more and more frequent. Fires and deforestation pose enormous losses and the impact is ...vast, even across national borders. On the other hand, prevention and control efforts were undertaken so far have not provided optimal results. Therefore, it needs a thorough improvement, especially those related to the welfare of marginalized communities or in forest areas. Various improvement efforts are carried out, among others, in the field of extension to the community especially related to the factors causing forest fires, the enhancement of the capacity of government apparatus especially from the Ministry of Forestry, the improvement of facilities to prevent and overcome the forest fires and illegal logging, legal reform and the application of sanctions in assertive.
There are a variety of anesthetic management options during surgery, and these are constantly evolving. Both innovative and confirmatory research are important if the scientific community aims to ...develop and improve people’s quality of care. This reprint introduces new avenues and covers questions regarding innovative anesthetic techniques and unmet needs after surgery, paving the way for future improvements. It can be useful for both clinicians and clinical researchers, especially in light of the expansion of concepts like personalized care.
The role of grain boundary type in the early stages of dynamic damage evolution in copper has been investigated. Through a combination of polycrystalline and large-grained specimens, it has been ...shown that Σ3 and low-angle boundaries are resistant to void nucleation during shock loading to peak compressive stresses between 1.5 and 2.5GPa. It is postulated that these boundaries promote slip transmission or secondary slip activation and thereby relieve the stress concentrations necessary for void nucleation at a boundary.
Increased von Willebrand Factor (vWF) activity mediates platelet adhesion and might be a contributor to the development of thrombotic complications after surgery. Although in vitro studies have shown ...that hyperoxia induces endovascular damage, the effect of perioperative supplemental oxygen as a possible trigger for increased vWF activity has not been investigated yet. We tested our primary hypothesis that the perioperative administration of 80% oxygen concentration increases postoperative vWF activity as compared to 30% oxygen concentration in patients at risk of cardiovascular complications undergoing major noncardiac surgery. A total of 260 patients were randomly assigned to receive 80% versus 30% oxygen throughout surgery and for two hours postoperatively. We assessed vWF activity and Ristocetin cofactor activity in all patients shortly before the induction of anesthesia, within two hours after surgery and on the first and third postoperative day. Patient characteristics were similar in both groups. We found no significant difference in vWF activity in the overall perioperative time course between both randomization groups. We observed significantly increased vWF activity in the overall study population throughout the postoperative time course. Perioperative supplemental oxygen showed no significant effect on postoperative vWF and Ristocetin cofactor activity in cardiac risk patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery. In conclusion, we found no significant influence of supplemental oxygen in patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery on postoperative vWF activity and Ristocetin cofactor activity.
Investigation of floating screed drying and microbial growth after irregular moisture conditions.
Floors of heated solid buildings are mostly constructions of screeds with insulation layers underneath. These floating floor screeds are rarely sealed. If a leak occurs, water enters through the joint between walls and screeds and other apertures into the section under the insulation layer. Concrete floors are usually watertight enough to keep this water in the section between the concrete floor and the insulation layer. If there is enough humidity on the surface of the components, the germination and growth of microbiological creatures starts after a short term. To stop such growth, respectively to avoid germination and to prevent damaging effects of humidity to construction components, these floating floor screeds are usually dried technically. This research reveals that – for the most common material assemblies‐ technical drying of floating floor screeds is not complete proven achievable. A microbial escalation during technical drying is unavoidable. By fitting a ventilation layer between concrete floor and insulation layer, complete drying of the insulation layer was produced. A microbial escalation hasn't been monitored in this case
