Diese Phase wird oft retrospektiv als ...eine der zentralen Episoden für das gute Verhältnis zwischen Deutschen und Griechen in der Zeitgeschichte betrachtet: Durch die Unterstützung in der Bundesrepublik konnte sich eine griechische demokratische Opposition auf westdeutschem Boden mit eigenen Presseorganen etablieren, während die Bundesregierung sich oft für die Freilassung von in Griechenland inhaftierten Widerstandsaktivisten einsetzte. Wenn man die Facetten der bilateralen Beziehungen während der Militärdiktatur genauer untersucht, fällt trotzdem schnell auf, dass die westdeutsche Außenpolitik wesentlich ambivalenter gestaltet war, als ein bloßer Blick auf die Unterstützung der griechischen Opposition erscheinen lässt - dabei waren realpolitische und strategische Ziele der westdeutschen Außenpolitik von zentraler Bedeutung.

Eine davon ist die Arbeit der Denkmalpflegerin Birgit Knauer (2022), die sich mit der „Assanierung“ der Stadt Wien im Austrofaschismus auseinandersetzt. Die Werke zeigen, wie Städtebau durch diktatorische Regime benutzt wurde, um Repression auszuüben oder Konsens herzustellen, und als wirtschaftspolitisches Programm der beschleunigten industriellen Entwicklung sowie zur volkswirtschaftlichen Erholung in und nach Krisenzeiten diente. Dabei spielen Propaganda, Geschichtsbilder, Zukunftsverheißungen und nicht zuletzt europäische Netzwerke eine Rolle.
In the context of comparative legal history, the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission is contrasted with the Study Commission for Working Through the History and the Consequences of the ...SED Dictatorship in Germany. In an extensive examination, central aspects of the commissions' mandates and their implementation are analyzed, thus providing a deeper understanding of the two truth commissions. Whilst the final reports of the commissions serve as a central source, personal interviews with experts in transitional justice and contemporary witnesses from South Africa are also included in the work.

This book updates and refines the theory of ...consociationalism, taking account of the flood of contemporary innovations in power-sharing institutions that have occurred worldwide. The book classifies and compares four types of political institutions: the electoral system, parliamentary or presidential executives, unitary or federal states, and the structure and independence of the mass media. The study tests the potential advantages and disadvantages of each of these institutions for democratic governance. Cross-national time-series data concerning trends in democracy are analyzed for all countries worldwide since the early 1970s. Chapters are enriched by comparing detailed case studies. The mixed-method research design illuminates the underlying causal mechanisms by examining historical developments and processes of institutional change within particular nations and regions.
