In Exercising Authority and Representing Rule, András Barati offers the transcription, translation, and commentary of twenty-two hitherto unpublished Persian decrees issued by various rulers of ...eighteenth-century Iran and Afghanistan and addresses the diplomatic aspects and the content of the documents.
A document containing unique information about the seals on medieval acts that were stored in the early 18th century in the archives of the “Moscow” (i. e. Kremlin) monasteries is examined and ...published in the article. It has been established that this description was compiled by the Monastyrskii Prikaz in 1709 in response to the request of Tsar Peter I and was attached to the letter of I. A. Musin-Pushkin, the Prikaz’s Head. The document was not found and was considered lost, when the Letters and Papers of Emperor Peter the Great were published in 1709. The description contains information about official seals from the archives of two of the four Kremlin monasteries that existed that time — Chudov and Afanasievsky (the courtyard of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery). Four seals were discovered, described and drawn in the Chudov archive, and one in the Afanasevsky archive. The author considers the description as the origins of scientific sphragistics, since the compilation of this document is clearly out of the scope of practical tasks (identification of the act in the monastic archive and indication of its proper certification).
Late antique and early medieval documents often feature graphic symbols – graphic entities that may be composed of alphabetic or non-alphabetic signs – that communicate something different or ...something more than the written text. The NOTAE research project is concerned with the identification and classification of such graphic symbols, while also attempting to investigate the meaning they convey or take on in a definite context. This report illustrates the structure and operational functions of the open-access database, the main product of the project, in which graphic symbols, at the present more than six thousand, result catalogued, described and classified by type.
A significant contribution to the study of cross-cultural communication--and accommodation--in the ethnically, religiously and linguistically diverse world of the medieval Eastern Mediterranean as ...reflected in Byzantine, Latin and Islamic archival sources and chancery traditions.
Legal formularies provide modern historians with information on many aspects of ordinary life in early medieval Europe, from labour and land agreements to cases which we would nowadays associate with ...criminal law. This book provides a detailed analysis of formularies, setting out their problems and possibilities as historical sources.
This paper seeks to develop a digital diplomatic approach for reducing medieval charters’ documentary formulae into text reuse templates that represent their variational subtypes. The paper also ...tests this approach by visualizing the variation of two, partly mutually competing, formulae. The research data consists of 1,024 constat and manifestus clauses extracted from Latin charters written in Tuscany in the eighth to tenth centuries. Charters largely consist of formulae, which are prefabricated semi-fixed expressions of juridical content and recur in varying forms in charters of the same type. The complex interplay of documentary text reuse elements in time and place can be used to investigate historical drifts of documentary production and underlying administrative and cultural changes. The computer-assisted text reuse approach proposed is expected to be applicable to large datasets and scalable to other historical contexts.

Textual and paratextual elements that serve to establish the authenticity of documents abound and carry meaning that is important—often central—to the meaning of the document as received, but are ...currently only lightly modeled in TEI. This paper will discuss issues in the modeling of authenticating features across time periods and regional boundaries, from the existing element to medieval European chirographs to Japanese jitsu-in. Here, I will make the case for the applicability of authenticating elements, introduce a preliminary working vocabulary of methods of authenticating elements, and demonstrate how they can be modeled in TEI.
