In the post Ph.D. thesis period, Simon, the only participant in this study was encouraged to reflect on his learning process by his supervisor through interviews. Simon had already reflected on the ...practice of colleagues during the thesis process; however, this follow-up study brought out the researcher's own voice. Taking a view of identity that emphasizes the interaction between the personal and the professional, the study reveals that Simon was able to understand how reflection on a wide range of incidents and memories, and the classification and thematising of these, led to insights into his own identity growth. The analysis of his own interview data led to reflection on the connections between different aspects of identity. As the analysis progressed, self-confidence and self-realisation emerged as personal themes, and changed teaching content, and changed relationships with students, as professional themes. The learning in the thesis became subject to greater scrutiny, or meta-reflection, and he was able to compare himself with thesis participants, and insights into his changed identity in relation to them. The links emerging involved his roles as writer, researcher, learner and teacher. Some implications for thesis supervision are provided.
The thesis by publication (TBP) - a collection of standalone articles aimed at publication and accompanied by an explanatory narrative - has grown in popularity over the last two decades. Although ...research on the TBP is beginning to emerge, it is thus far fragmented. We carried out a scoping review of the literature on the TBP for the years 2000-2020 to assess the current state of knowledge about the TBP and emerging knowledge needs. We identified 65 studies that met our criteria and analyzed what kind of research is emerging (as well as where it is emerging from), what topics are covered, and what recommendations are called for. Our analysis shows that the literature has been dominated by studies focusing on individual TBP experiences and on solving practical challenges surrounding the TBP. We argue that important next steps in research on the TBP will be to move from micro-level analysis of individual experiences to more conceptual studies that seek to analyze the TBP from a meso or macro level - exploring the links between thesis format, doctoral education, and the production of knowledge in a longitudinal perspective.
Abstract The doctorate forms the basis for academic careers and the regeneration of academia, and has increasingly become important for other sectors of society. The latter is reflected in efforts on ...institutional, national as well as supranational levels to change and adapt the doctoral degree to new expectations. As doctoral education is embedded in research, changes in governance and funding of research further affect the doctorate. The evaluation of the doctoral thesis appears, however, to have remained true to the academic tradition: an examination committee exercising their gatekeeping in a ceremonial setting. This study sets out to explore doctoral examination committees’ evaluation practices. Insights were gained through six focus group interviews with experienced examination committee members at three large research-intensive universities in Sweden. Of particular interest is how the object of evaluation is formed, the nature of the boundary-work conducted, and variations in examination practices related to different and changing conditions for research and doctoral education. Our results show how the object of evaluation emerges through a gradual interpretation of the thesis and defence, becoming more complex and nuanced as the process of evaluation progresses from its initial stages to the final closed discussions of the committee. The finalised object of evaluation, only fully present at the conclusion of the closed meeting and hence transient in nature, encompasses the research contribution, educational achievement, and academic competence of the candidate. Furthermore, the boundary-work conducted in this process often transcends the object of evaluation to include also supervision and the local context for doctoral education and research, and hence contributes to upholding, and potential changing, norms in research fields, educational contexts, and academia at large. This extended boundary-work intensified as problems and inconsistencies were discovered during the evaluation process. The ceremonial staging underscored the gravity of the decision and the extended boundary-work. Despite changing conditions for the doctorate, our findings highlight the importance of the practice of evaluation committees, and the disciplinary communities to which they belong, for upholding and negotiating norms in academia.

Our paper was written to gather information on the adoption by UK universities of doctorates by published papers in the Social Sciences and Humanities, and to explore the challenges thrown up by the ...introduction of such a new format for these disciplines. We are aware that this format is widely in use in the physical/life/medical sciences and in a number of countries abroad.
This article sets up a collaborative narrative of three elements from the Group Study on Participatory and Artistic Processes in Research and Education (GEPPAIE), composed of researchers in academic ...and professional development (professors, doctoral and master's students in Education areas). It begins with a question: how have we experienced, as a higher education study group, our meeting spaces for the production of emancipatory knowledge about research, especially about arts-based research? This question unfolds into others and drives us to what has already been produced collectively, but also boosts the new writings and reflections in this text. It is also part of Ana Serra Rocha's PhD, focused on the problematization of The book’s experience as a place of epistemological reflection in artistic education, aiming at a broader reflection in the field of artistic education and in doctoral studies. It speculates on the participatory processes of collaborative creation and on some issues that have been debated at GEPPAIE, namely of a relational and methodological nature, with a view to (des/re)construction of knowledge and its forms of written and visual representation.
Not only the amount of research related contents in German medical studies are objects of criticism, but also the medical doctoral thesis. However, the question which research competences are truly ...acquired within medical school and the doctoral phase is empirically open, and is thus pursued in the following research study.
We used data from the Bavarian Medical Graduate Panel Survey (MediBAP) (N=455), where respondents assessed their own research competences. To consolidate the data, we analysed qualitative interviews with doctoral medical graduates and students from the E-Prom study (N=14).
The quantitative analyses show that medical graduates evaluate the medical curriculum's research contents and their acquired competences as rather low. Doctoral graduates rate their competence of pursuing research independently higher than medical graduates who have not finished their doctorate. The qualitative analyses are in line with these results, as they point to the predominant development of competences during the doctoral phase. Despite this clearly positive trend, the majority of the respondents don't feel confident enough to undertake research independently also after attaining their doctoral degree.
The results of this study emphasize the need for a more systematic and targeted mediation and review of research competences within the regular medical curriculum.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the trends in doctoral dissertations prepared using quantitative research methods in the field of Turkish education between 2010-2020. While examining the doctoral dissertations in the study, a framework was drawn in terms of scientific research methods. Survey model was used in the study. The theses examined within the scope of the research were reached through the Higher Education Council National Thesis Center. In this context, 323 theses were reached and 78 of them were found to be prepared by quantitative research methods. Content analysis was carried out by evaluating these theses with the help of the thesis classification form. As a result of the study, it was observed that in theses prepared with quantitative research methods, language skills centered subjects were emphasized and the rate of theses produced with experimental designs was higher. It has been determined that studies conducted on secondary school students are in the majority. In theses, mostly data analysis has been done with parametric tests. Research can be done on postgraduate theses within the framework of different research methods.
