In spite of tremendous impact on health, elder abuse is still an underreported and unrecognized issue.

In general, elderly abuse is an act that endangers health and wellness of elderly person, is not accepted by the cultural values of society and harms elderly person. At present, the possibility of elderly abuse increases especially in elderly people who cannot use their social, economic, political and cultural opportunities and also due to the increasing elderly population with the increasing life expectancy and inadequacy of social security and support systems. There are six types of elderly abuse including psychical, psychological, economical, emotional, sexual, caregiver neglect and elderly people's own neglect of themselves. There are some risk factors for both elderly person and caregiver in elderly abuse and neglect. These risk factors separate in three categories as individual features, social and related factors and economic factors. Since 1970, the number of screening tools used to determine the cases of elderly abuse has been increased. However, a few of them are suitable for inpatient elderly individuals. And most of them are limited to testing acute care and in-house care. Elderly people do not say that they are abused or neglected because of the fear of re-exposure to violence, breaking family ties, being separated from the family and sent to a social institution and legal procedures. For this reason, the most effective precaution for abuse and neglect is to raise awareness of healthcare workers, elderly people and society.

In recent years, along with the increasing proportion of the elderly population, psychologists in different roles, such as researchers, therapists, educators, as well as many different professions, ...will work more with elderly people. For this reason, psychologists who have to comply with the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct published by the American Psychologi-cal Association (APA) in any psychological practice they conduct (research, therapy, etc.) will need to increase their awareness of ethical issues specific to elderly individuals. Considering serious changes and losses in the cognitive, psychological, and physical characteristics, different ethical issues may need to be paid particular attention to elderly people. In this review, based on the characteristics of elderly individuals, the ethical issues that need to be considered in psycho-logical practice were addressed under the headings of informed consent, volunteerism, privacy, confidentiality, autonomy, abuse and neglect and appropriate solutions for each issue were dis-cussed on the basis of ethical principles. Psychologists and other mental health professionals need to develop their competence to work with elderly individuals by obtaining detailed knowledge of the characteristics of them and professional ethical principles for this group in order to solve the related ethical problems properly.
One purpose of this study was to examine how the relationship between caregivers and the elderly care receivers is associated with the position of caregivers and the direction of their eyes toward ...the elderly. The other purpose was to assess the usability of the inter-personal distance evaluation form. We examined 53 primary caregivers, which were classified into two groups: 27 of them who abused the elderly, and 26 who didn't. We also adopted the inter-personal distance evaluation form which projects psychological distance of caregivers toward the elderly who receive their care. The result shows that in the situations set on the evaluation form, “caregiver stickers” were mostly affixed to the side or diagonally behind the elderly. However more than half of the abusive caregivers were situated outside the room or directly behind the elderly when they wandered or needed help with eating. Such positions are observed when caregivers disassociate themselves from the elderly. As for the direction of their eyes, caregivers mostly watched the elderly in front or within their views, yet in the case of the abusive caregivers, they cast their eyes to irrelevant directions when the elderly were wandering (77.7%) or being rebellious (70.3%). These results imply that the inter-personal distance evaluation form which describes the position of caregivers and the direction of their eyes reflects the relationship between caregivers and the elderly care receivers.
Since the late 1970s when Congressman Claude Pepper held widely publicized hearings on the mistreatment of the elderly, policy makers and practitioners have sought ways to protect older Americans ...from physical, psychological, and financial abuse. Yet, during the last 20 years fewer than 50 articles have addressed the shameful problem that abusers?and sometimes the abused themselves?want to conceal.
Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America takes a giant step toward broadening our understanding of the mistreatment of the elderly and recommends specific research and funding strategies that can be used to deepen it. The book includes a discussion of the conceptual, methodological, and logistical issues needed to create a solid research base as well as the ethical concerns that must be considered when working with older subjects. It also looks at problems in determination of a report's reliability and the role of physicians, EMTs, and others who are among the first to recognize situations of mistreatment.
Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America will be of interest to anyone concerned about the elderly and ways to intervene when abuse is suspected, including family members, caregivers, and advocates for the elderly. It will also be of interest to researchers, research sponsors, and policy makers who need to know how to advance our knowledge of this problem.
The purpose of this study was to construct a conceptual framework of elderly abuse that can sort levels of abusive behavior and clarify the concept of abuse. Components of abuse were added to the ...International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model and the applicability of the framework was examined through case analysis. As a result, three levels of elderly abuse were confirmed, “elderly abuse”, “quasi-abuse” and “inappropriate care”, by applying the combination of each component of the conceptual framework of abuse. Conceptual differences about the three levels were also identified. To prevent elderly abuse and to support life with dignity for the elderly, the following items should be satisfied: (1) understanding the levels and characteristics of abusive behavior;and (2) providing support in accordance with each type of abusive behavior.
