With numerous examples to supplement her rich theoretical discussion, Nel Noddings builds a compelling philosophical argument for an ethics based on natural caring, as in the care of a mother for her ...child. In Caring—now updated with a new preface and afterword reflecting on the ongoing relevance of the subject matter—the author provides a wide-ranging consideration of whether organizations, which operate at a remove from the caring relationship, can truly be called ethical. She discusses the extent to which we may truly care for plants, animals, or ideas. Finally, she proposes a realignment of education to encourage and reward not just rationality and trained intelligence, but also enhanced sensitivity in moral matters.
Organ transplantation is an essential element of treatment for a wide range of diseases, but despite increasing surgical success rates there remain many other issues affecting selection of patients ...and clinical outcome with which clinicians and patients themselves must be familiar. Originally published in 2000, this book reviews psychosocial, psychiatric and ethical aspects of organ transplantation in a uniquely authoritative way. Drawing heavily on the pioneering work of the Pittsburgh transplant team, it surveys the essentials of transplantation biology before engaging with a range of topics fundamental to the success of the procedure and the quality of life of recipients and donors alike. The interdisciplinary approach and the authority of the contributors will make this book of value to anyone with an interest in organ transplantation procedures.
This paper tries to provide an introduction into advertising ethics, and examines the problems with its definition, as well as different concepts of the area. The observed differences in the ...perception
of the discipline are grouped into three categories: (1) the issue of theoretical or applied nature of advertising ethics, (2) its separation or inclusion into marketing ethics, (3) original theoretical contributions to general ethics as the only reason for the existence of advertising ethics. We paid special attention to the objection with respect to the incoherence of the discipline due to alleged inherent immorality of advertising as a profession. Further, the paper examines the relationship between advertising ethics and other related disciplines – media ethics, area of business and society, as well as marketing and business ethics. Through critical reflection, we have attempted to answer all the questions we have encountered, as well as provide interested researchers with an insight into an emerging ethical discipline – advertising ethics.
The strange and harrowing sight of a person being awake but unaware with no evidence of a working mind - the characteristics of the vegetative state - provokes intense debate and raises profound ...questions for health professionals, ethicists, philosophers and lawyers. This unique account by an unrivalled expert in the field, who himself collaborated in coining the term 'persistent vegetative state', surveys the medical, ethical and legal issues that surround this controversial topic. The medical definition and criteria for diagnosis are discussed, as are its frequency and causes, and possible outcomes. Ethical arguments discussed include the conflict between sanctity of life and respect for the autonomy and best interests of the victim, and between killing and letting die. Legal issues are explored with details of landmark court cases from the USA, Britain and elsewhere. This well-informed and carefully constructed account will be a benchmark for medical specialists, ethicists, lawyers and philosophers.
