Under andra världskriget omkom tusentals svenska sjöman vid handelsflottan som en följd av torpederingar och mineringar till havs, eller gick bort utomlands och vars kvarlevor inte kunde sändas ...tillbaka till Sverige. I dessa fall fick sjömannen jordfästas bortom svensk jord, och de hemmavarande anhöriga kunde inte resa till begravningsceremonin för att deltaga i riten. Med utgångspunkt i narrativ analys diskuteras i denna artikel de beskrivningar av svenskars sjömansbegravningar som publicerades i tidskriften Ute och Hemmas dödsnotiser under perioden 1940-45. I notiserna framgår att kransar, språk, och den svenska jorden tillskrevs mening, och därutöver spelade närvaron en särskild roll i begravningsriten. Besättningar från andra båtar deltog i sjömanskollegors begravningar och utgjorde dels ett substitut för den avlidne sjömannens familj i Sverige, dels en representant för sjömansgemenskapen. I artikeln argumenteras att dödsnotisens text möjliggjorde ett upplevande av ceremonin för den hemmavarande familjen under krigsårens oberäknelighet.
The turn in migration studies to broaden its scope beyond migrants themselves to also include prospective migrants – and even the society they live in – opens for a better understanding of migration. ...Despite mobile students from the Global South being a key feature of the globalisation of higher education, their voices are underrepresented and undertheorized in migration literature. Student narratives from the Global South can therefore offer new and valuable perspectives. This study contextualizes students’ migration aspirations within a critical view of migration studies and global knowledge production and methodologically centres the students and their narratives. Students at two universities in Ghana were interviewed in focus groups about migration. Findings reveal diversity and contradictions: students speak about migration in simple and even ambiguous terminology suggesting a quotidian quality of the conversation, and the undeniably uncertain and ambiguous future. Students also harbour distinct views on migration connected to class and identity, including various reservations or even counter-narratives to migration such as concerns about racism and discrimination abroad, and the draw of family and culture at home. Additionally, the students in this study, similar to well-researched student migration narratives in the Global North, connect mobility to cultural exposure, enjoyment, and adventure.

What do tests performed on human bodies tell us? Hormones and genetics have become increasingly central to contemporary understandings of identities and kinship. In this article, narratives around ...hormone and genetic testing are examined through two examples: the use of DNA testing in migration control and hormone testing in sports. In the name of "fair sport" and "fair migration", people are being tested because of regulations by the federation or by the state. Testing is said to produce better knowledge, where knowledge without testing is unreliable and defined as a problem which constitutes a risk to fair participation or belonging. In the narratives examined in this article, there is a simultaneous stabilization and destabilization of identity, gender and race. We argue for a slightly different articulation of molecularization, compared to how it has previously been conceptualized in canonized scholarly work. When considered as strategic and entangled with gender, race, and sexuality, molecularization appears as not only a development within or from biopolitics but also as a part of necropolitics. The relation between politics and molecularization is here centred on control by knowing the individual through biological tests, a form of control which we call testinaming.
Is complex, ambiguous, and fluctuating social reality measurable? Sometimes yes, perhaps, but often not. At least not in the fairly straightforward way assumed by many researchers. This study is an ...ethnographic inquiry into data collection during a survey research project. Based on our observations of participants’ spontaneous thoughts and confusions as they filled in questionnaires on “leadership” and “teamwork”, we draw attention to hidden problems in much organizational research. Many respondents found measures ambiguous, irrelevant, or misleading. We (a) underline the inherently interpretative nature of research into complex organizational phenomena, (b) warn against lack of reflexivity and overreliance on existing survey instruments when we study complex social aspects of organizations, (c) identify five categories of possible problems, and (d) suggest paths towards better informed research that take context seriously.
In this collection leading anthropologists provide a comprehensive yet highly nuanced view of what it means to be a Greek man or woman, married or unmarried, functioning within a complex society ...based on kinship ties. Exploring the ways in which sexual identity is constructed, these authors discuss, for example, how going out for coffee embodies dominant ideas about female sexuality, moral virtue, and autonomy; why men in a Lesbos village maintain elaborate friendships with nonfamily members while the women do not; why young housewives often participate in conflict-resolution rituals; and how the dominant role of mature married householders is challenged by unmarried persons who emphasize spontaneity and personal autonomy. This collection demonstrates that kinship and gender identities in Greece are not unitary and fixed: kinship is organized in several highly specific forms, and gender identities are plural, competing, antagonistic, and are continually being redefined by contexts and social change.

Artikelns syfte är att studera mellanmänskliga relationer i sanatoriemiljö såsom de uttrycks i personliga minnesbilder och med en viss sidobelysning från skönlitteraturen. Frågor som diskuteras är ...hur de relationer som utkristalliserades inom och mellan olika grupper på sanatoriet beskrivs, liksom i vad mån man kan utläsa något om betydelsen av position, klass och genus. Vidare diskuteras vilka strategier som användes av patienter och personal för att uppnå olika typer av mål. Huvudmaterialet består av en manlig patients anteckningar från Bollnäs sanatorium respektive Kolmårdssanatoriet utanför Norrköping samt en kvinnlig patients skildring från Orups sanatorium i Skåne. Kompletterande källor utgörs bland annat av en kortare samtalsintervju med en läkare. Den period som behandlas är tiden under och strax efter andra världskriget. Resultatet visar att sanatoriet var ett mikrosamhälle som på flera sätt speglade det omgivande storsamhället. Maktrelationer och hierarkier utkristalliserades både bland personal och i viss mån patienter, vänskap, kärlek och antagonism likaså.
