This paper proposes a connection admission control (CAC) algorithm for the reverse-link transmission of a packetized indoor multimedia wireless communication network using a direct sequence code ...division multiple access (DS-CDMA) protocol. The traffic types include voice, data, facsimile and low-rate video. The CAC algorithm maximizes the utilization of the system resources (i.e., the reverse-link frequency spectrum and the output buffers at the base stations) and, at the same time, guarantees quality of service (QoS) to each of the network users. It checks if there are enough resources for a new connection request by comparing the measured signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) to a calculated SINR threshold. If the measured SINR is higher than the corresponding SINR threshold for all mobile terminals (including the requesting mobile) in the microcell, then the requesting mobile terminal can be admitted into the system. The performance of the algorithm is verified by using the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) to model the traffic sources.
A discussion is presented of the design issues in implementing a document retrieval system on a token-ring network. The presence of real-time traffic, namely, voice, on the same network makes the ...implementation complicated. The performance requirements of these traffic types are different. Voice creates stream traffic on a network, whereas data traffic is bursty. Voice packets need to be delivered within a limited time interval, whereas the data need emphasizes error-free delivery. A possible solution, using off-the-shelf components and supported by a simulation study, is discussed.< >

The impulse for this article was the current publication 'Book supports of open books in exhibitions. A guide for conservators and exhibition designers' (Buchstützen für geöffnete Bücher in ...Ausstellungen. Ein Leitfaden für Restauratoren und Ausstellungsgestalter) (Brückle, 2019). This two-part article focuses on the special challenges of permanent-as opposed to temporary-exhibitions with their inherent preservation challenges and limited options for conservators within the overall decision-making process. The multi-perspective approach offers solutions contributed from two different professionals, i.e., conservators and exhibition designers. Part 1 presents a practical compromise developed by book conservators for protecting of books in permanent exhibition at the German Historical Museum Foundation Berlin (Stiftung Deutsches Historisches Museum - DHM) from light-damage. Here, the book conservators have developed the 'facsimile view page' as a combination of original book and overlying facsimile. Part 2, for a bigger picture, looks at a range of exhibition designs and presentation forms. Most importantly, by allowing a reduction in the number of items displayed, not only does exhibition design comply with the stated preservation goals, but it is also closely connected with the conservator's work.
