Researchers recently pointed to family science as one avenue for better understanding business families. We submit, however, that leveraging family science will require building on what researchers ...have already learned, often without the benefit of family science theories. Thus, we review progress from studies that investigate links between business family attributes and family firms and integrate our review with descriptions of family science theories that pertain to each attribute. By pairing what is known about different business family attributes with the appropriate family science theories, our hope is to accelerate efforts to understand the myriad ways business families shape family businesses.
Among the most vulnerable groups in society is the elderly, who face issues such as a deteriorating feeling of self-worth brought on by physical weakness, a dwindling social position, and limited ...financial resources. Feelings of insignificance have been exacerbated by the fact that families are finding it more difficult to care for the elderly due to socioeconomic and demographic changes. As a result, psychological difficulties frequently outweigh outward indications of aging as people age. With a specific focus on 260 senior individuals in Punjab between the ages of 60 and 90, this study sought to investigate the effects of family and social attitudes toward the old. The majority of respondents claimed financial independence, but only 11% reported having stable finances due to rental income and savings account interest. But 8% struggled to pay for everyday needs, and some experienced severe financial difficulties related to fundamental needs and family responsibilities. Remarkably, only 11.7% of older people consistently created strong social relationships, compared to 76.6% who did so on occasion. Furthermore, 16.7% of respondents admitted to their situation, suggesting a greater dedication to maintaining family togetherness. The behavioral changes aligned with the perceptions of 83% of senior respondents who observed a shift in the way older persons view their basic obligations. Family dynamics, economic dependence, physical abuse cases, feelings of isolation, inadequate social support, family members' disdain, and food-related issues were among the main concerns. The study emphasized the complex relationships that exist between aging, health problems, decreased physical activity, and elder abuse. It also clarified the critical roles that qualities, social interactions, financial dependence, and behaviors have in influencing these relationships.
Abstract Objective Through qualitative in‐depth interviews with interracial parents across the United States, this study explores how multiracial families as a unit experience monoracism via racial ...surveillance, voyeurism, and dissection. Background Despite increasing representations of mixed‐race families in various media, studies find that many people in the United States assume that family members should phenotypically resemble each other and also represent one obvious racial category. Interracial partners and multiracial families experience the paradox of being both the “ideal” family in a post‐racial US society, but also an anomalous family that challenges assumptions about what family is. This study examines two broad research questions: (1) How do interracial parents and their multiracial families experience racism and/or other forms of discrimination? (2) How do families make sense of and respond to these experiences? Method This study utilized qualitative in‐depth interviews with 19 sets of interracial parents, or 38 individuals, in the US Black‐White, Asian‐White, and Black‐Asian families are included in the sample. Results Interracial parents in this study discussed experiencing racial dissection, surveillance, and voyeurism in their daily lives, which the author identified as mechanisms of monoracism. Monoracism, typically studied as an experience of multiracial people, is a form of oppression that targets those who do not fit into one racial category. However, monoracism also impacts multiracial family units. As a result, multiracial families were often prepared to prove their familial bonds, such as through birth certificates, or altered their behavior in public as a means of “performing” family in more obvious ways. Conclusion Through a MultiCrit lens, this study reveals how interracial parents and their children experience monoracism. This study extends previous scholarship by exploring how multiracial families as a unit experience and navigate monoracism in their daily lives.
Objective: This study aim to analyse the legal implications of increase in the divorce rate as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic at the Tanjungkarang Religious Court in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. ...Additionally, the study seeks to identify the underlying factors that contributed to the occurrence of divorce at the Tanjungkarang Religious Court during the pandemic. Theoretical framework: Literature in this study was based on the phenomena that several regions in Indonesia have experienced an increase in the divorce rate as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic; the Tanjungkarang Religious Court in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, is one example. From January to June 2020, the Tanjungkarang Religious Court in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, documented 699 divorces amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: This study employs a qualitative methodology and conducts field research. In the interim, both primary and secondary data, acquired through field observation, documentation, and direct interviews, are included in the collected information. In order to facilitate the process of verifying the data, the researcher employed the triangulation method to ascertain its validity. Results and Conclusion: this study found that During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tanjungkarang Bandar Lampung-Indonesia Religious Court witnessed a surge in divorce petitions. June brings the highest volume of divorce cases. Divorce filings experienced a surge during the months of April, May, and June, as well as throughout the shutdown period. Second, divorce cases during the Covid-19 pandemic were precipitated by a variety of factors, with economic factors ranking highest. According to report data from the Tanjungkarang Religious Court, the factors of physical disability, imprisonment sentence, and coerced marriage account for the smallest number of divorce cases. Implications of the research: In order to promote resilience and well-being among families amidst the uncertainties of the current pandemic, it is possible for policymakers, legal practitioners, and community stakeholders to acknowledge the difficulties presented by the disease and devise focused interventions to assist individuals navigating the process of marital dissolution. Originality/value: Studying how COVID-19 has affected divorce rates in particular areas, such as Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, could shed light on the ways in which the pandemic has impacted socioeconomic variables, legal frameworks, and family dynamics there. Policymakers, attorneys, and social service providers can be more informed about the difficulties that families may encounter in times of crisis by having a better understanding of these effects. This knowledge can also help to shape the creation of support networks and laws that deal with these problems. Such studies can also add to the body of knowledge in academia regarding how significant crises affect legal systems and family structures.
Abstract Objective In this article, I propose a new approach to study the opportunities and challenges for low‐income families through a focus on two key dimensions of family life: time and space. I ...show how the interaction of these two dimensions produces a range of scenarios for different types of social support to emerge. Background The space–time continuum (STC) is a theoretical framework in physics that removes the distinction between time and space and, instead, treats them as part of a seamless continuum. Similar to its adaptation in psychology, I use it to develop a model of family dynamics to better understand the correlates of kinship support. Method Drawing on data drawn from a longitudinal project in Nairobi, Kenya, the spatial dimension is operationalized as the proportion of kin who live in close proximity and the temporal pertains to the duration of time in which family members maintain particular arrangements. Multinomial logit regression models are used to analyze the relationship between STC exposure and the odds of having each type of support composition. Results The receipt of specific types of support from kin does vary across the STC quadrants though not entirely consistent with expectations. Moreover, the role of non‐kin was found to be surprisingly low across all waves of data collection, underscoring the continued importance of kin‐based relationships. Conclusion The space–time continuum approach offers a way to connect macro level factors such as labor market constraints to micro level adaptation, agency, change and continuity in family structure and function. In doing so, I also make a case for the critical role that research in the African context can play in the development of theory and methodological innovation in family sociology.
This review examines mechanisms contributing to the intergenerational transmission of self-regulation. To provide an integrated account of how self-regulation is transmitted across generations, we ...draw from over 75 years of accumulated evidence, spanning case studies to experimental approaches, in literatures covering developmental, social, and clinical psychology, and criminology, physiology, genetics, and human and animal neuroscience (among others). First, we present a taxonomy of what self-regulation is and then examine how it develops-overviews that guide the main foci of the review. Next, studies supporting an association between parent and child self-regulation are reviewed. Subsequently, literature that considers potential social mechanisms of transmission, specifically parenting behavior, interparental (i.e., marital) relationship behaviors, and broader rearing influences (e.g., household chaos) is considered. Finally, evidence that prenatal programming may be the starting point of the intergenerational transmission of self-regulation is covered, along with key findings from the behavioral and molecular genetics literatures. To integrate these literatures, we introduce the self-regulation intergenerational transmission model, a framework that brings together prenatal, social/contextual, and neurobiological mechanisms (spanning endocrine, neural, and genetic levels, including gene-environment interplay and epigenetic processes) to explain the intergenerational transmission of self-regulation. This model also incorporates potential transactional processes between generations (e.g., children's self-regulation and parent-child interaction dynamics that may affect parents' self-regulation) that further influence intergenerational processes. In pointing the way forward, we note key future directions and ways to address limitations in existing work throughout the review and in closing. We also conclude by noting several implications for intervention work.
