Summary
Using the example of the fin‐de‐siècle German Reich, this article outlines how insomnia emerged as a “disease of civilisation” in an industrialising society, defined by time‐specific notions, ...reflecting and strengthening the social norms of the time. Furthermore, it analyses the process of individualisation and flexibilisation that transferred the social struggles and economic demands of modernity onto the subject's body or soul. The history of insomnia around 1900 thus reveals a pattern of thought that shaped the understanding of the insomniac throughout the 20th century.
Les auteurs et artistes des dernières décennies du XIXe siècle montrent une évidente obsession eschatologique, qu’elle concerne le déclin de la nation, de la civilisation, ou de l’humanité tout ...entière. Cette inquiétude se décline en une poétique et une esthétique de la finitude que la « décadence » désigne comme un mot-totem. Pourtant, cette fin-de-siècle, qui se croit à la fin de tout, puise dans les nouveaux savoir portés sur les origines (préhistoire, évolutionnisme) les ferments de ses visions apocalyptiques. Il s’agira, dans cette étude, de comprendre l’implication des connaissances sur les débuts des temps dans l’imaginaire de la fin des temps. Car, dès lors que cette culture se positionne sur l’échelle de l’espèce qu’invitent à penser ces nouveaux savoirs, il semblerait que mourir, ce n’est pas tant « partir beaucoup », pour reprendre le trait plaisant d’Alphonse Allais, c’est peut-être et avant tout revenir.
Rachilde, nacida Marguerite Eymery (1860-1953), conoció su primer éxito literario con Monsieur Vénus (1884). Sin embargo, cuando sólo tenía doce años, las primeras formas literarias con las que se ...inició en literatura fueron el relato corto en prosa y el cuento. Estos textos inéditos, extraídos de su Cahier de Style, aún no han sido objeto de estudio. Así pues, nos proponemos, en este artículo, sacarlos a la luz demostrando que, a esa edad, la escritora en ciernes poseía ya dones literarios que la llevaron a transgredir las convenciones tradicionales de estas diferentes formas literarias a través de una escritura híbrida que viene a contaminar y romper los límites de los géneros. Más tarde, con diecisiete años, se lanzó a publicar sus cuentos y novelas cortas en la prensa local y parisina, así como a iniciarse profesionalmente como crítica literaria y de arte con unas reseñas que muestran ya un estilo único y subversivo. Estos primeros textos publicados en la prensa tampoco han sido aún objeto de estudio.
Rachilde, née Marie-Marguerite Eymery (1860-1953), est surtout connue pour ses œuvres littéraires, et plus particulièrement pour ses romans jugés « sulfureux ». Avec Monsieur Vénus (1883), œuvre qui fit couler beaucoup d’encre de la part de la critique, Rachilde fixa son entrée officielle dans le monde des Lettres de la Belle Époque. Or, les premières formes littéraires par lesquelles elle s’initia en littérature furent les récits brefs en prose : le conte, la nouvelle, ainsi que d’autres genres de textes brefs, comme l’article et le compte rendu littéraire et d’art.
Ces textes brefs, pratiqués dès sa prime jeunesse, furent accueilli par la presse de la fin-de-siècle, espace médiatique de masse qui lui a permis de perfectionner les différentes poétiques, ainsi que de jouer avec elles par le biais d’une expérimentation rhétorique et discursive toujours mises à l’épreuve en cette période de crise littéraire.
Les ambitions littéraires de Rachilde la poussèrent à transgresser les conventions traditionnelles de ces différentes formes littéraires et textuelles par une écriture hybride venant contaminer et briser les limites des genres, comme c’est le cas, par exemple, des nouvelles dont l’auteure usurpe au genre dramatique certains procédés discursifs ou encore les comptes rendus critiques auxquels elle donne des effets subversifs par l’emprunt d’artifices issus de la narration ou du lyrisme.
Parce que la recherche ne s’est pas encore penchée sur ces textes de jeunesse, nous désirons, par le biais de notre communication, mettre en lumière les jeux de transgressions que Rachilde opéra dans ces différents genres littéraires parce qu’elle avait compris que si les temps changeaient, l’écriture devait, elle, également se rénover.
This paper addresses the fin-de-siècle period as a time when most of what are called intermedial processes, that is to say, those processes that arbitrate aesthetic design at the intersection between ...different media, began to play a substantial role in the production of cultural artifacts. The epoch is investigated through the prism of intermediality, which manifested itself as a valuable tool in the development of the arts and media, particularly after the birth of photography and cinematography. These intermedial processes fostered a media-based creative experimentation that culminated in the modernist and postmodernist movements. The role of intermediality in the fin-de-siècle, particularly in light of the syncretic processes it originated, is considered as an aftereffect of the tumultuous events of the time, which in a way acted as a stimulus for this new-fangled aesthetics. The paper concludes that the turbulence that characterizes this epoch, as well as the diffusion of new artistic and philosophical movements, impacted the development of mixed (intermedial) arts, stimulated their growth and activated the exploration of intermedial forms and genres in all the arts. This is the era of mass publishing and the growth of literacy rates, an era that laid the foundations for future theories on intertextuality and the idea of the work of art as an inclusive “canvas” inside of which all media have a place.
Cette étude aborde les récits brefs d’anticipation parus dans la presse entre 1860 et 1940 qui traitent de sexualité. Trois veines distinctes de cette thématique sont envisagées en fonction de leur ...effet littéraire et pragmatique : l’anticipation gauloise, érotico-pornographique et fantaisiste.
Wie und warum verleihen Menschen dem Geld Wert? Wie machen sie aus Schrift Sinn? Diese Fragen stehen immer wieder im Zentrum der literarischen Werke des Freizeitromanciers Ettore Schmitz alias Italo ...Svevo.Als Manager einer Triestiner Schiffslackfabrik verfasst dieser um 1900 Erzählungen und Romane, deren Protagonisten auf oft dilettantische Weise die beiden Medien gegeneinander ausspielen, mit denen Schmitz selbst sich hervorragend auskennt: Schrift und Geld. Unter dem Pseudonym Italo Svevo sollte er als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der italienischen Moderne zu spätem Ruhm gelangen. In dieser ersten deutschsprachigen Monographie zu seinen Werken werden diese zu einem Prisma: Mit ihrer Hilfe eröffnet die Studie eine ungewöhnliche Perspektive auf die turbulente wissenschaftliche Landschaft des Fin de siècle, in der wirtschaftswie medientheoretische Probleme über disziplinäre Grenzen hinweg verhandelt werden – und entwickelt einen neuen Blick auf alte mediale Fragen.
This paper analyses two stories by Henry James and two others by Max Beerbohm whose protagonists are, at the same time, writers and ghosts. Such a diegetic scenario is interesting because it seems to ...point at a disguised metaliterary treatment of current ideas about fin de siècle authoriality and a peculiar metalepsis of the concept of the death of the author, later popularized in post-structuralist France. After a contextualization of Henry James’s and Max Beerbohm’s dissimilar but equally significant contribution to the genre of the ‘Decadent short story’, the discourse turns to the features of their writer-ghosts, in order to retrace not only their conjunctural literary value, but also their fascinating impact on aesthetical matters.

This essay explores the emergence and evolution of a literary and artistic trend in Soviet Estonia from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. During this period, young philologists, poets, artists and ...essayists re-discovered the decadence of the fin-de-siècle and its Estonian expressions as a significant source of inspiration. Generally, in the official Soviet jargon, ‘decadence’ was a highly derogatory term, used during Stalin’s rule to stigmatize all of Western bourgeois culture. Consequently, patriotic scholars, even in the face of easing circumstances, were hesitant to associate early 20th century artists with decadence, as that would have meant condemning them. By the late 1970s, the atmosphere had liberalized enough to make engaging with the motifs and attitudes of decadence less perilous. This shift also provided a means to counter the activism of the 1960s generation, whether loyal to the authorities or dissident. In 1978, Germanist Linnar Priimägi marked the initial steps of the neo-decadence trend with the theoretical manifesto “Decadence as a Cognitive Constant” and the generational manifesto “Tartu Autumn”, co-written with art historian Ants Juske. The former text associated decadence with the appreciation of dispassionate beauty, while the latter expressed refined indolence as the main characteristic of the young generation. References to the decadents of the early 20th century became common among the younger generation of poets, including Doris Kareva, Aado Lintrop, Indrek Hirv, Ilmar Trull, and Hasso Krull. This was accompanied by the rehabilitation of Estonian and Russian decadence in academic literary studies. The emergence of the neo-decadence trend may be attributed to late-Soviet social fatigue and stagnation, the generational desire to distinguish from the dominant 1960s generation, and the growing influence of postmodernism as a departure from the international constructivist and austere style of high modernism. Contemporary criticism occasionally discussed signs of Stoicism, Skepticism, and Epicureanism in culture, sometimes drawing parallels between the emerging postmodernism and Hellenistic imperial culture.
