The Tibetan Plateau is the highest and one of the most demanding environments ever inhabited by humans. We investigated the timing and mechanisms of its initial colonization at the Nwya Devu site, ...located nearly 4600 meters above sea level. This site, dating from 40,000 to 30,000 years ago, is the highest Paleolithic archaeological site yet identified globally. Nwya Devu has yielded an abundant blade tool assemblage, indicating hitherto-unknown capacities for the survival of modern humans who camped in this environment. This site deepens the history of the peopling of the "roof of the world" and the antiquity of human high-altitude occupations more generally.

The historical center of São Luís is host to a diverse historic and urban ensemble, reminiscent of the 18th and 19th centuries. The architectural typology which can be found there illustrates the ...strong influence drawn from the Portuguese style known as Pombalino, developed during the reconstruction process of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. Due to the historical relevance of these buildings which encapsulate this period in time, it is important to preserve and maintain the buildings located in this region. Adaptive reuse projects have an important role to play in preserving architectural ensembles like this. The first part of the adaptive process is to document and understand the original configuration of the building with the aim of maintaining the elements with historical relevance. Therefore, this project proposes the use of a shape grammar approach to analyze floor plans, aiming to further contribute to adaptive reuse projects for ‘Sobrado’ buildings. The process focuses specifically on a case study building and aims to document and identify the specific placement of elements in the floor plan in an effort to provide a deeper understanding of future adaptive reuse.
Prediction of solar irradiance is essential for minimizing energy costs and providing high power quality in electrical power grids with distributed solar photovoltaic generations. However, for ...residential and small commercial users deploying on-site photovoltaic generations, the historical irradiance data can not be obtained directly because of expensive solar irradiance meters. Thanks to increasingly improved weather forecasting service provided by local meteorological organizations, weather forecasting data such as temperature, dew point, humidity, visibility, wind speed and descriptive weather summary, are becoming readily available through the Internet, while the irradiance forecasting data are often unavailable. This paper proposes a novel solar prediction scheme for hourly day-ahead solar irradiance prediction by using the weather forecasting data. This study formulates the prediction problem as a structured output prediction problem jointly predicting multiple outputs simultaneously. The proposed prediction model is trained by using long short-term memory (LSTM) networks taking into account the dependence between consecutive hours of the same day. We compare persistence algorithm, linear least square regression and multilayered feedforward neural networks using backpropagation algorithm (BPNN) for solar irradiance prediction. The experimental results on a dataset collected in island of Santiago, Cape Verde, demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms these competitive algorithms for single output prediction. The proposed algorithm is %18.34 more accurate than BPNN in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) by using about 2 years training data to predict half-year testing data. Moreover, compared with BPNN, the proposed algorithm also shows less overfitting and better generalization capability. For a case using 10 years of historical data to predict 1 year of irradiance data, the prediction RMSE using the proposed LSTM algorithm decreases by 42.9% against BPNN.
•Weather forecasting data are used as input variables for irradiance prediction.•The prediction problem is formulated as a structured output prediction problem.•LSTM is applied to prediction of solar irradiance.

The tragedy that befell Notre Dame Cathedral last month brings to light, on a global stage, the general importance of built heritage. The dominance of the humanities in this field means that ...scientific knowledge, however, is often neglected in decision-making processes, resulting in irreparable damage to historic buildings and social justice issues. How can the natural and social sciences be better harnessed to responsibly and ethically conserve society's built heritage?
The movement of the ground caused by the excavation of subway tunnels and the sinking of the earth's surface inevitably affect above-ground buildings, with the impact on historical and cultural ...buildings, which are already in disrepair, being more prominent. In existing research, the impact of the stiffness of a building itself is often neglected when assessing the influence of the displacement of the stratum caused by tunnel excavation on the building. However, as the settlement and deformation of the building are related to the structural characteristics of the building itself, the effect of the building stiffness should not be completely ignored. This study analyzed the case of the national key protected cultural relics (Red House Hotel) located near the tunnel of the Qingdao Metro (Line 3). Based on the factors affecting the stiffness of the building structure, the Peck empirical formula was modified to predict the effect on the building in the stratum. Subsequently, a three-dimensional finite element model was established and force analysis conducted. Considering the results of the finite element analysis, which determined the stress condition of the cultural relic buildings, a reinforcement design was carried out and implemented in the project.
This research addresses the challenges faced in collecting and managing repair history information for architectural heritage due to its distribution among different institutions. To overcome this ...problem, this study proposes a building information modeling (BIM)-based repair history management framework that links non-formal repair details of architectural heritage to BIM. This framework was applied to the case study of the Great Hero Hall of Sudeoksa Temple in Yesan, South Korea. A repair history database in the form of structured data adhering to the historic building information modeling standard was utilized. The proposed framework effectively syncs the repair history database with BIM to preserve architectural heritage and streamline repair history information updates as well as management. Integrated heritage BIM is anticipated to furnish a thorough knowledge base for architectural heritage, comprising non-geometric details and formal information models, thus enhancing building maintenance planning. Ultimately, the benefits and limitations of the suggested framework and methodologies are deliberated for further implementation.
Abstract
The Gondangdia Station area is one of the areas where the TOD concept development has been implemented in Jakarta. This station is located in the Menteng area which is a cultural heritage ...area. This study aims to explain the application of the TOD concept in the Gondangdia Station area physically and see its impact on the Menteng cultural heritage area. Search data using a field survey method by observing the urban environment along a radius of 1 kilometer from Gondangdia Station. The data analysis is based on the evaluation of 8 aspects of TOD from ITDP and looks at the effect of the implementation of the TOD on the Menteng cultural heritage area. The results showed that of the eight aspects of TOD that were evaluated, most of them were available, but not all aspects met the existing provisions. Aspects that need to be completed and improved are transit facilities, bicycle lanes, and activity zoning integration (mixed land use). The existence of TOD-based development in the Menteng cultural heritage area generally has a positive impact on accessibility and environmental improvement. Unfortunately, the historical buildings there are less integrated with other TOD elements.
