The genre of the historical novel, in which the historical past is reconstructed, implies a special work of the writer with language - the main means of materializing, embodying and detailing the ...depicted historical reality. The artistic materialization of the objective world of the historical period, recreated in the novel under study is carried out by the author of the work through a description of household items and interior, beliefs and superstitions, the way of managing, ethics and speech culture, relations between estates, etc. Expressed by phraseological units, idiomatic expressions, dialect words, including obsolete reconstruction of the surrounding reality and the spiritual and psychological sphere, the inner world of the characters requires special attention of the translator. The purpose of the article is to comprehend and describe the ethnolinguistic units (phraseological word combination, idioms, dialect words, realities) found in Adam Mekebaevs historical novel A Cache in the Steppe, and to substantiate their translation into Russian. The author of the article is the author of the translation of the novel into Russian.
Este artigo sustenta que, durante a primeira metade do século XX, ao lado do esforço para a construção de uma narrativa “científica e moderna” da História do Brasil, também se construiu uma narrativa ...de história ensinável para um grande público. Ela mobilizou muitos intelectuais – historiadores, literatos, editores, artistas plásticos etc – traduzindo-se numa espécie de matriz que passou a integrar a cultura política e a cultura histórica republicana do país. Aqui se analisa um exemplo paradigmático desse tipo de narrativa: o romance histórico A Marquesa de Santos, escrito pelo paulista Paulo Setubal e publicado em 1925.
El presente artículo se centra en la novela histórica La casa alemana y su traducción del alemán al español, dado el éxito internacional que ha obtenido y la importancia del tema: los procesos de ...Auschwitz celebrados en Frankfurt en la década de 1960. El objetivo es determinar cómo puede traducirse el lenguaje de especialidad en un texto literario, más concretamente una novela histórica. A tal fin se ha extraído el lenguaje jurídico presente en la novela y se ha analizado su traducción cuantitativa y cualitativamente con base en las técnicas empleadas. Los resultados muestran un esfuerzo por parte de la traductora para trasvasar el contexto histórico-jurídico de la manera más precisa posible, al tiempo que realiza las adaptaciones necesarias para cumplir la función estética del texto literario. Los hallazgos no coinciden con trabajos anteriores que detectaron una fuerte desterminologización en textos similares y sus traducciones.
The lifespan and popularity of a subgenre are determined by the inventiveness with which novelists develop and innovate the standard formulas. The judicial novel emerges as an extension of the ...popularity of the outlaw novel, adding a technical dimension to the misdeeds committed by wrongdoers. The outlaw and judicial novels are anthropomorphized subgenres that set in motion symbolic models, with a central figure dominating the entire course of events. The judicial novel reconfigures the perspective of naturalism, transforming the social milieu into a triggering factor for reprehensible acts. Shocking acts, such as crimes or suicides, and their mysterious circumstances, are analyzed from multiple angles, akin to using a set of parallel mirrors, while the brisk steps of investigations are fascinatingly reconstructed within the eloquent phrases of the novelists. One of the central ideas that the judicial novel seeks to develop is the sacrifice as a social practice, whether symbolic, articulated in the imposition of precarious living conditions leading to extreme gestures. Spatiality and temporality constitute the central pillars that compose the dramatic scenes of the Romanian judicial novel. Crimes are plotted and committed in the moonlight, in neighborhoods or on winding streets. The schematism of gloomy settings and the rudimentary nature of character profiles are countered by allusions to an undefined darkness, the contours of which elude discernment. The judicial subgenre utilizes conventions from the detective novel formula, involving the exaggeration of a cause-and-effect relationship as inevitable and the conquest of a reassuring imaginary, complementary to the moral imperatives discussed by Romanian novelists determined to rehabilitate the reputation of the genre through fictional digressions on morality. In its dimension of historical crime fiction, the Romanian judicial novel not only accentuates its documentary aspect, showing how the institutions responsible for investigations and judicial processes function but also the expansiveness of historicizing interpretations of the analyzed bloody events. Within the context of a dynamically structured novel distinguished by thematic configuration and ideological significance, the incorporation of illustrations transcends mere decorative intent. The judicial novel strategically incorporates illustrations as a highly effective extratextual approach. This not only disrupts the linear narrative trajectory and heightens suspense but also concurrently bestows substance upon the ethereal images adeptly invoked by the literary text.
Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s novel Kintu (2014) places alongside forms of historical fiction familiar to European readers, a form of historical causality that obeys a different logic, namely, one ...governed by the long-term efficacity of a curse uttered in pre-colonial Buganda. The novel can be read as a historiographical experiment. It sets in a relationship of ‘proximity’ linear historical narration as understood within the framework of European historicism and the genre of the historical novel theorised by Lukács, and notions of magical ‘verbal-incantatory’ and ‘somatic’ history that elude the logic of hegemonic European historicism but nonetheless cohabit the same fictional space. Makumbi’s novel thus sketches an ‘entanglement’ of various historical temporalities that are articulated upon one another within the capacious realm of fiction, thereby reinforcing a cosmic ontology and axiology of reciprocity and fluid duality whose infringement in fact triggers the curse at the origin of the narrative.
Bataille de Kirholm by Henri Krasiński and the transnational Polish-French historical novel in the Romantic era
The author of the article proposes an interpretation of the novel Bataille de Kirholm ...by Henri Krasiński through the notions of francophony, migration and transnationalism. He analyzes the authorial posture adopted by the writer, based on his migrant status, but also the poetics of his text, based on the transposition into French of Polish historical, cultural and linguistic elements. He thus intends to underline the interest of a little-known literary phenomenon, that of historical novels with Polish subject, published in the Romantic era by French-speaking Polish authors.
In the novel two individuals from dissimilar spatio-cultural backgrounds alternate in first-person narration. The voices are Hannah’s, a 31-year-old American postdoctoral researcher, who comes to ...Paris to investigate the empirical history of French women during the German Occupation, and Tariq’s, a nineteen-year-old Moroccan runaway. Hannah engages Tariq to assist her with interviews of witnesses still alive and translations of the recorded testimonies that were hardly ever raised to public awareness. The two narrators share the non-committal starting position that is for the American based on her scholarly approach from overseas and for Tariq on his adventurous youth, as on his ignorance of Europe and French (colonial) history. The question how to acknowledge the visibilised is addressed on several narrative and generational levels: in the embedded stories told at different times by the witnesses, and in the explorers’ response to the accounts they are confronted with in their dislocated situation.
Georg Lukács’s seminal work
