Max Aub's work is characterized by a labyrinthine, obsessive and many-sided inner world, which could be expressed only when allowed. Therefore, it is not strange that the complete elaboration and the ...revision of Aub's personal notes offer numberless happy discoveries. Working as editor of Campo de sangre within the frame of Obras completas published by the Biblioteca Valenciana, my most important finding was that of many notebooks (fifteen by now) including the skeleton and first notes of the novels. The target of this article is to reconstruct the genesis of this novel, starting from that autobiographical materíal and making some hypotheses to give an account of the radical turn from the first ideas of Campo de sangre to the definite writíng of the novel. On the other hand, this article intends to be a contribution to enlighten Max Aub's image as man and creator, in case these facets can be considered separately.
Max Aub's legacy has recently helped to find some of the author's autograph testimonies than enlighten his printed work. The manuscript of the historical novel Campo del Moro (1963) is here described ...and the contributions of a modern manuscript to a critical-genetic edition are also appreciated. The composition elements of Campo del Moro are particularly analyzed the title, the quotations, the working plan and the notes about the characters. All this results in a better knowledge of the novel, giving us the possibility of describing the process of its writing so as to facilitate the narration of its editorial vicissitudes, i.e. genesis, preparation, edition, and publication.
This study`s purpose is to disclose the segmentation aspects between historical nonfiction and modern historical novel. The latter is related to the former from the point of view of sharing with ...correct idea on history. However, as a matter of discourse those are two different things. This study`s the ultimate objective is to examine these two writings` dynamic phases competing each other. In addition to it, this study verifies the assumption that between them the relative importance of narrative moved from correct idea on history to composition sense in the writers posture, from facts to fictions, and from history`s lessons to amusements in the readers` hope horizon. Therefore this study will suggest a new paradigm to reconstruct the history of modern historical literature in Korea which is summarized in antagonism and eclecticism between correct idea on history to composition sense.
It has been a riddle for those who study Max Aub's work to find out which is the limit between fiction and reality in the historical novel Jusep Torres Campalans. This article is based on a huge ...documentation about Picasso and the Parisian artistic environment before 1914. The character of Ana María Merkel, the painter's mate, was totally invented: but this woman, Max Aub's contemporary, did exist, and tracing her back we find a painful image of feminine artists, reflecting a traditional inequality in the social recognition of female art.
Because many nineteenth-century novels take the form of fictional conjectural histories, analysis can reveal the features they share with Enlightenment conjectural narratives as well as the ...intertwining developments in novels and in social thought, especially sociology, from about 1815 to 1910. The discussion in this chapter does not accept a contradiction between formal and historical approaches. Rather, I propose seeing literary form as a form of thought and knowledge, examining continuities between the conjectural historical form, emergent social fields, and a line of fiction that includes Walter Scott’s historical novels, especiallyWaverley(1814); Honoré de Balzac’sLost Illusions(1837–43);
In the introduction I identify two dimensions of late modernism’s outward turn to everyday life: it mediates a structural transformation in the world-system and induces a change in the priorities and ...functions of modernist art and literature. In this chapter I address two late modernist renovations of the historical novel in the 1930s. For a decade laboring under sustained economic decline and increasing war, this genre offered one way to think historically about the present moment.¹ Both Virginia Woolf and Christopher Isherwood, one a dominant figure of the teens and twenties and the other who flourished in the thirties and
