Moreover, after 1990, the opening up and development of the history of education in the international space can be observed in the region. To explore the presented issues, three countries in this region of Europe are presented as individual case studies: Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. From the second half of the XVIII century, a new administrative structure and political understanding developed in the Indian subcontinent, which was completely under the control of the British. The ...negative policies implemented by the British government prompted the Muslim leaders in the region to take action to protect their Islamic identity and to guide religious life. As a result of the intellectual activity that developed in connection with this, Indian Muslims entered the process of "revival" in line with various views and schools formed within the framework of these views. As a result of this revival and its reflections in the field of education, a large part of the Muslim population preferred to focus on traditional education carried out in madrasahs, while the other part turned to modern educational institutions and opened universities, colleges and research centers. The awareness, education and training activities initiated by Sayyid Ahmed Han against the colonialism policy implemented by the British in India and developed with the contribution of many leaders are called the Aligarh school. In this restructuring process, the Aligarh School has adopted the policy of getting along with the British and the need to modernize the institutions in order to secure the future of the Muslims in the Indian sub-continent. As long as Muslims stayed away from politics, they would not have gained political, religious and cultural gains against Hindus and British. Those who grew up in the Aligarh College or University, was founded played a role in the intellectual infrastructure of the South Asian Muslims' independence movement. In this context, many social, educational and political leaders were able to emerge among Muslims thanks to this university. These leaders have played important roles in the political history of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
Transnational history has grown significantly over the last three decades. This approach offers new research perspectives for historical inquiries by focusing on processes of interconnection that often transcend national boundaries. In line with this historiographical trend, this special issue aims to analyze, from a historical perspective, the national and international circulation of actors, knowledge and models in education drawing on case studies from the 19th- and 20th-centuries. This special issue additionally offers a survey of the historiography of transnational circulations in education in the late modern and contemporary periods.
Since the last quarter of the 20th century, many researchers and historians have endeavored to trace the emer-gence, development, and establishment of a site of circulation – involving actors, objects, knowledge, networks, etc. – between different regions of the world. This historical scholarship has been central to the emergence of what is now commonly known as the transnational turn in the humanities and social sciences. In the field of the history of education, this transnational perspective has grown quite significantly in France in recent years. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this article aims at highlighting the interest and stakes of this scholarly approach that has signifi-cantly contributed to our understanding of educational realities in the 19th- and 20th-centuries, especially in tran-satlantic areas.
Catholic schools are the main alternative to state-run educational entities around the world. They are subject not only to the authorities of the country in which they operate but also to the ...authorities of the Vatican. The prefect who manages the dicastery responsible for catholic schooling therefore has influence over education on a global scale. Among dicastery administrators after the Second Vatican Council, we should mention the Polish Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, who led the way in terms of academic achievements, teaching and the amount of attention and effort devoted to pedagogical issues. In the paper, Zenon Grocholewski’s views on education in general, Catholic schools, higher education and the formation of the clergy are presented and the dominant categories are identified. Finally, an attempt is made to evaluate his beliefs (including their compatibility with the teachings of the Church) and to place them in the broader context of pedagogical thought.
In Bolivia, education was a major concern throughout the 20th century, as in much of Latin America. But in this country it acquired a specificity that marked the trajectories of the socio-political ...movements involved, as well as institutional responses generated by the State. This was largely due to the demographic and cultural weight of the indigenous peoples that inhabit the territory and the vitality of their social and political practices. The general objective of this research is to give an account of the trajectories of the discourses on the functions of education for indigenous peoples through the critical reading of materials produced from the self-ascribed enunciation as indigenous -individual and collective- and the enunciation of the State through the educational reforms of 1955, 1994 and 2010. The exploration will try to reveal the interrelations between these debates, the negotiations and the articulations generated.
