This article proposes a meta-historiographic reflection on modes of investigation of the history of didactics of language teaching in the research field of Historiography of Linguistics. This ...discussion is accompanied by brief case studies that aim to illustrate theoretical-methodological considerations presented. Our main aim is to show how processes that surround pedagogical practices, at different times throughout history, can be legitimate objects of a historiography that is concerned with understanding the construction and diffusion of knowledge about language.
First, we trace the history of second language acquisition (SLA) from early stages in the mid-twentieth century to today. We next consider the status of the field in today's research world with a ...particular focus on all aspects of methodology and, finally, we take a look at the future and discuss issues related to scientific rigor in light of Open Science.
This article provides an introduction, based on the most recent research available, to the history of language learning and teaching (HoLLT) in Britain. After an overview of the state of research, I ...consider which languages have been learnt, why and how that has changed; the role of teachers and tests in determining what was taught; changes in how languages have been taught (and why); and the emergence of the modern infrastructure of language teaching policy and practice. I conclude with case study of the contribution of Walter Rippmann, a key figure, in the period 1895 to ca. 1920, a time of professionalisation of language teaching and of efforts towards innovation and change, which set the agenda for many of the major developments of the twentieth century, including a call for scientifically based language teaching and a greater emphasis on the spoken language.

Radhika offers a historical overview of multilingual education. For a long period of time, languages have been treated through a monolingual lens and have been taught based on certain assumptions ...that are traced to the " Great Reform" in the 19th century. Major ideas from the period include ideas that consider the skill of speaking as basic in comparison to writing, an aversion to explicit discussion of grammar, and views language to be practiced as whole rather than as discrete parts. The impact of these assumptions on classroom teaching ebbed and flowed throughout history. However, the assumption of discouraging the use of L1 in the classroom and keeping languages separate has not been widely disputed in the language teaching field.
The history of the language represents a moment of deep knowledge in the development of the political thought of the Nation. With regard to the Italian language, we must recognize observations and ...summaries of linguistic history produced ever since the origins of the language itself. A short number of examples, coming from the history of the Italian language, and from the history of Italian literature, will be considered. We will consider in which way the language has been taught over time and the University statement.
This volume takes stock of the current state of the historical lexicography of German, sounding out the prospects for future research. It focuses on the ongoing development of dictionary projects in ...the digital age.
