This open access book sheds light on the term gongsheng/kyōsei, which is used in Chinese and Japanese to not only translate “symbiosis” in biology but also broadly deployed in philosophical, social ...and political contexts. It is a cross-contextual attempt to study the foundation of gongsheng/kyōsei as a philosophy of co-becoming, with exploration of its significance for thinking about the planetary challenges of our times.

This comment draws on Paul Tapsell’s work on taonga to help make explicit some of what I take to be working behind Dan Hikuroa’s writings on taniwha and thus Justine Kingsbury’s Taniwha project. I ...detail some of the insights that a more detailed and complex account of taniwha—one that is framed around taniwha and taonga relationships—can provide. I contend that understanding taniwha in relation to taonga helps to highlight the way that Kingsbury’s account necessarily lacks elements essential to taniwha themselves and essential to their relationships with taonga. On the back of this contention, one conclusion we come to is that Kingsbury merely offers us a way of taking some aspects of taniwha seriously. Another, and perhaps more important conclusion, is that our discussion of taniwha and taonga provides us with a way to recast Kingsbury’s project—allowing us to take as our focus (and thereby value) relationships between taniwha, taonga, and tangata. One upshot is a framework for thinking about what is required to enable deeper and harder conversations later on that are framed in relational terms too. This, I argue, might not only be a more fruitful approach, but one more in line with Kingsbury’s aspirations.

This paper will investigate whether or not intercultural philosophy conceived as a cooperative activity can be used to reflect and broaden the horizon of philosophy through reciprocal engagements by ...different socio-cultural blocs. We argue that the concept of social integration is met with so much uncertainty in a world where the influences of colonialism and coloniality bid to impose the cultural particular of the West on the rest of the world. This has created a divisive world of insider and outsider, superior and inferior forms of cultural othering. As a result, people often focus on the differences that exist among worldviews and experiences while overlooking the importance of social collaboration between different socio-cultural blocs. Our aim in this paper is to tap into intercultural philosophy, and use the framework of complementary reflection to illustrate how social collaboration can be attained by undermining cultural hegemony. To achieve this aim, we employ an understanding of intercultural philosophy as a cooperative activity and explore how it can help broaden the horizon of diverse worldviews with the purpose of reciprocal enlightenment.
The political ideal of today's society is to achieve intercultural social integration that can guarantee well-being and peace through solidarity. These are two principles of hope of great ethical ...value for citizens who participate jointly in public life and private life. But the achievement of a subsidiary society of common goods for all and guarantor of social peace, requires a set of duties and rights enshrined in standards to be fulfilled for all on equal terms, which could be validated from: i) a practical speech ethical-moral, that is in solidarity with the other in intercultural terms; and ii) individual and collective actions, whose interests are committed to that good life that you want to share in equal conditions.
El ideal político de la sociedad actual es lograr una integración social intercultural que pueda garantizar a través de la solidaridad el bienestar y la paz mundial. Estos son dos principios de esperanza de mucho valor ético para los ciudadanos que participan, conjuntamente, en la vida pública para lograr un mundo mejor para todos los involucrados. Pero el logro de una sociedad subsidiaria de bienes comunes para todos y garante de la paz social, requiere de un conjunto de deberes y derechos consagrados en normas a cumplir para todos en igualdad de condiciones, que se podrían convalidar desde: i) un discurso práctico ético-moral, que se solidarice con el otro en términos interculturales; y ii) de acciones individuales y colectivas, cuyos intereses estén comprometidos con ese buen vivir que se desea compartir en igualdad de condiciones.
The phenomenology of space is linked to the body experience, where the situatedness (Befindlichheit) plays the fundamental attribute of existence, and space becomes a structural element of meaning ...construction, while the space itself is constructed and extended by way of intersubjectivity or Mitsein in this process. The phenomenology of space, which is portrayed through embodiment, situatedness, meaning construction, and Mitsein, poses a new requirement for the writing of the history of philosophy in the age of globalization, which is to break the Western-centric perspective and to discuss the pluralistic philosophy based on the differences of the spatial experience. By redrawing the map of world philosophy in an intercultural perspective, the pluralistic philosophical traditions can establish the new self-understandings and self-positionings, in order to respect the diversity of human civilization, to unite the common values of all mankind, and to build a human community with a shared future.
