The essay deals with problems encountered by Western researchers working in the field of Chinese philosophy. It begins with a discussion of intercultural and transcultural methodologies and ...illuminates some of the most common issues inherent in traditional intercultural comparisons in the field of philosophy. Taking into account the current state of the so-called postcomparative discourses in the field of transcultural philosophy and starting from the notion of culturally divergent frames of reference, it focuses upon semantic aspects of the Chinese philosophical tradition and exposes the need for discursive translations. On this basis, a new postcomparative approach in transcultural philosophical studies of Chinese philosophy is suggested. In this context, the author proposes the application of an innovative principle, based upon what can preliminary be denoted as the method of sublation.
The present paper aims to shed light on certain methodological challenges that Chinese intellectuals faced in the process of coming to terms with Marxist thought. Even at the beginning of these ...processes, i.e., in the first decades of the 20th century, Chinese theorists faced several difficulties regarding the issue of cross-cultural philosophical syntheses. Thus, in their endeavours to adapt Marxism to the specifically Chinese worldview, they sought suitable adaptations of traditional philosophical methodologies that would enable them to fruitfully integrate classical Chinese and modern Marxist discourses. Zhang Dainian 張岱年 (1909–2004) has played a particularly prominent role in this process. Therefore, this paper aims to shed light on his contribution to the establishment of new Chinese and cross-cultural philosophical methodologies. In terms of exploring general philosophical issues, Zhang established a unique philosophical system known as “neo-materialism” in which he attempted to integrate Marxist materialism with some basic approaches of traditional Chinese philosophy. The crucial features that defined this philosophical system were based on his innovative methodology, which is critically presented in this paper.
Given the awareness of the risks of traditional, colonialist, Eurocentric, and monodisciplinary teaching in philosophy, there is a need to think and propose a methodological shift that have an impact ...on young people, especially those who are part of communities’ minority and ethno-educational contexts. Therefore, the central purpose of this research article is to expose the design process of a philosophy area plan in high school mediated didactically by the arts, with a critical intercultural approach, which in turn seeks to contribute to empowerment and recognition culture of the students of the Educational Institution Humberto Jordán Mazuera, of the city of Cali. It was used a methodological approach derived from the work of Michel Foucault, known as Historical Ontology, which is part of the critical paradigm and which in this case, made use of qualitative research procedures such as interviews focus groups, and characterization of the student population to recognize the diversity present in the classroom and its perception in the face of cultural recognition and the importance of art in their training. As a result of this process, thematic units of the area of philosophy focused on critical interculturality were generated in connection with a great variety of didactic strategies, so that, from art, the teaching of this area of knowledge can generate an impact in the life projects of the students, their families, and their closest community.
The author of the article analyses the problem of climate change by comparing the philosophical ideas of the leading figure of Chinese Daoism Laozi and the German philosopher Norbert Bolz. The ...article highlights the complexity, relevance and interdisciplinarity of the problem. It is assumed that the focus on the problem of climate change is closely linked to changes in the social structure of the Western society and the controversial technological progress that has already made it possible to capture the signs of global warming in nature. At the same time, the problem of climate change is seen as a conflict of different interpretations. For this reason, emphasis is placed on the need for a dialogue between specialists in natural and social sciences as well as humanities in addressing issues arising from the latter problem.
In this paper, we argue that conversational thinking, a recent formulation in African philosophy, could be an alternative method for intercultural philosophising. We show that the etymology of ...conversational thinking comes from the Igbo word arumaruka meaning 'constructive engagements amongst stakeholders who are in a relationship of creative struggle'. We contend that philosophers from different philosophic traditions are equal stakeholders in the knowledge enterprise called intercultural philosophy. We explain that in addition to dialogue and polylogue, two influential methods used by intercultural philosophers nowadays, conversational thinking could be a veritable alternative and a contribution from an underrepresented philosophic clime namely, the African philosophy tradition. We discuss the African philosophy roots of conversationalism, highlight the stages of intercultural engagement, and show what the method might look like in application.
