Like Novilla, Plato's city is marked by an absence of passion or excess; here desire, yearning, and restlessness have ended: "human beings can approach a state of collective lassitude and ...indifference and in that paradoxical sense, because they are human, can cease to be human by ceasing to care about what it is to be human" (38). Pippin argues that the trilogy explores the fundamental oppositions of Western philosophy—physic and nomos, nature and convention, and eros and justice—and is marked by an "anti-dualist animus" (125) that is perhaps nowhere more evident than in Schooldays. The action of this fiction converges around the murder of Ana Magdalena (David's dance instructor) by Dmitri (the caretaker at a museum).
Inhuman Intertextuality: Notes on the Quotations in Poesie della fine del mondo ABSTRACT Delfini's way of writing is often tinged with intertextual quotations or allusions which prove to be ...functional within his work.

The study identifies and classifies the criteria instrumented to categorise and analyse precedence-setting tokens as units of sociocultural experience expressed in language and encapsulating some ...primary knowledge transmitted in the process of national, cultural and global development of a community. The authors set out to define and describe the essence of precedence-setting tokens as linguoculturological and socially and culturally significant units and offer an explanation for their typological categorisation based on theoretical observations cumulated from available studies on the concept in question. The study uses typological analysis to distinguish significant, internally homogeneous, qualitatively different groups of examined objects characterised by type-forming features of varying nature, as well as the functional approach whereby the perspectives of both the speaker and the listener are considered systemically to describe the functional potential enabling fulfillment of their communicative needs and intentions. The study claims that considered as units of language and speech that perform a set of specific communicative functions, precedence-setting tokens carry an extensive applicative potential, which can be highlighted by examining their eight key functions – nominative, persuasive, aesthetic, expressive, evaluative, comic, euphemistic, and the function of identity assessment.
The cultural profile of the literary haut lieu that is Edinburgh is marked by a strong interest in the violent history of the city, specifically, in its legacy of crime. This legacy is preserved in a ...variety of material and immaterial archives, including a substantial body of fictional and non-fictional literature, and inscribed in the Edinburgh cityscape. It is also commodified so as to attract the international tourist trade. Using as its prime example Ian Rankin’s 2001 Rebus novel The Falls, this paper sketches the cultural history of one notorious criminal case, that of William Burke and William Hare. In particular, it discusses the spatio-temporal referentiality of texts about Burke and Hare and situates them in the wider context of the Scottish literary tradition.

The present article explores the hypothesis that there is an intertextual relationship between Widsith and antecedent literary traditions pertaining to Woden. This hypothesis is shown to shed light ...on various features of Widsith, such as the speaker's extended lifespan, his propensity for wandering, his fondness for the transgressive king Eormanric, his visitation to other doomed kings such as Guðhere and Ælfwine, and his presence at the greatest battles in legendary history, where kinsmen battled each other at a counselor's instigation. It demonstrates that interpreting Widsith as an avatar of Woden, if not Woden himself, enables the excavation of layers of meaning that have hitherto remained buried within this difficult and obscure poem.
This essay discusses how issues of otherness/identity are at the heart of Patience Agbabi’s poetry collection Telling Tales (2014). A rewriting of Geoffey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, the work of the ...British-Nigerian author addresses alterity through the representation of a heterogeneous group of present-day pilgrims interacting with one another as they are travelling on a bus from Tabard Inn to Canterbury Cathedral. The essay investigates how Agbabi’s poems rewrite Chaucer’s work from a twenty-first century perspective, and deal with alterity in the form of an unfinished dialogue with the medieval text and in ways which encompass not only moral, ethical or social questions, but also formal and generic issues. It shows that poetry’s potential for ‘harbouring otherness’ is linked to an hybridization whose site is also the literary text: poetry, and more specifically the poetic subgenre of the dramatic monologue, is adapted by Agbabi in order to host a dialogic, heteroglossic and novelized dimension.
