The use of digital technologies has transformed the processes of writing for academic journals and the dissemination and preservation of academic work. It has also made the measurement of the impact ...of publications in academic journals easier and this information more accessible to authors. In this article I discuss some of the ways in which digital technologies have changed writing for academic journals as well as how digital technologies are being used in the submission and review of journal articles. This includes ways in which academic work can be stored and shared, the use of citation management tools, and the sharing of research materials once an article has been accepted for publication. I also give an overview of how digital technologies are being used in the review of journal articles including the use of plagiarism detection software. Issues in online publishing are outlined as is the development of open-access journals and the rise of predatory publishers. Social media and journal publishing and the use of multimodality in research article writing are also discussed. Author abstract
Both sharing and using open research data have the revolutionary potentials for forwarding scientific advancement. Although previous research gives insight into researchers' drivers and inhibitors ...for sharing and using open research data, both these drivers and inhibitors have not yet been integrated via a thematic analysis and a theoretical argument is lacking. This study's purpose is to systematically review the literature on individual researchers' drivers and inhibitors for sharing and using open research data. This study systematically analyzed 32 open data studies (published between 2004 and 2019 inclusively) and elicited drivers plus inhibitors for both open research data sharing and use in eleven categories total that are: 'the researcher's background', 'requirements and formal obligations', 'personal drivers and intrinsic motivations', 'facilitating conditions', 'trust', 'expected performance', 'social influence and affiliation', 'effort', 'the researcher's experience and skills', 'legislation and regulation', and 'data characteristics.' This study extensively discusses these categories, along with argues how such categories and factors are connected using a thematic analysis. Also, this study discusses several opportunities for altogether applying, extending, using, and testing theories in open research data studies. With such discussions, an overview of identified categories and factors can be further applied to examine both researchers' drivers and inhibitors in different research disciplines, such as those with low rates of data sharing and use versus disciplines with high rates of data sharing plus use. What's more, this study serves as a first vital step towards developing effective incentives for both open data sharing and use behavior.
PurposeThe academic community has warned that predatory journals may attempt to capitalize on the confusion caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to further publish low quality academic work, eroding the ...credibility of scholarly publishing.Design/methodology/approachThis article first chronicles the risks of predatory publishing, especially related to misinformation surrounding health research. Next, the author offers an empirical investigation of how predatory publishing has engaged with COVID-19, with an emphasis on journals related to virology, immunology and epidemiology as identified through Cabells' Predatory Reports, through a content analysis of publishers' websites and a comparison to a sample from DOAJ.FindingsThe empirical findings show that there were 162 titles related to these critical areas from journals listed on Cabells with a range of infractions, but most were defunct and only 39 had published on the pandemic. Compared to a DOAJ comparison group, the predatory journal websites were less likely to mention slowdowns to the peer review process related to the pandemic. Furthermore, another 284 predatory journals with COVID-19 engagement were uncovered from the initial exploration. These uncovered journals mostly centered on medical or biological science fields, while 42 titles came from other broader fields in social science, other STEM or humanities.Originality/valueThis study does not prove that predatory publications have released misinformation pertaining to COVID-19, but rather it exemplifies the potential within a complex academic publishing space. As these outlets have proven to be vectors of misleading science, libraries and the broader educational community need to stay vigilant as information intermediaries of online research.
Meta‐analysis has become the conventional approach to synthesizing the results of empirical economics research. To further improve the transparency and replicability of the reported results and to ...raise the quality of meta‐analyses, the Meta‐Analysis of Economics Research Network has updated the reporting guidelines that were published by this Journal in 2013. Future meta‐analyses in economics will be expected to follow these updated guidelines or give valid reasons why a meta‐analysis should deviate from them.

In this issue of International Migration, we are happy to be introducing a new occasional feature, the Policy Interview. Because International Migration is not only a peer-reviewed academic journal ...but one with a mandate to inform policy audiences, we want to develop our role as bridge builders between the research and policy sectors.
With this Forum contribution I wish to shed light on the problematic developments in scientific publishing resulting from the strong push of science funders towards gold open access (OA). This has ...given rise to numerous “predatory” journals, that maximise profit at the expense of scientific quality. With a bibliometric analysis in the field of ecology I demonstrate that over the period 2014–2022 the publication numbers in “predatory” OA journals have grown exponentially (+44% annually), while in all other journal types, article numbers were stagnating or even decreasing since a few years. Then I highlight how different OA publication models from society-owned journals to publisher-owned “predatory” journals, differ in the prices authors pay and how the income is split between effective costs, pure profit and money transferred back to science. To help with the recognition of the different journal types, I provide a list journals in the fields of ecology and organismal botany that are owned by academic societies, as well as a list of criteria to recognize “predatory” journals. Authors, reviewers and editors should consider carefully where they submit papers or provide volunteer service. My suggestion is to prioritize society-owned journals, while avoiding cooperation with “predatory” journals. Science funders and libraries have played a major role in the negative developments reviewed in this paper, but at the same time they have the capacity to change the course, mainly by two steps: In the short term they should link the payment of article processing charges (APCs) to strict quality criteria, while in the medium term, they should overcome the gold OA system towards a diamond OA system that would avoid the inflation of low-quality publications and remove barriers not only from readers, but also from authors, while at the same time likely reducing the overall costs.

The paper presents the contributions of participants at the consultation on scientific and professional publications on e-journals at the beginning of the 1990s, which was organised at the Institute ...of Information Science (IZUM) in Maribor in December 1991. The emphasis is also placed on IZUM's e-bulletin, which was entered into one of the first directories of e-journals and other e-bulletins worldwide from the same year. Communication is the essence of scientific progress, particularly e-journals. The advantages and disadvantages of e-journals are listed. Citation and other factors of research and business success of online and printed scientific and professional journals are presented. The importance of transparency for the quality and selection of a scientific and professional journal for publishing original and other scientific articles is evaluated. Falsification of critical rationalism is emphasised as an effective replacement for the classic observation and induction research method as a new criterion for the distinction (demarcation) between scientific theory and pseudoscience. E-journals have changed the fundamental processes in science, education, work, employment, information exchange and scientific information and communication, and, in synergy with the emergence of big data, brought about a new scientific paradigm for the understanding of findings and knowledge. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of reading scientific literature.
This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive retrospective analysis of the International Review of Economics and Finance (IREF). Using the bibliometric approach, the study analyses the journal's ...performance, citation structure, network connection, and mapping analysis through which a conceptual structure is developed. The Scopus database is used to retrieve data and a wide range of bibliometric tools are utilized for analysis such as RStudio “Biblioshiny” package, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel. Analysing IREF performance over the last twenty-nine-years (1992–2020), the findings reveal that the most prolific authors have USA and China affiliations; the journal's authors derive their information and build on research from sources that are ranked (Q1, A*, 4, 4* and SSCI), which indicates high connectedness between IREF content and published work in top sources in economics and finance. Moreover, the citation of the journal is surging in an unprecedented way during the last five years. Thus, IREF has positioned itself as one of the most influential sources, especially in finance. Its citation performance is close to the Journal of Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, and Journal of Corporate Finance, while being above many esteemed finance journals, such as Review of Finance, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, and Journal of Empirical Finance. The most prominent themes discussed in the journal are capital structure, economic growth, corporate governance, monetary policy, foreign direct investment, exchange rates, and emerging markets. This article presents the trending topics in IREF over the last three decades, which is helpful for the journal's board of editors in drawing a successful strategy based on a bibliometric study of the economics and finance field, where it is likely to garner interest.
•A scientometric analysis of 29 years of IREF is performed.•IREF published 2036 articles and reviews between 1992 and 2020.•IREF has grown considerably in terms of publication and citation positioning.•The study identified the most relevant and influential scientific actors in the journal.•Thematic analyses reveal that IREF focus on original and contemporary topics in economics and finance.
