In the knowledge society, conceptions about the value of DE have been challenged by transformations in its characteristics and finalities fostered by global drivers of change, including widening the ...purposes of higher education. This study explores the perceived value of DE in social and health sciences within the intersection of the purposes of higher education in the European knowledge society. Data were collected using 25 focus groups with members of scientific and monitoring commissions, supervisors, PhD candidates and holders from one Portuguese university's doctoral programmes in social and health sciences. The study identified three dimensions of the value of DE: personal, academic and career agency and development; knowledge and knowledge outputs and outcomes; and socioeconomic impact. These multiple dimensions of value coexist and interact in ways that may reinforce or hinder each other. Our findings reflect an ecological university constantly re-organising in the context of the knowledge society. The study stresses the need to strive for a better balance between the ecosystems involved in DE to foster its potential contribution to understanding and (re)creating a knowledge society that effectively strives for the betterment of the world.

Concurrently, these varied sources contribute to the augmentation of economic and tourism infrastructure within the state, while concurrently fortifying governments and nations against external interventions.The primary aim of this study is to underscore the critical significance of diversifying systematic sources of political and strategic thinking among individuals, particularly within the framework of knowledge society construction. This diversification not only shapes the societal perceptions and choices but also secures the integrity and steadiness of nations, providing a bulwark against potential manipulation in the future.

In the era of a global knowledge economy, urban regions that seek to increase their competitive edge, become destinations for talent and investment and provide prosperity and high quality of life to their inhabitants have little chance of achieving these goals without forming effective knowledge-based urban development strategies. The research reported in this paper aims to address the questions of how a knowledge-based urban development performance measurement can be undertaken and the value contribution of such measurement. The paper focuses on the city of Helsinki. This empirical study analytically investigates Helsinki’s performance from the lens of knowledge-based urban development by comparing this urban region with eight international competitors, Boston, San Francisco, Birmingham, Manchester, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, and Vancouver. The results of the study not only reveal a clearer understanding of Helsinki’s benchmarked performance and competitive edge considering the regional policy context along with strategic directions in strengthening its international standing and competitiveness but also provide useful insights for other urban regions that aspire to such development.
The article aims to analyze, from a theoretical point of view, the aspects related to the presence of lifelong learning in the knowledge society, as a contribution to the perfection of human ...personality, but also as a mean to achieve balance and performance individually, professionally and socially. The features of the society we claim from the perspective of modern times will be highlighted, characterized, as a whole, by a dynamism and an unprecedented information-technological evolution, with a difficult future to predict. In this context, man must constantly improve, be adaptable and perform, and the key to success is to invest in quality education (we refer here to any kind of educational influence), education that must – or should – overlap with throughout life. The study aims to define lifelong learning, focusing on possible conceptual confusions, to establish the features of this education, as well as possible ways to achieve, but also warnings, which could generate possible errors, with effect on proper development and personal and social satisfaction.

Assumida como um recurso estratégico para a economia e sociedade do conhecimento, a educação doutoral tem-se tornado alvo de atenção e intervenção política, com efeitos visíveis na sua organização e ...oferta. Sob a influência de diversos atores, e especialmente na Europa, a educação doutoral tem-se expandido, quer em termos do número de universidades que a ofertam, quer no tocante ao número de programas; tornou-se mais diversificada, com programas doutorais nas mais diferentes áreas científicas e com diferentes tipos e propósitos; e tornou-se mais estruturada, com a inclusão de uma componente curricular e a redução do tempo para conclusão do grau. Muitas destas tendências de mudança são evidentes nas configurações assumidas pelo ensino doutoral em Portugal. Este artigo tem como objetivo contribuir para uma melhor compreensão dessas configurações, por meio do mapeamento do cenário atual da educação doutoral no país. A análise leva em consideração aspetos como a distribuição institucional, geográfica e científica dos programas doutorais, bem como a sua caraterização em termos de estruturação, duração e colaboração interinstitucional. Por último, as tendências observadas no cenário da educação doutoral são colocadas em perspetiva e apresentam-se recomendações com vistas à sua (re)organização, tendo como alvo os legisladores e as universidades.
Background This study evaluates the effectiveness and pedagogical integration of Virtual Reality (VR), exploring its application in various educational contexts. In this systematic literature review, ...the role of virtual reality in enhancing competency development within higher education is examined. Methods The search was conducted in two databases (Scopus and Web of Science) following the PRISMA method guidelines. Inclusion criteria were limited to studies that used virtual reality as a tool within the classroom, analyzing the competencies developed through its application. Results Out of the 1,671 articles retrieved, 61 full texts were selected for review, resulting in 27 academic articles published in the last five years. The findings highlight the capacity of virtual reality to foster interpersonal skills while simultaneously addressing the challenges of its integration. Discussion The adoption of Virtual Reality (VR) in higher education is notable for its immersive learning experiences. Despite VR’s significant contribution to education, its widespread integration faces challenges, including the high costs of VR technology and the lack of specialized educational software, which limits its accessibility across various academic disciplines. Conclusion The advent of global technological advancements has unveiled numerous opportunities within the educational sector, with VR emerging as a transformative technology that offers immersive learning experiences, propelling educational methodologies beyond traditional boundaries. Through this SLR, it becomes evident that the application of VR in education transcends mere knowledge transfer, facilitating the development of critical competencies. The present work describes a new model of pattern classification and its application to align instances from different ontologies, which are in turn related to e-learning educative content in a ...Knowledge Society context. In general, ontologies are the fundamental tool inherent to Semantic Web. In particular, the problem of ontology matching is modeled in this paper as a binary pattern classification problem. The original model presented here was validated through experiments, which were done on data taken from the OAEI (Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative) 2014 campaign, presented in the OWL (Web Ontology Language) format, as well as on data taken from two international repositories, ADRIADNE and MERLOT, in LOM (Learning Objects Metadata) format. The results obtained show a high precision measurement when compared against some of the best methods present in the state of the art.

The present paper aims to present the main theoretical and practical aspects of what ontology and knowledge bases mean, having the role of providing as precise information as possible. Ontologies are ...considered to be a vocabulary of concepts, and the purpose of this "vocabulary" is to ensure a semantically based level of knowledge based on semantics in order to define semantic ideas and relationships between them. Starting from this concept, it should be noted the idea of using the knowledge by a system that groups them into a knowledge base, which means representing the experience accumulated by human specialists in solving the problems in the field in question. This knowledge refers strictly to an ontology of the domain, to the rules used, but also to the restrictions that minimize the search space.
