This article examines the Biblical layer in Senj Korizmenjak, the only printed Glagolitic sermon collection, which is the Croatian translation of the Quaresimale volgare written by the famous Italian Franciscan preacher Roberto Caracciolo from Lecce. In contrast to some previous studies, where the interest was directed towards examining the degree of adaptation of the Biblical parts to the rest of the sermon text, the emphasis was placed on determining the varying degree of dependence of the quotations on pre-existing translations of the Biblical readings. The Biblical quotations are therefore compared with quotations from sources available at the time: from Croatian Glagolitic books (missals, breviaries, psalters), in which more than half of the Church Slavonic translation of the Holy Scriptures (Croatian Glagolitic Bible) is preserved, and from Chakavian Latin lectionaries. The aim of the work is to investigate whether the Croatian Church Slavonic elements are mainly the result of the translator's stylistic marking of the text (marking of a higher register) or a confirmation of recourse to liturgical models. By analysing the correlation between the Chakavian and Croatian Church Slavonic parts, conclusions will be drawn about the existence of a kind of translation concept of the intellectuals involved in the work of the Senj printing house at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Šimić je utvrdila grupiranje misala u tri skupine: stariju ( Vatikanski illirico 4 , Ročki , Ljubljanski (Beramski) prvi , Kopenhagenski , Ljubljanski (Beramski) drugi ), mlađu ( Hrvojev , Newyorški , Senjski ) i treću, prijelaznu ( Prvi oxfordski , Berlinski , Drugi oxfordski , Drugi vrbnički , Vatikanski Illirico 8 , Prvi vrbnički , Novakov , Prvotisak ).
Starting from the division of Croatian Glagolitic liturgical codices into northern and southern, i.e., older and younger groups established by M. A. Pantelić (1971) and J. L. Tandarić (1980), and based on research which has resulted in an emergence of a third, transitional group, in this paper we examine selected statistical methods and the extent to which they enable a clearer presentation and better understanding of the relationship between the texts of Croatian Glagolitic codices compared to the traditional approach. The material from the study into the language of the text of the Passion according to Matthew from 16 Croatian Glagolitic missals by M. Šimić (2000) was used as a corpus for the analysis in which the author identified phenomena relevant to linguistic analysis and presented data about these phenomena in individual missals. The author determined that the Missals can be grouped into older (Vatican Missal Illirico 4, Roč Missal, First Ljubljana (Beram) Missal, Copenhagen Missal, Second Ljubljana (Beram) Missal), younger (Hrvoje’s Missal, New York Missal, Senj Missal) and a third, transitional group consisting of the following eight missals: First Oxford Missal, Berlin Missal, Second Oxford Missal, Second Vrbnik Missal, Vatican Missal Illirico 8, First Vrbnik Missal, Novak's Missal and Editio Princeps. In the current research, statistical methods of segmentation analysis were performed on Šimić’s data. This included a set of statistical methods that try to quantitatively express the similarity of the analysed units with regard to characteristics significant for their mutual relationship, with the aim of setting hypotheses about the broader structure to which these units belong. The analysis presents how, with regard to the selected linguistic and textual features, the Missals are grouped and shows the relationships between these groups. The analysis has confirmed the division into groups observed when applying traditional methods, but also warned about some phenomena that had not been noticed before.
The Missal of Count Novak (1368) is the oldest dated missal according to the use of the Roman Court written in Glagolitic script and the Croatian Church Slavonic language. This missal has been subjected to scientific research by a group of Croatian and Austrian scientists due to its great value, arising from the fact it has survived in excellent condition since 1368, as well as the fact it was used as the template for the first Croatian printed missal. This paper presents the ground research of the Missal of Count Novak that is necessary for the TEI processing of the content of the current Missal so it could be accessible to the broader scientific and academic community. The scope of our research is the structure of the content of the Missal, its liturgical and textological ensemble that will be the subject of the further research. The first part of the research will provide an overview of the history and content of the first Roman-rite missal, and then of the Missal of Count Novak. It will then provide an insight into liturgical terminology, which will serve as the foundation for further digital research and analysis. This research establishes methodology for a modern approach to researching Glagolitic missals in the modern, digital humanities.
Background: Unani Medicine had its golden past in the middle age. Allopathic medicine evolved with simultaneous exploration of modern scientific development. Discovery of chemicals and antibiotics to ...deal infectious disease led foundation of epitome of modern medicine. There is however growing tendency among people to show their to depend on plant source and time old preparations. It is estimated that about 80 percent of population of the Asia and African countries uses herbal medicine for health care. This scenario opened the scope and merit to evaluate the preparation(s) which people are still using and the present study tested the usefulness and safety of ‘Sarbat Misali’ an Unani hematinic preparation in treating anemia.Materials and Methods: A total 31 women of age 24-40 yrs were enrolled in the study following ethical guidelines. The volunteers offered the choice and were free to refuse for not being included. Anthropometry recorded and blood sample obtained for biochemical test from the consenting subjects and prescribed with the preparation. Weight recorded and blood samples taken at the baseline end of four weeks. During study period they were in touch for their allegiance to taking the test preparation. Hemoglobin was estimated using autoanalyzer. Serum creatinine and SGPT were determined by standard biochemical method using autoanalyzer. Results: Blood hemoglobin level showed significant increase at the end of the supplementation (12.03±0.82) compared to the baseline level (10.78±1.08) (p<0.001). Serum creatinine and SGOT did not show any statistical difference between before and after supplementation. Conclusion: Data concluded that Sharbat Misali an Unani preparation of hematinics improved hemoglobin level and safety was supported by the fact of unaltered hepatic and renal functional status, however, to conclusively comment on adverse and toxic effect(s) chronic study needs to be undertaken with attention of inclusion of exhaustive biochemical markers.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.17(1) 2018 p.144-148
