Since April 2012, when the Japanese National Health Insurance began covering orthodontic treatment for oligodontia, interest in this treatment has increased among general dentists, guardians, and the ...patients themselves. Developmental problems not only affect jawbone growth in the present, but also affect future establishment of stable occlusion, midline alignment, and management of space for prostheses. We examined 31 patients with oligodontia (12 boys and 19 girls) who were between 7 y 1 m and 14 y 9 m of age at the initial examination (dental age IIIA‐IVA) to identify characteristic features in the patterns of missing teeth and craniofacial morphology. The maxillofacial morphology of patients with oligodontia during development suggested reductions in the mandibular plane angle and lower anterior facial height. We found that the maxillary anterior teeth and maxillary first molars were in a low vertical position, which conceivably affects overlap of the anterior teeth. (J Osaka Dent Univ 2021; 55: 263‐269)
Global developmental delay (GDD) is a chronic neurological disturbance that includes defects in one or more developmental domains. Although some diagnosed delays are benign, certain presentations are ...more worrisome. The developmental domains can be motor, cognitive, daily activities, speech or language, and social or personal development. The etiology of GDD can be prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal. It can be diagnosed early in childhood as the delay or absence of one or more developmental milestones. Hence the role of pediatric dentists and pediatricians becomes more crucial in identifying this condition.

This clinical study evaluated the long-term outcome and survival rate of all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) made of zirconia-ceramic with a single-retainer design to ...replace missing incisors. In addition, whether the reason for missing incisors has an influence on the longevity of RBFDPs was analyzed.
One hundred and eight zirconia ceramic cantilever RBFDPs were provided for 87 patients. Seventy-five RBFDPs replaced maxillary incisors and 33 mandibular incisors. The restorations were subsequently categorized into 3 groups according to the reasons for missing teeth (congenitally missing, trauma and other reasons). The patients were followed up annually, and the restorations were assessed for function and aesthetics. The mean observation time of the RBFDPs was 92.2±33months.
Six debondings and 1 loss of restoration were recorded. The lost restoration was removed at the patient’s request after a small chip occurred on the mesial edge of the pontic. Three of the 6 observed debondings were caused by traumatic incidents. All debonded RBFDPs were rebonded successfully with no further complications. Zirconia ceramic RBFDPs yielded a 10-year survival rate of 98.2% and a success rate of 92.0%.
Anterior zirconia ceramic cantilever RBFDPs provided excellent clinical longevity. The reasons for missing incisors did not influence the longevity of the cantilever RBFDPs.
The current studies have yielded inconclusive findings regarding the connection between periodontitis and oral cancer (OC). Therefore, our goal is to elucidate this relationship.
We conducted a ...thorough search of electronic databases (EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) up to September 2023. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was applied to assess study quality. To evaluate potential publication bias, both a funnel plot and Egger's test were employed. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the source of heterogeneity when the I2 statistic exceeded 50%.
This systematic review encompassed 16 studies, involving a total of 6,032 OC patients and 7,432 healthy controls. Our meta-analysis, incorporating data from nine studies, revealed a significant correlation between periodontitis and the risk of OC (OR odds ratio = 2.94, 95% CI confidence interval (2.13, 4.07); five studies, 6,927 participants; low certainty of evidence). Findings also suggested that individuals with more than 15 missing teeth may have a heightened risk of OC (OR = 1.91, 95% CI (1.01, 3.62)). Furthermore, clinical attachment loss (CAL) and decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) in OC patients were more pronounced compared to the control group (CAL, SMD = 1.94, 95% CI (0.22, 3.66); DMFT, SMD = 0.65, 95% CI (0.12, 1.18)).
Periodontitis may serve as a potential risk factor for OC. However, caution is warranted in interpreting these findings due to the substantial level of heterogeneity.
The rapid growth of the older adult population in the United States and their increased risk of edentulism make it essential to analyze trends and factors associated with edentulism.
Data were ...obtained from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 2012 through 2020. US- and state-level trend lines were reported. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between self-reported complete edentulism and demographic characteristics, chronic diseases, smoking status, and health insurance status. Multiple imputations were used to address the missing data.
A total of 771,513 (weighted n = 50,410,576) participants were included in the study. There was a significant (P = .021) downward trend in the prevalence of edentulism from 2012 (16.36%) through 2020 (13.54%). Having less than a high school education, being a smoker, being non-Hispanic Black, having an annual household income less than $75,000, and having chronic conditions, including diabetes, myocardial infarction, arthritis, depression, and stroke, were significantly associated with complete edentulism.
Despite a decrease in prevalence of edentulism, disparities based on race, income, and education still exist. Edentulism is associated with chronic diseases in older adults.
Public health initiatives should be aimed at reducing the impact of edentulism and improving overall quality of life among older adults. Community health programs allocating resources to improve access to affordable care, reducing precursors to edentulism, expanding dental coverage, and promoting oral and general health awareness are vital components of these efforts.
