Many theorists promote a decentralized politics but very few of them practice this decentralization textually. In this essay, I engage with three techniques Benjamin employs to decenter his authority ...in the text: allegory, montage and the production of text as "pure means." Taken together, these practices amount to what I am calling Benjamin's use of a "black flashlight." Rather than illuminate his text with his own knowledge, seeking to win the reader over by persuasion and textual authority, Benjamin seeks to obscure and complicate any meaning. He attempts to have his text fail to deliver a final verdict to the reader. The obscure, pitch black light Benjamin sheds on his own and other texts leaves us as readers to our own devices, deprived as we are of the usual guidance of the author. In this way, Benjamin not only encourages but requires the reader's own intervention, a model for the anarchist politics he also describes in the text.

The excerpt from Vous pouvez mentir (pp. 18-21) deals with the evolution of a radio program, which seamlessly slips from readers' mail to the interactive fiction series, while the host, named ..."Pseudo," participates with a certain carefree attitude.
The excerpt from Un roman du réseau (pp. 15-16) is devoted to the drift of the Odds site, which moves from dating site to collaborative fiction writing site, this at the cost of an unexpected reversal, because the Webmaster who proposed to his correspondents to write their "corrected biographies" becomes the subject of their stories: it is the life of the mad Master of this site that they begin to narrate in complete freedom.
The excerpt from Étreinte des fantômes (chapter "Offre de montage, par Lucques") shows the new Webmaster of the Odds site, Lucques, asking his correspondents to freely create an episode of his life, past and future: he offers his talents to edit the texts and videos they will send, and receives interesting answers, especially from the user who signs Ghostwriter. He must meet again a companion he was separated from by circumstances.
Lucques encounters Niels, his former lover who disappeared some fifteen years ago, "the phantom emerging from a dream outside of time" (Taquin, Étreinte; my translation). They meet at a hotel but ...cannot speak. To understand their past and their present desire, Lucques, a film editor and webmaster, invites the contributors of the private blog Odds to enlighten him, using text and video, about Niels' personal story.
Like an epistolary novel, Étreinte des fantômes is supposed to be written uniquely by the characters. They contribute using pseudonyms: Lucques, his psychoanalyst friend Ghostwriter, Nolan and Horatio, who seem well-acquainted with Niels, and five videographers... one of whom is Niels.
This networked structure, combined with the power of dreams and images, illuminates both familial and political emotions. The meaning emerges from the prism of viewpoints and the interweaving of imaginations. The (auto)biography of the couple is a "polybiography." Its tragedy is sublimated by a story that confronts the discontinuity of life through assemblage. The narrative voices speak through dreams and memories, texts, images, and sounds. The jump cuts call for interpretations. Caught up in the game, Ghostwriter herself reaches a deeper self-understanding, as all readers are invited to do by this text based on mise en abyme and self-reflection.
Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as
"antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive,
musicians play with and against one another to create art and
...community. In Antagonistic Cooperation , Robert G. O'Meally
shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African
American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and
aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of
Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni
Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington,
O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and
literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists
drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of
collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of
Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered
and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives
driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community.
O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how
they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history
and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken
promises of American democracy.
The time and space assembly line balancing problem (TSALBP) is a realistic multiobjective version of assembly line balancing industrial problems involving the joint optimization of conflicting ...criteria such as the cycle time, the number of stations, and the area of these stations. However, the existing problem formulation does not consider the industrial scenario where the demand of a set of mixed products is variable and uncertain. In this work we propose to introduce novel robustness functions to measure how robust the line configuration is when the production plans demand changes. These functions are based on the stations overload under future demand conditions and are used as additional a posteriori information for the non-dominated solutions found by any multiobjective optimization method. The values of the robustness functions are put together with a novel graphical representation to form a generic model that aims to offer a better picture of the robustness of the set of Pareto-optimal solutions.
Real data from the assembly line and production planning of the Nissan plant of Barcelona is considered for the experimentation. This information is also employed to develop a new TSALBP instance generator (NTIGen) that can generate problem instances having industrial real-like features. The use of the robustness information model is illustrated in an experimentation formed by a set of instances generated by NTIGen. Results show how the use of this robustness information model is necessary for the decision maker as it allows her/him to discriminate between different assembly line configurations when future demand conditions vary.
•Robustness measures are defined for ALB when mixed products demand is uncertain.•The robustness model comprises a visualization tool for Pareto-optimal solutions.•A TSALBP instance generator based on a Nissan case is also provided.•Experimentation shows robustness differences for the solutions of the instances.•The use of the robustness model easily helps to find robust Pareto front regions.
There is a growing interest in leveraging alternate sources of empirical data, with an increasing emphasis being placed on the Internet. This paper serves as a primer for supply chain management ...(SCM) researchers that may be interested in leveraging Internet‐based sources for their own research, but perhaps not familiar with how to begin. Here, definitions and concepts critical to successful implementation in practice are provided. In addition, concrete, discipline‐relevant examples accompany the discussion, and are aided by a fully detailed online code supplement. Performance enhancements are discussed, as well as associated caveats and limitations. Additionally, insights and guidance are offered on the unique responsibilities for researchers to uphold the ethical spirit of scientific research when continuing along these paths. Pragmatic issues related to the application of these techniques are presented for consideration of individual researchers and the SCM community as a whole.
•We propose a novel measuring system for mobile radar automated assembly.•The measuring system decomposes the measurement task in each assembly step.•A new vision based method is utilized to assist ...quick collimation over large space.•Laser meters and PSD sensor is used to precisely measure the position and orientation.•The measuring method taking into account the operation conditions and the environmental influences.
In this paper a new conception of a measuring method is proposed to assist precision automatic assembly of large radar antenna. Different from conventional 6-DOF tracking methods, the measuring system decomposes the measurement task into several independent steps. The measuring system consists of a camera, two laser distance meters, two position sensitive detectors (PSD) and an inclination angle sensor. The camera is adopted to guide antenna position and orientation adjustment over a large space. Laser meters and PSD sensor is used to precisely measure the position and orientation of radar antenna. To improve the practicability of measuring system, a robust vision measurement method is proposed. The mathematical models and practical calibration methods for measurement are elaborated. The preliminary experimental results agree with the methods currently being used for orientation and position measurement. The measuring method provides an alternative choice for the metrology in precision assembly. By using the method proposed in this paper, the measuring system can achieve a measurement accuracy of approximately 1mm, which meets the accuracy requirement of large radar antenna automatic assembly application. Besides, the measuring method provides an alternative solution for large scale metrology which take the environmental impact into account.
We used numerical methods to define the normative structure of resting-state EEG (rsEEG) in a pilot study of 37 healthy subjects (10-74 years old), using a double-banana bipolar montage. ...Artifact-free 120-200 s epoch lengths were visually identified and divided into 1 s windows with a 10% overlap. Differential channels were grouped by frontal, parieto-occipital, and temporal lobes. For every channel, the power spectrum was calculated and used to compute the area for delta (0-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), and beta (13-30 Hz) bands and was log-transformed. Furthermore, Shannon's spectral entropy (SSE) and coherence by bands were computed. Finally, we also calculated the main frequency and amplitude of the posterior dominant rhythm. According to the age-dependent distribution of the bands, we divided the patients in the following three groups: younger than 20; between 21 and 50; and older than 51 years old. The distribution of bands and coherence was different for the three groups depending on the brain lobes. We described the normative equations for the three age groups and for every brain lobe. We showed the feasibility of a normative structure of rsEEG picked up with a double-banana montage.
