L’Uganda Palaeontology Expedition a recueilli en 1999 dans un dépôt de chenal à Napak I, Karamoja (Ouganda), près de 150 restes de deux squelettes d’un petit rhinocéros Iranotheriinae associés à ...d’autres mammifères et à des gastéropodes. L’ensemble faunique est caractéristique de l’association P1 d’Afrique orientale, datée par biochronologie et par les radio-isotopes aux environs de 19–20 Ma. Le nouveau rhinocéros, dépourvu de corne, est de petite taille. Les os des membres sont fins et élancés, notamment les métapodes, et traduisent un type coureur. Les jugales supérieures hypsodontes ont des fossettes remplies de cément et présentent une muraille externe ondulée et un émail plissé ; les prémolaires supérieures présentent une muraille linguale. Il s’agit donc d’un Iranotheriinae, le plus ancien connu en Afrique, proche du plus vieux genre de la sous-famille, récemment découvert à Bugti au Pakistan, dans un site d’âge comparable.
Ougandatherium napakense nov. gen. nov. sp., the earliest Rhinocerotidae Iranotheriinae from Africa.
The Uganda Palaeontology Expedition discovered an exceptionally rich fossiliferous channel deposit at Napak I, Karamoja, in 1999, which yielded two partial skeletons of a new genus and species of early Miocene Rhinocerotidae, together with various other mammals and gastropods typical of Faunal Set I of East Africa. The age of the deposits on the basis of both faunal correlation (biochronology) and radio-isotopic dating is ca 19–20 Ma. The new genus and species is a hornless rhinoceros about the size of a small horse, with long slender limb bones and metapodials and hypsodont upper cheek teeth whose enamel is undulate, and fossettes cement-filled. Upper premolars possess an inner wall; this is clearly an iranotheriine morphology. As such it is the earliest known African member of this subfamily, close to the oldest member of the subfamily recently discovered at Bugti in Pakistan, a site whose age is about the same.
During reorganisation of the palaeontology collections at the Department of Antiquities and Museums, Kampala by the Uganda Palaeontology Expedition, several primate postcranial remains from Napak, an ...Early Miocene site, were found. Several large limb bones are attributed to
Proconsul major, already known, already known from the locality on the basis of dental and gnathic remains, but hitherto poorly known postcranially. One specimen belongs to a smaller species of hominoid not represented at Napak by teeth and jaws. Both hominoids show quadrupedal and climbing adaptations, but they differ from each other. Thus
Proconsul major praticed ‘power’ climbing whereas the smaller hominoid would have been more ‘agile’. In both cases, the hominoids moved frequently between the trees and the ground, and both were well adapted to their palaeoenvironment, which was dry forest. A further important result of this study is that the postcranial remains of
r indicat indicate that it was heavier than had previously been envisaged on the basis of its dental remains. It would have weighed about the same as female gorillas, between 75 and 90 kg. The small species weighed about 20 kg.
Lors d'un réaménagement des anciennes collections paléontologiques de l'Uganda Museum, des restes postcrâniens de primate provenant du site Miocène inférieur de Napak ont été retrouvés. Certaines pièces de grandes dimensions sont attribuées à
Proconsul major, déjà signalé sur le site à partir de restes dentaires et gnathiques, mais dont l'anatomie postcrânienne était mal connue. D'autres spécimens sont rapportés à un Hominoidea de plus petite taille et non représenté par des dents ou des mâchoires. Les deux hominoïdes montrent des caractéristiques de quadrupèdes pratiquant le grimper mais de façons différentes. Alors que
r pratique un gr pratique un grimper puissant, l'Hominoidea de petite taille pratique un grimper plus agile. Quoi qu'il en soit, ces deux espèces se déplaçaient souvent et activement au sol et dans les arbres. Ils vivaient dans une forêt sèche. Cette étude confirme que
r, Hominoidea de, Hominoidea de grande taille, avait une masse corporelle plus importante que celle envisagée auparavant à partir des mesures dentaires. Il devait avoir une masse équivalente à celle d'un gorille femelle et peser entre 75 et 90 kg. L'espèce plus petite, quant à elle, aurait pesé 20 à 25 kg environ.
It has been known for a long time that the dentition of
P. major differs in several features from those of
P. africanus (the type species of the genus) and
P. nyanzae (including
P. heseloni). Newly ...discovered postcranial bones from Napak assigned to
Proconsul major differ markedly from those assigned to
Proconsul species from the Kenyan sites of Koru, Songhor, Mfwangano and Rusinga and reveal that the species concerned differs from
Proconsul at least at the generic level. We accordingly erect a new genus,
Ugandapithecus, for the species

18. A few of the dental and postcranial remains from Moroto, Uganda, are indistinguishable from those from Napak
U. major, whereas others, including the Moroto palate (the holotype of
Morotopithecus bishopi) and much of a femur attributed to the latter species differ markedly from it. Thus at Moroto there are two genera of large bodied hominoids. It is not known to which of the genera the Moroto vertebral remains pertain, but they probably belong to
U. major.
On sait depuis longtemps que la dentition de
P. major s’isole par plusieurs caractères de celles de
P. africanus (l’espèce-type du genre) et de
P. nyanzae (y compris
P. heseloni). Des restes postcrâniens découverts récemment à Napak présentent des caractères différents de ceux des espèces de
Proconsul provenant de Koru, Songhor, Mfwangano et Rusinga. Ces données suggèrent que l’espèce concernée est différente de
Proconsul, au moins au niveau générique ; nous érigeons un nouveau genre,
Ugandapithecus, pour l’espèce

18. Quelques restes dentaires et postcrâniens de Moroto en Ouganda ne se distinguent pas de ceux de Napak attribués à
U. major. En revanche, d’autres, dont le palais de Moroto (qui constitue l’holotype de
Morotopithecus bishopi) et un des fémurs s’en isolent fortement. Deux formes de grands singes de grande taille seraient donc présentes à Moroto. Les restes vertébraux récoltés dans les années 60 étaient rattachés à
Morotopithecus
13, mais on peut suggérer aujourd’hui qu’ils appartiennent à la plus grande forme d’hominoïde,
Ugandapithecus major.
