This volume is dedicated to the professional re-entry of teachers with a refugee background into the teaching profession. The book presents the certificate course "Educational Science Basics for ...Teachers with a Refugee Background" at the University of Vienna and research results on it in detail. Furthermore, the teachers and participants reflect on their experiences with this measure. Challenges and synergies in connection with the implementation of such a course are discussed as well as international perspectives on the requalification of refugee teachers.
The role of the Health Care Assistant emerged primarily to support the professional nurse and to undertake perceived ‘non‐nursing’ duties under the direction and supervision of qualified nurses. ...Health Care Assistants are employed in a variety of clinical settings and carry out a range of tasks and procedures. While they represent a substantial proportion of the health care workforce, the growth of their role has taken place without regulation, clear boundaries, or systematic education and training. This has raised serious concerns, especially with regard to the issues of patient safety and quality of care. For health professionals, regulations, role clarity and validated education and training are key elements of ensuring the safety of the public. This paper explores these issues with regard to the Health Care Assistant role and finds them wanting.
Background: Medical decision making is based on patient autonomy and informed consent, which is an integral part of medical ethics, risk management and clinical governance. Consent to treatment has ...been extensively discussed, but the viewpoint of patients is not well represented. A new consent form was introduced by the Department of Health in 2001. Aims: To determine the information most important to patients, to facilitate evidence-based guidelines and to provide a valid and reliable consent-procedure-satisfaction questionnaire. Methods: An anonymous quantitative survey was carried out, asking 100 patients 15 questions regarding procedures they may need to undergo, using a Visual Analogue Scale to test the importance of each question. Results and discussion: In total there were 77 respondents and the mean age was 48.8 (SD 17.63, range 20–82) years. There were 52% women and 48% men. Major complications, such as not undergoing the procedure, future management and long-term effect on work, all scored a median of 95%. Least concerns were related to technical details of the procedure and minor complications (median 64% and 63%, respectively). All other questions were still considered important (median 79–93%). No significant differences were observed between sex, age and professional groups, but a significant difference was observed between the education groups. Qualifications of the doctor did not correlate to any other question. Conclusions: This questionnaire is proposed as a basis for informed consent guidelines to health workers and for measures of satisfaction with the consent procedure.
The use of refrigeration, either directly or as part of an air-conditioning system, is essential to almost every branch of industry. There is a need for practitioners to familiarise themselves with ...the general principles and methods of refrigeration and air conditioning, and the types of plant and operation currently in use. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of refrigeration and air- conditioning for the uninitiated student and a general overview of the industry for the practitioner. The fundamentals of the subject are introduced without involving the reader too deeply in theory and the content is presented in a logical order. This fully revised and updated third edition has a new chapter on Refrigerants that deals with the many changes in this area over the last 10 years, including the phase out of CFC and HCFC refrigerants in line with Ozone depletion and Global Warming. New, replacement refrigerants are described, together with Codes of Practice introduced for maintenance and servicing of refrigeration plants. The increased use of Ammonia and Propane are included, with the relevant Health and Safety aspects, and the move towards Absorption refrigeration equipment as more environmentally friendly. This new edition of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is a valuable reference source for practising engineers and essential reading for students.
This study provides an evaluation of a training programme designed for developing six critical care assistants to work alongside registered nurses to care for patients within the critical care ...environment. The programme was run as a pilot funded from the Department of Health's ‘critical care bid’. At 18 months long, the programme incorporated a foundation programme, and National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level 3 in care and adapted Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) NVQ units. Six critical care assistants successfully completed the programme; however, they all then left the unit to undertake further study for pre‐registration nursing qualifications. Upon evaluation, a number of key issues were identified. Clear definition of the critical care assistants's role is essential as are dedicated practice development staff, who focus purely on developing the critical care assistant role. More importantly, however, with such key changes in the staffing structure within critical care units, appropriate change management techniques should be employed, ensuring that all staff contributing to the training and development are fully involved from the start.

Emerging Challenges and Trends in TVET in the Asia-Pacific Region
Book Chapter
Sri Lanka’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system has evolved over a period of 100 years. It is officially recorded that technical education in Sri Lanka was initiated in the ...year 1893. The specific event was the establishment of the very first technical training institute by the government. From then on, TVET has developed into its present state. It is now estimated that there are more than 5,000 training institutes in Sri Lanka which include government, private and nongovernmental organizations. Even today, the government plays a key role in providing training and education in the TVET sector through a number of government departments and authorities.
