A review of the nursing records of 60 patients undergoing ...abdominal surgery. Three checklists developed by the researchers were used to document nursing diagnoses made, interventions specified, and outcomes selected.
Pain was the most frequent diagnosis, "pain management" the most frequent intervention, and Pain Level the most frequent outcome. Further study is needed with various samples and settings.
Most of the suggested NIC-NANDA interventions and NOC-NANDA outcomes listed in NANDA Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions and Classification, 1999-2000, were used in this study, but some additional interventions and outcomes should be considered for inclusion.

Leaders and educators from many facilities are struggling to understand what is expected of them, relative to competence assessment, by the joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare ...Organizations (JCAHO). Some have responded to the standards with the creation of a large number of checklists and annual skills fairs, along with a fragmented competence assurance system--all delegated to the staff development department. This article discusses such approaches, reviews JCAHO requirements, and suggests alternative strategies, including the use of the Nursing Interventions Classification.

PURPOSE. To synthesize the methods, rules and issues described in two studies that mapped nonstandardized nursing orderslinterventions into the Nursing Interventions ...Classification (NIC).

CONCLUSIONS. Results indicate that the NIC is an effective classification of mapping nursing orders/interventions to support across‐site comparisons of nursing treatments. A set of decision rules to support mapping of interventions to the NIC is outlined.

PURPOSE. To investigate the feasibility of mapping nonstandardized nursing interventions into standardized language using the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC).
SOURCE. Data from a Midwest community hospital's Computerized information system.
CONCLUSIONS. Results demonstrate that nonstandardized nursing orders can be mapped into standardized language using the NIC.
PURPOSE. To develop an innovative method of teaching baccalaureate nursing students to plan for and recognize outcomes to specific nursing interventions.
METHODS. A case study design that measured ...the effectiveness of a teaching innovation. Tools for students (N = 8) to use during clinical practice included an Intervention‐Outcome Analysis Tool and a Nursing Clinical Outcomes Tool.
FINDINGS. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation data were presented that showed growth in the ability to set and meet patient outcomes during the semester.
CONCLUSIONS. Thinking in terms of outcomes moved students beyond problem solving in their clinical thinking and assisted them to learn to develop individualized outcome statements for their patients.
Vascular access infection is a common cause of the loss of a vascular access. Education of both nursing staff and patients is essential for preventing vascular access infections and for treating ...infections early. The use of strict aseptic technique is essential when providing vascular access care. Central venous catheters require special assessment and care. Dialysis staff can have a critical role in prevention and early treatment of vascular access infections.
