Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become one of the most popular application of the daily life of users in the worldwide. Today the number of Social Media users is about 3 billion, and this trend ...increases year per year with high impact on the privacy issue. During the last years, decentralization of social services has been considered a big opportunity to overcome the main issues in OSNs. Blockchain technology represents today the most well known decentralized technique, which has been taken into account to develop the new generation of decentralized social platforms. Nevertheless, the real benefit of the introduction of blockchain technology in real social platforms is still unknown. In this paper we propose an overview of the main Blockchain-based Online Social Media platforms. We describe in detail these platforms by highlighting the main features and services they offer, but also the common drawbacks of these platforms. Finally, we propose a new model of Blockchain-based Online Social Network, which takes into account the role of the user as the center of the system, instead of the role of the content as in current proposals.
Online social networks (OSN) are a permanent presence in today’s personal and professional lives of a huge segment of the population, with direct consequences to offline activities. Built on a ...foundation of trust – users connect to other users with common interests or overlapping personal trajectories – online social networks and the associated applications extract an unprecedented volume of personal information. Unsurprisingly, serious privacy and security risks emerged, positioning themselves along two main types of attacks: attacks that exploit the implicit trust embedded in declared social relationships; and attacks that harvest user’s personal information for ill-intended use. This article provides an overview of the privacy and security issues that emerged so far in OSNs. We introduce a taxonomy of privacy and security attacks in OSNs, we overview existing solutions to mitigate those attacks, and outline challenges still to overcome.
The rise of far-right communities on digital platforms is a global crisis. Digital Islamophobia tracks far-right groups where they are a virtual and vicious threat, exploring how these networks grow, ...develop, and circulate Islamophobic hate-speech on Twitter. Reconstructing this media ecosystem, Digital Islamophobia traces the reactionary political ideologies animating these groups through feminist data analytic techniques in a transnational study of German and American far-right, digitally networked users. This work illustrates far-right communities using data visualization techniques, identifies a taxonomy of user-types, analyzes themes and stories that motivate far-right users, and tracks the spread of linked forms of anti-Muslim sentiment, reactionary ideologies, and (mis)information. In doing so, Digital Islamophobia details how far-right discourse is not merely national, or even transatlantic, but increasingly transnationalized among American, German, as well as Indian and Nigerian digital networks. By tracking and tracing the contours of these far-right digital communities on Twitter and analyzing the content of their conversations, Digital Islamophobia provides policy-makers, researchers, and scholars with a potential road-map to stop them.
Identifying accounts across different online social networks that belong to the same user has attracted extensive attentions. However, existing techniques rely on given user seeds and ignore the ...dynamic changes of online social networks, which fails to generate high quality identification results. In order to solve this problem, we propose an incremental user identification method based on user-guider similarity index (called CURIOUS), which efficiently identifies users and well captures the changes of user features over time. Specifically, we first construct a novel user-guider similarity index (called USI) to speed up the matching between users. Second we propose a two-phase user identification strategy consisting of USIbased bidirectional user matching and seed-based user matching, which is effective even for incomplete networks. Finally, we propose incremental maintenance for both USI and the identification results, which dynamically captures the instant states of social networks. We conduct experimental studies based on three real-world social networks. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of our proposed method in comparison with traditional methods. Compared with the traditional methods, our method improves precision, recall and rank score by an average of 0.19, 0.16 and 0.09 respectively, and reduces the time cost by an average of 81%. This volume explores the relationship between new media and religion, focusing on the digital era's impact on the Russian Orthodox Church. A believer may now enter a virtual chapel, light a candle ...through drag-and-drop, send an online prayer request, or worship virtual icons and relics. In recent years, however, Church leaders and public figures have become increasingly skeptical about new media. The internet, some of them argue, breaches Russia's "spiritual sovereignty" and implants values and ideas alien to Russian culture. This collection examines how Orthodox ecclesiology has been influenced by its new digital environment, such as the intersection of virtual religious life with religious experience in the "real" church, the role of clerics on the Russian Web, and the transformation of the Orthodox notion of sobornost' (catholicity), asking whether and how Orthodox activity on the internet can be counted as authentic religious practice.
