En el presente trabajo se evaluaron las actividades antimicrobianas de extractos etanólicos y hexánicos de nueve especies de macroalgas marinas recolectadas en la zona intermareal de la playa San ...Francisco, Ancón, de Lima, Perú. La evaluación se realizó in vitro frente a un panel de bacterias estándar Gram positivas (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 y Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 51922) y Gram negativas (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 y Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028). Los extractos etanólicos fueron de mayor rendimiento (67%) en comparación a los hexánicos (33%), en especial frente a los Gram positivos, siendo el extracto obtenido de Ulva enteromorpha var. intestinalis y U. nematoidea los más activos frente a S. aureus ATCC 6538 (74.1 y 78.2 % de inhibición, respectivamente). Los extractos etanólicos de Cladophora sp y U. nematoidea frente a B. subtilis ATCC 6633 presentaron inhibiciones entre moderada y baja (52.5 y 33%, respectivamente). Los extractos etanólicos de U. enteromorpha y Cladophora sp frente a S. Typhimurium presentaron solo 40% de inhibición. El extracto etanólico de Cladophora sp fue el único que presentó actividad antimicrobiana frente a las cinco cepas bacterianas y fue elegida para determinar la Concentración Mínima Inhibitoria (CMI), que resultó en 12.5 y 25 mg/ml frente a B. subtilis ATCC 6633 y S. aureus ATCC 6538, respectivamente. Se concluye que, la mayoría de las macroalgas estudiadas contienen compuestos inhibitorios, cuyos extractos etanólico y hexánico son capaces de inhibir el crecimiento de bacterias patógenas.

Bioassay-guided fractionation revealed that the ethyl acetate sub-fraction of ANE (EAA) had the majority of stress alleviating, bioactive components. Microarray analysis showed that EAA elicited substantial changes in the global transcriptome on day 1 and day 5, after treatment. On day one, 184 genes were up-regulated while this number increased to 257 genes on day 5. On the other hand, 91 and 262 genes were down-regulated on day 1 and day 5, respectively. On day 1, 2.2% of the genes altered were abiotic stress regulated and this increased to 6% on day 5. EAA modulate the expression of number of the genes involved in stress responses, carbohydrate metabolism, and phenylpropanoid metabolism. In vitro screening of organic solvent extracts of green algae
C. humicola shows activity in inhibiting the growth of virulent strains of bacteria and fungi pathogenic to human. Eight different extracts showed effective inhibitory action against the selected pathogens. Depends upon their existence of the bioactive compounds the different organic algal extracts shows difference in their inhibitory zone against the microbes. Out of all the organic extracts benzene and ethyl acetate extracts showed excellent effect nearly 80% microbial growth inhibition. The separated carotenoid and chlorophyll fractions of
C. humicola, also results in the microbial growth inhibition.
The present study concludes that green algae
C. humicola are a rich and varied source of pharmacologically active natural products and nutraceuticals. While nutraceutical and pharmaceutical content in the baseline algae strain is very small, they showed excellent effect against the microbial pathogens.

Cupressus sempervirens L. is largely used in traditional medicine as an antimicrobial agent. The present study investigated the antioxidant, antibacterial and antileishmanial activities of C. sempervirens organic extracts at different phenological stages. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylradical) scavenging assay, ferric reducing power and total antioxidant capacity. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against five clinical strains by disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The antileishmanial activity was determined against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania (L.) infantum and L. major. Results of antioxidant activity showed that methanolic extract from vegetative stage had the most important activity. The ethyl acetate extract of C. sempervirens from flowering stage was the most active against Bacillus cereus (ATCC 14579) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) with MIC of 100 μg/mL and 50 μg/mL, respectively. Interestingly, this extract exhibited high antileishmanial activity against promastigote form of L. infantum and L. major (IC50 = 1.47 and 2.8 μg/mL, respectively) and amastigote form (IC50 = 3.61 and 5.42 μg/mL, respectively). Furthermore, ethyl acetate extract showed low cytotoxicity on macrophage cells Raw264.7 with selectivity index of 34.15 and 17.93 for L. infantum and L. major, respectively. The identification by HPLC and HPLC-MSn of active extracts of C. sempervirens revealed that major compounds of methanolic extract from vegetative stage and ethyl acetate extract from flowering stage were cupressuflavone and amentoflavone. Based on these results, C. sempervirens extracts could be used as an alternative to chemical drugs for the treatment of oxidative stress and infectious diseases.
Epidemiologic studies have reported that particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) affect respiratory diseases, including asthma. The components and/or factors of PM2.5 that ...contribute to the exacerbation of asthma have not been identified. We investigated the effects of extracts of PM2.5 collected in Japan on the respiratory and immune systems. PM2.5 was collected from an industrial area and an urban area in December 2013. Airway epithelial cells and immune cells were exposed to aqueous or organic extracts of PM2.5. Exposure to extracts from both areas, especially to organic extracts rather than aqueous extracts, caused a pro-inflammatory response via interleukin (IL) 6 production from airway epithelial cells, and it induced the maturation/activation of bone marrow–derived antigen-presenting cells via dendritic and epithelial cell (DEC) 205 and cluster of differentiation (CD) 86 expression and proportional changes in the constitution of the splenocytes. The extracts collected from the industrial area tended to show greater effects than those from the urban area. These results suggest that organic components of PM2.5 affect the respiratory and immune systems. These effects can differ by the collection areas. In addition, IL-6, DEC205, and CD86 can be predictive biomarkers for the respiratory and immune effects of ambient PM2.5.
Medicinal plants have several therapeutic properties; they have been used for a long time to treat different diseases. Lantana camara L. has been widely used by man for healing these diseases. In ...this study, four leaves extracts of L. camara were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening to determine the presence and/or the absence of phytochemical constituents; In addition, they were tested for hemolytic activity on human erythrocytes. This activity is performed using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer method at 520 nm and at five different concentrations (125 µg/ml, 250 µg/ml, 500 µg/ml, 750 µg/ml, and 1000 µg/ml). The phytochemical screening showed the presence of various phytochemical groups such as phenolic compounds, saponins, sterols, tannins, flavonoids, reducing compounds and the absence of alkaloids in the four extracts. These same extracts showed average hemolytic activity sequentially: chloroformic extract, petroleum ether extract, aqueous extract and then methanolic extract. This activity is dependent on the concentration of the extract.

Ethanol extract showed high polyphenol content and diethyl ether extract exhibited high DPPH scavenging and low beta-carotene bleaching activity (IC50 = 13.04 ± 0.99 and 200.18 ± 3.32 μg mL-1, respectively). However, diethyl ether extract displayed high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive strains including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 31.25 μg mL-1), Staph. aureus ATCC6538 (MIC = 62.5 μg mL-1), and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 (MIC = 125 μg mL-1), as well as high antileishmanial activity against the promastigote forms of L. infantum and L. major (IC50 = 11.45 and 14.53 μg mL-1, respectively). The active compound was purified using bioassay-guided fractionation and thin layer chromatography, and identified as ursolic acid using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a photodiode array and mass spectrometry. The purified compound was strongly inhibitory against the promastigote and amastigote forms of L. infantum and L. major (IC50 = 5.87 and 6.95 μg mL-1 versus 9.56 and 10. 68 μg mL-1, respectively) without overt cytotoxicity against Raw 264.7 macrophage cells (SI = 13.53 and 11.43, respectively). The commercial compound (ursolic acid) showed similar activity against amastigotes and promastigotes forms of L. infantum and L. major. Moreover, its molecular mode of action against leishmaniasis seems to involve the expression of the ODC and SPS genes involved in thiol pathway.
Extracts of M. nervosa can be considered as a potential alternative to antimicrobial and antileishmanial drugs.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of aqueous, ethanolic and ethyl acetate extracts from neem leaves on growth of some human pathogens (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, ...Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus terreus, Candida albicans and Microsporum gypseum) in vitro. Different concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20%) prepared from these extracts inhibited the growth of the test pathogens and the effect gradually increased with concentration. The 20% ethyl acetate extract gave the strongest inhibition compared with the activity obtained by the same concentration of the other extracts. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis of ethyl acetate extract showed the presence of a main component (nimonol) which was purified and chemically confirmed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analysis. The 20% ethyl acetate extract lost a part of its antifungal effect after pooling out the nimonol and this loss in activity was variable on test pathogens. The purified nimonol as a separate compound did not show any antifungal activity when assayed against all the six fungal pathogens. PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
A field experiment was carried out during agricultural season 2011/2012 to study the effect of sulfur addition with some organic fertilizers on plant growth and the yield of garlic Allium sativum L. ...which has been got as cloves from local markets. Experiment was conducted according to the randomized complete block designe withing factorial experiments by three replicates. Using Duncan test polynomial on possibility of 5% to compare averages of treatments, Eighteent sulfur addition was applied levels of zero and 1000 kg.ha-1 and poultry manures of 10 and 20 tons.ha-1. Some fertilizers and organic extracts such as Italpollin in levels 1 and 2 tons.ha-1. Afoiler organic extracts were applied on levels 2.5 and 5 ml.liter-1.
