This collection provides an in-depth and up-to-date examination of the concept of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the issues surrounding its value to society. Critically engaging with the UNESCO ...2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage , the book also discusses local-level conceptualizations of living cultural traditions, practices and expressions, and reflects on the efforts that seek to safeguard them. Exploring a global range of case studies, the book considers the diverse perspectives currently involved with intangible cultural heritage and presents a rich picture of the geographic, socioeconomic and political contexts impacting research in this area. With contributions from established and emerging scholars, public servants, professionals, students and community members, this volume is also deeply enhanced by an interdisciplinary approach which draws on the theories and practices of heritage and museum studies, anthropology, folklore studies, ethnomusicology, and the study of cultural policy and related law. The Routledge Companion to Intangible Cultural Heritage undoubtedly broadens the international heritage discourse and is an invaluable learning tool for instructors, students and practitioners in the field.

The conservation risks associated with climate change to which heritage is subjected represent one of the most significant issues arising from the adoption of the 1972 World Heritage Convention. The ...Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of World Heritage Listed sites and the conditions of integrity and authenticity, which were essential requirements at the time of their nomination and inscription, may be compromised or no longer be met over time as a result of the effects of climate action on heritage assets. While the value of sustainability has assumed a predominant role in the multiple social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts and is in affinity with many of the theoretical premises within the discipline of restoration, this study aims to reflect on some of the systemic principles and parameters through which a restoration product can be defined as sustainable, considering the material authenticity and uniqueness of World Heritage architectural artefacts, and the spatial-temporal implications related to the conservation of cultural heritage.
LIPU is a non-profit association founded in the 1960s committed to the conservation of nature, the protection of biodiversity and the promotion of ecological culture in Italy. This paper traces the ...events that marked its history, investigating the aims, initiatives and results achieved. A specific case study is then addressed, that of the Centro Habitat Mediterraneo in Ostia, which is a virtuous example of the recovery and enhancement of a previously abandoned area, now transformed into a place where environment and culture interact in a particularly dynamic reality with marked connotations of social inclusiveness.
Strategies and Policies for Relaunching Depopulated Small Towns in Inner Areas. A Human Scale Perspective The topic of abandonment has become more topical than ever in the last few months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, newspapers and blogs have been dedicating at least one article or editorial per day to the incredible rediscovery of how sustainable and liveable lockdown has been in hamlets and small towns in inner areas rather than in big cities. Thus, it seems that after years of unheard appeals from small local communities at risk of disappearing, rather than being a problem, small towns are now becoming important resources. Starting from the topics and issues proposed during the International Conference One needs a town. Studies and perspectives for abandoned or depopulated small towns, held in Reggio Calabria in 2018, the essay focuses on the concrete perspectives for the repopulation of small towns in inner areas. The perspective, which recalls the approach of the Conference, implies a more dynamic idea of repopulation, which involves the economic and social regeneration of these territories. Moreover, the purpose is also to verify if and how the enhancement of cultural heritage might play a significant role in hindering depopulation. In other words, the aim is to reflects on how culture may play a part within the broader economic and social strategies for the repopulation of marginal areas, including cultural heritage, which is the focus of the essay.
The research deepens the role of new technologies in the construction of geographical imaginaries investigating the dimension of the offer related to the cultural heritage of the city of Palermo. The ...study was conducted using qualitative methods and provided for the application of two research techniques: participant observation and semi-structured interviews. By interpreting the results produced, the contribution aims to highlight the predominance of an urban image, linked to the UNESCO inclusion of the site in the World Heritage List, which is conveyed through new technologies. Developing a reflection on the alternative capacity of new media to dislocate and challenge shared images, the study will also examine the role of technologies in the production of imaginative counter-geographies.
Constantinos Doxiadis devoted most of his life to urban and regional planning. His work was globalized, futuristic and extraordinarily ambitious, yet he was fascinated by local contexts, history, and ...ancient civilizations. The Doxiadis Associates, the Athens-based international consulting firm that he founded in the mid-1950’s, completed projects in over 40 countries. His Ekistics movement had associates throughout the world and he attracted thousands of students and conference participants to Greece. After a four-year illness, he died a year before the first United Nations Habitat Conference, held in Vancouver in Summer 1976, yet he capped his prolific publication record with four books for presentation at the conference.
