The article delves into the psychological aspects of self-development, focusing on the strategies and factors influencing effective personal growth. The study's significance arises from the ...recognition that individuals, at a specific juncture in their lives, become conscious of their individuality and subsequently endeavor to present themselves favorably to others while pursuing their life's purpose. Moreover, the concept of personal growth has become prevalent in contemporary society, with influential figures advocating the idea that self-development is an essential objective for every individual, as significant success cannot be attained without it. The present study establishes the significance of the psychology of self-development concerning strategies and factors influencing effective personal growth. The essence of the "self-development" concept has been thoroughly examined, and the primary aspects of human self-development have been delineated. Moreover, this work provides comprehensive characterizations and detailed descriptions of various forms of human self-development, including self-affirmation, self-actualization, and self-improvement. The article elucidates the particularities of self-development strategies in individuals, including imitation, the "twist of fate," and purposeful movement towards desired goals. Furthermore, the work describes psychological barriers that impede an individual's self-development. The study characterizes factors that positively influence personal growth, encompassing empathic support, appropriate upbringing, clear goal awareness, developed self-organization, interpersonal interaction, a drive for self-realization, and a creative approach. Moreover, the article identifies scenarios wherein self-development assumes a negative aspect, leading to regression rather than progress.
This volume argues that relational realism can help us to make better educational policy that is more effective in practice. Basem Adi draws on critical realism to thoroughly re-examine fundamental ...assumptions about how government policymaking works, developing an ontological basis from which to examine existing government approaches and imagine an alternative approach based on a relational realist-informed critical pedagogy. Adi casts familiar issues in a new light by drawing on a less familiar theoretical and meta-theoretical tradition, offering a critique that can be productively engaged with by many educational organizations to tackle the issues they face. A Relational Realist Vision for Education Policy and Practice will be of great interest to academics of sociology, critical realism, sociological theory and education, as well as policymakers and educators seeking a theoretical perspective on their work.
Responding to an ‘educational emergency’ generated largely by the difficulties of implementing education reforms, this book compares education policies around the world in order to understand what ...works where. To address the key question of why education reforms are so difficult, the authors take into account a broad range of relevant factors, such as governance, ideology, and stakeholder conflicts of interest, and their interactions with one another. Drawing on their experiences as policymakers in the Spanish government and as governmental advisors worldwide, Montserrat Gomendio and Jose Ignacio Wert produce a publication like no other, shifting the usual Eurocentric narrative and shedding light on frequently overlooked educational policies from elsewhere. In this context, they dive deeper into details of educational failures and successes, the processes of implementation and investment priorities in different countries. They provide revealing accounts of stakeholder conflicts of interest and the challenges of implementing educational reform during a financial crisis. The authors also investigate why the evidence from international large-scale assessments (ILSAs) has, contrary to expectation, not generated improvements in most education systems. Gomendio and Wert investigate the evolution of different education systems, closely examining their advances or declines. Gomendio and Wert’s expert voices illuminate the current state of global education systems and the necessary changes to ensure long-awaited improvements. This is a revelatory and informative resource for policymakers, teachers and academics alike.
The student life experience – a term dating back to the 1970’s – has gained traction in academic research over the last fifteen years. Concurrent with this topical interest a specific class of ...experts has come to the higher education stage. They occupy a ‘third space’ between academia and administration. With this volume the authors give substance to their professional roles by bridging the academic disciplines of sociology, education and design sciences, and the academic and administrative functions of training and supporting students. They bring to the table diverse perspectives and expertise that spans more than forty years of combined experience in Flemish higher education. This shared effort results from the need for collaboration, innovation, and a holistic approach in order to address the complex challenges in higher education, and specifically in the field of student affairs and services (SAS).

With a Fulbright Scholar Award, and the collaboration of the University Federico II and the Assessorato alle pari opportunità del Comune di Napoli, art-based research culminated in the creation of a video installation. Filmed interviews were presented on 14 video monitors creating a multi-layered conversation about domestic violence, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdowns in Italy. It included the voices of survivors of domestic violence and the advocates who help them, psychologists, researchers, and abusers themselves. The immersive installation was accompanied by a panel discussion that was open to the public.
This study reports the most comprehensive assessment to date of the relations that the domains and facets of Big Five and HEXACO personality have with self-reported subjective well-being (SWB: life ...satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect) and psychological well-being (PWB: positive relations, autonomy, environmental mastery, purpose in life, self-acceptance, and personal growth). It presents a meta-analysis (n = 334,567, k = 462) of the correlations of Big Five and HEXACO personality domains with the dimensions of SWB and PWB. It provides the first meta-analysis of personality and well-being to examine (a) HEXACO personality, (b) PWB dimensions, and (c) a broad range of established Big Five measures. It also provides the first robust synthesis of facet-level correlations and incremental prediction by facets over domains in relation to SWB and PWB using 4 large data sets comprising data from prominent, long-form hierarchical personality frameworks: NEO PI-R (n = 1,673), IPIP-NEO (n = 903), HEXACO PI-R (n = 465), and Big Five Aspect Scales (n = 706). Meta-analytic results highlighted the importance of Big Five neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness. The pattern of correlations between Big Five personality and SWB was similar across personality measures (e.g., BFI, NEO, IPIP, BFAS, Adjectives). In the HEXACO model, extraversion was the strongest well-being correlate. Facet-level analyses provided a richer description of the relationship between personality and well-being, and clarified differences between the two trait frameworks. Prediction by facets was typically around 20% better than domains, and this incremental prediction was larger for some well-being dimensions than others.
Public Significance Statement
This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the substantial links between personality traits and well-being. It is the first investigation to incorporate the two most widely accepted frameworks for measuring personality (i.e., the Big Five and the HEXACO model) as well as two of the most influential models of human well-being (i.e., subjective and psychological well-being). Results of the meta-analysis provide important insights into the various pathways through which people build well-being in their lives.
