The two novels Le libere donne di Magliano by Mario Tobino and L’arte di legare le persone by Paolo Milone, despite having been published almost seventy years apart from each other, present an affine ...structural approach, which can be illuminated through a critical reading and a thematic investigation that places them in mutual dialogue, highlighting any continuity and caesures. The essay intends to examine the narrative modalities, the expressive resources and the rhetorical strategies through which the two writers-psychiatrists outline their experience within mental hospital communities (Tobino), mental health centers and psychiatric wards (Milone), highlighting not only the primary characterizations of the multiform dialectic that is triggered in the relationship between doctor (narrating voice) - patient (narrated voice), but also the relational significance that is expressed in the authorial posture adopted, from which derive then the entire baggage of formal and linguistic operations, the proximity to the subjects told, the subjectivity never zeroed.
Empirical analysis concerning the popular explanations of poverty are a little known field of research. The article analyzes this topic, considering these attitudes as predictors of the degree of ...legitimation/delegitimation of social inequalities, associated with specific social welfare programs aimed at social cohesion. Such attitudes are investigated in a comparative perspective into a group of European countries representing different welfare models, using data from the European Values Survey (EVS). The article checks the influences of specific «culture of welfare» on the attitudes toward poverty using a set of variables who investigate the conceptions of social cohesion in the sense proposed by Bernard, that is the cultural conceptions that emphasize the dimensions of freedom, equality and solidarity as specific elements that welfare should be alternatively based in its variants.
This paper deals with social cohesion as a key to the understanding of the changes taking place in welfare policies in developed countries. Social cohesion, in this perspective, is a necessary ...condition for developing new policies and further cohesion. Within this framework, social partnerships represent a working model of how innovative policies can become truly dynamic and successful in engendering local resources.
In the context of a widespread recovery of attention to the family, family associationism is gaining increasing importance. There is in fact growing awareness that the general crisis of the welfare ...system and the fraying of social bonds, which makes cohesion within the community of life difficult, have to do with the inability to support the family and its code of solidarity. Family associations respond specifically to the need to find alternative ways to produce social cohesion. This paper deals with the theme of the «family identity» of this form of associationism, as well as the relevance of family associations in relation to another central sociological theme today: social capital, which is the fulcrum around which society builds its cohesion.
Although human trafficking has a long and ignoble history, it is only recently that trafficking has become a major political issue for states and the international community and the subject of ...detailed international rules. Anne T. Gallagher calls on her direct experience working within the United Nations to chart the development of new international laws on this issue. She links these rules to the international law of state responsibility as well as key norms of international human rights law, transnational criminal law, refugee law and international criminal law, in the process identifying and explaining the major legal obligations of states with respect to preventing trafficking, protecting and supporting victims, and prosecuting perpetrators. This book is a groundbreaking work: a unique and valuable resource for policymakers, advocates, practitioners and scholars working in this controversial and important field.
This article considers how psychotherapy might better serve disabled people and people with physical impairment. Psychotherapy stands accused of making things worse for people living with physical ...impairment. Exploration of the articulation by Freud and Lacan of the emergence of subjectivity reveals the reason for the distrust of the disability studies community. However, a call has been made for psychotherapy to reflect, reform and be of service. Aspects of psychotherapeutic philosophy stand ready to offer a meaningful response; phenomenology as elucidated by Heidegger, Levinas' notions of alterity and the primacy of the other, and the unravelling of meta-narratives provided by post-modernism and post-structuralism. These aspects, together with the will to self-critique, offer a way of working that moves to an appropriate respect and service from psychotherapy for disabled people.
This collection of interdisciplinary essays explores how persons and things - the central elements of the social - are fabricated by legal rituals and institutions. The contributors, legal and ...anthropological theorists alike, focus on a set of specific institutional and ethnographic contexts, and some unexpected and thought-provoking analogies emerge from this intellectual encounter between law and anthropology. For example, contemporary anxieties about the legal status of the biotechnological body seem to resonate with the questions addressed by ancient Roman law in its treatment of dead bodies. The analogy between copyright and the transmission of intangible designs in Melanesia suddenly makes western images of authorship seem quite unfamiliar. A comparison between law and laboratory science presents the production of legal artefacts in new light. These studies are of particular relevance at a time when law, faced with the inventiveness of biotechnology, finds it increasingly difficult to draw the line between persons and things.
