Over two centuries of economic growth have put undeniable pressure on the ecological systems that underpin human well-being. While it is agreed that these pressures are increasing, views divide on ...how they may be alleviated. Some suggest technological advances will automatically keep us from transgressing key environmental thresholds; others that policy reform can reconcile economic and ecological goals; while a third school argues that only a fundamental shift in societal values can keep human demands within the Earth's ecological limits. Here we use novel integrated analysis of the energy-water-food nexus, rural land use (including biodiversity), material flows and climate change to explore whether mounting ecological pressures in Australia can be reversed, while the population grows and living standards improve. We show that, in the right circumstances, economic and environmental outcomes can be decoupled. Although economic growth is strong across all scenarios, environmental performance varies widely: pressures are projected to more than double, stabilize or fall markedly by 2050. However, we find no evidence that decoupling will occur automatically. Nor do we find that a shift in societal values is required. Rather, extensions of current policies that mobilize technology and incentivize reduced pressure account for the majority of differences in environmental performance. Our results show that Australia can make great progress towards sustainable prosperity, if it chooses to do so.
In this paper we set out to understand the housing pathways of older people who live in precarious prosperity in rural Romania. The stratum of precarious prosperity (Budowski et al. 2010) is a rather ...invisible and heterogenous social category whose household strategies and biographies are particularly understudied. Our purpose is to describe and explain micro-events in the housing histories of older Romanians belonging to this stratum and to understand agency in housing strategies in time and space. The data we use comes from a qualitative panel study conducted in a rural community in Romania. The results show that the housing pathways available to older people in the village studied are strongly embedded in family ties, intergenerational support, and co-residence housing strategies, as well as in housing policies that provide inadequate institutional support for meeting housing standards and increasing the quality of housing.
Purpose
This paper aims to narrow the gap caused by the lack of literature relating the three concepts of corporate sustainability, organizational resilience and corporate purpose in the context of ...corporations. A framework that explains how these three concepts are related and effectively merged for long-term corporate survival are proposed.
Design/methodology/approach
A systematic review is carried out. It is explained, first, initial search strategies to identify those documents that define each concept and to identify concepts with which each concept is associated. Subsequently, it is designed a search strategy combining all three concepts and their associated concepts to gather and analyze all the possible studies that have tried to connect these concepts. Finally, it is identified some gaps in the understanding of how these three concepts are related.
Findings
Results indicate that corporate sustainability, organizational resilience and corporate purpose merge to achieve long-term corporate survival. There exists a two-way relationship between these three variables. Findings also present gaps and future directions that should be addressed to foster an increase in knowledge about the relationships between corporate sustainability, organizational resilience and corporate purpose.
Originality/value
Nowadays, some authors endeavor to explain how aspects such as corporate sustainability, organizational resilience and corporate purpose are crucial in the dynamic environment facing corporations every day. Nevertheless, there needs to be more understanding of how these three concepts are related and effectively merged for long-term corporate survival. This paper contributes to the literature by closing this gap.
Sustainable rural development and higher income levels of a rural community can be achieved through indigenously owned resource-based corporations. The study aims to evolve the new economic model for ...the sustainable socio-economic development of rural areas by considering the entrepreneurial initiatives in emerging economies. It is an attempt to restore the pride of artificers and workmanship such as ‘mochi’ (cobbler), the lohar (ironsmith) the kumhar (potter) through interventions to rehabilitate their active role in creating a flexible, vibrant and responsive society. Therefore, it suggests a complete process to carry out the intervention in village communities of rural areas for their sustainable development. The entire model can be tested by collecting data from respondents; however, for this manuscript, the authors propose a solid framework with rationale. This study also proposes a model for the relevant literature named the ‘common prosperity model’. Furthermore, it has a variety of research dimensions that can be traced by the researchers, policymakers, interventionists, economists and sustainable rural development institutions.
As the new mode of resource allocation and profit distribution governance, common prosperity will be achieved effectively through the “third distribution” of corporate social responsibility (CSR) to ...regulate profit. The performance level of CSR is directly related to the profitability of the entire supply chain and its member enterprises. In the study, based on the utilization of the Shapley value method, by incorporating CSR elements, a preliminary model of profit allocation for four cooperative scenarios in the supply chain is constructed and modified to take into account the level of CSR implementation. Based on the modified model, the relationship between the performance level of CSR and the total profit of the supply chain and the member enterprises’ profit is analyzed. The study shows that the total profit of the supply chain is linearly and positively correlated with the performance level of CSR. In contrast, the profit of supply chain members has a nonlinear positive correlation with CSR performance. The impact of the whole level of CSR fulfillment on the profitability of the entire supply chain varies at different stages. Finally, the findings are discussed from the perspectives of the government, industry organizations, supply chain managers, and supply chain member enterprises, providing valuable references for the research and practice of comprehensively promoting CSR fulfillment in supply chains and realizing common prosperity.
