This paper analyses French and Italian exchanges on the subjects of feminism and gender in the light of French translations of books originally published by specialised publishing houses and ...collections in Italy. The focus on translation firstly provides a panoramic perspective on feminism, women and gender in Italy and also assesses how specialised publishing affects cultural exchanges through the transfer of these texts. Whilst the publication of a book in a specialised house provides a framework for interpreting it or reinforces its militant message, the transfer from one language to another does not always involve homologous structures. Nonetheless, through their translation, policies, specialised publishers helped to promote the transnational circulation of feminist thought, in languages other than English, through the export of various texts. The development of a new offer—previously unpublished, translated, or rediscovered, of local origin or from elsewhere—reflects the editorial rivalry generated by the opening up of a new market from the activist core, a market which was later populated by better positioned publishers.
Abstract This article examines an event that emerged in a literary field situated in a peripheral national space and later expanded to Latin America, North America, Europe, Asia and Africa: the inception of the cartoneras or cardboard publishing houses. The singularity of this movement is due to the shaping of a new object: the “cartonero book”. These cardboard publishing projects help dismantle the hegemonic circuits of both the production and the circulation of books. They have a great impact not only in the literary and the editorial fields but also in the academic and the scientific fields. This paper first characterises the Eloísa Cartonera project, the first cardboard publishing house created in Argentina en 2003. Secondly, the paper will describe the effects of this project in the national, regional and transnational circuits. Finally, we show why we can consider these effects as nano-interventions in the making of World Literature.
The research defines main direction of book publishing houses reengineering based on the analysis of successful cases of AI use in publishing business. The timeline of the research started in August ...2023 and was summarised in the beginning of January 2024. The main methods were expert interview, monitoring of international and Ukrainian internet platforms, and document analysis. The study showed that the main aspects of business processes reengineering in publishing houses, based on the use of AI, are: (1) development of business strategies and plans; (2) development of digital spaces in publishing houses; (3) emerging of new professions; (4) discussions and their summaries; (5) received manuscripts check; (6) finding plagiarism; (7) preparation of creative, advertising, and presentation materials; (8) working with numbers and databases. The recommendations on the use of AI in business processes are extracted from the policies of the organisations connected with the book publishing industry. They are presented in the convenient table for further use. One of the study results showed that Ukrainian publishing houses discuss the capabilities of AI for generating different types and formats of content, and based on that, AI capabilities for reengineering are considered. One of the biggest challenges, created by AI, is that the technology develops faster than people can perceive so they struggle to describe the technology itself and its impact. It means that we should adjust to the changes, caused by exponential development of AI, finding resources to overcome unequal access to AI capabilities in the process of specialists’ preparation.

Anne in Swedish. How the Spirit of the Age and Production Terms Influence the Protagonist’s Character Traits in Swedish Translations and Adaptations of Anne of Green Gables L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of ...Green Gables (1908) has received much academic interest. Drawing on related research on the novel and its Swedish editions, my article investigates how the variation in the Swedish versions influences the characterization of Anne 1909–2018. My study acknowledges the feminist view within translation studies as expressed by Sherry Simon, and uses Norman Fairclough’s linguistic model for contextualization. The primary material consists of Montgomery’s original text, the translations and adaptations by Karin Jensen, Aslög Davidson, Margareta Sjögren-Olsson, and Christina Westman as well as correspondence between the publishing houses and translators. Further, I have interviewed Westman and corresponded with her publisher. The texts are analysed regarding omissions and additions. On a micro-level, all active verbs where Anne is the grammatical subject are analysed. My results show that all editions give prominence to Anne’s academic ambition. A major finding is that the 1941 and 1962 versions increase Anne’s ambition by using more active verbs and stronger expressions. Westman’s 2018 edition, however, is a subtle revision of the first Swedish translation, with the result that Anne’s ambition is diminished again. Despite girls and women having gained more freedom over the last 100 years, the latest edition thereby interrupts the tendency to stress Anne’s ambition. This is understood as a result of clashing discursive and social norms. On the other hand, the emphasis on Anne’s ambition in the 1941 and 1962 editions comes with a cost of religious, moral, intellectual, and emotional aspects, creating a one-dimensional Anne.
In the contemporary dynamic and turbulent economic environment being present and up to the minute becomes a necessity for almost any business. Social media is a communication infrastructure that ...allows and concomitantly sets the rules for information and message dissemination. Just as most organizations nowadays, publishing houses need to establish a strong online presence through posts on social media platforms. As they are both economic and cultural agents, the messages shared by publishers on social networks imply a higher degree of social responsibility and their content is particularly important. The present paper aims to explore how Romanian publishing houses are communicating with their current and potential customers on social platforms. The posts on various social media such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, etc. from the last two months of 2022 and the first two months of 2023 are investigated through the content analysis research technique. As the book industry is strongly linked to the concept of knowledge, the analysis is performed from the perspective of the Theory of Knowledge Fields. The findings of this study could prove useful to various actors involved in the book industry and other cultural organizations, as it provides insights into cultural promotion via social platforms practices. The subject is topical since book consumption is an essential part of a healthy cultural and social life of a country.

Under the Coverfollows the life trajectory of a single work of fiction from its initial inspiration to its reception by reviewers and readers. The subject isJarrettsville, a historical novel by ...Cornelia Nixon, which was published in 2009 and based on an actual murder committed by an ancestor of Nixon's in the postbellum South.
Clayton Childress takes you behind the scenes to examine howJarrettsvillewas shepherded across three interdependent fields-authoring, publishing, and reading-and how it was transformed by its journey. Along the way, he covers all aspects of the life of a book, including the author's creative process, the role of the literary agent, how editors decide which books to acquire, how publishers build lists and distinguish themselves from other publishers, how they sell a book to stores and publicize it, and how authors choose their next projects. Childress looks at how books get selected for the front tables in bookstores, why reviewers and readers can draw such different meanings from the same novel, and how book groups across the country make sense of a novel and what it means to them.
Drawing on original survey data, in-depth interviews, and groundbreaking ethnographic fieldwork,Under the Coverreveals how decisions are made, inequalities are reproduced, and novels are built to travel in the creation, production, and consumption of culture.
Since the emergence of an international book market in the mid-nineteenth century, publishers have acted as gatekeepers in regulating access to literary works, including translations, and in ...constructing entire literary fields. However, from both academic and non-academic perspectives, published translations have often been examined as if in a textual vacuum, in which the translator’s strategies and choices are scrutinised via a logic of losses and gains in relation to the source text. In the wake of the incorporation of sociological theories and concepts into Translation Studies, scholars have now begun to address the institutional role played by publishing houses and to acknowledge the diversity of agents involved. This article reviews the literature on the topic since the early 2000s, focusing on studies which, while premised on various theoretical, conceptual, and methodological perspectives, show convergence in acknowledging the collaborative dynamic of publishing and its effects on both the translation process and product.
