During the second half of the 20th century, Korea has witnessed rapid urbanization. Due to such rapid developments, city districts built during this period lack adequate infrastructure. Without sufficient infrastructure, old city districts were, with the rise of new city districts, prone to deterioration. Therefore, most contemporary local urban renewal projects are required to be accompanied by infrastructural improvements. Such situation also applies to the old district of Jeonju city, the spatial scope of this paper, where the district lacks infrastructure due to its long history, but rapidly deteriorated when the urban outskirts were developed to accommodate the rapidly increasing population from urbanization. In this paper, the author focuses on a design concept that integrates infrastructural improvements with school building remodeling, demonstrating the design concept through a design project. This is followed by analyzing the applicability of the design concept through quantitative spatial analyses of 31 school sites located in the old district of Jeonju city, mainly focusing on their locational potentials to serve as infrastructural centers of their respective local communities . As a result, 19 school sites, or two thirds of the studied cases, were found to have locational potential to contribute to a successful urban renewal project when applied the design concept. Among those 19 sites, 5 were identified to be located at the very center of the neighborhood, further enhancing the potential for successful urban renewal. Therefore, it can be said that while the design concept has validity, it should also be applied with attention to the site context of each project. This study can be distinguished by setting views on achieving qualitative urban renewal through spatial reorganization as the outcome of school remodeling. Furthermore, this study contributes to the design field by providing quantitative analysis methods on the universal applicability of a design concept.

This paper examines the acquisition by The Royal Bank of Scotland of NatWest Bank, to draw some lessons about managing the integration of previously separate businesses. Having acquired NatWest in ...2000, RBS launched a major integration programme to yield the savings and revenue gains which they had promised to the capital markets during the takeover bid. The idea of “semi-structures” as an approach to managing major change provides a theoretical perspective from which to analyse subsequent events. The resulting narrative has potentially useful implications for those managing major acquisitions.
We examine the effectiveness of different learning modes in a process management context. We argue that many organizations will undergo a transformation from a function to a process orientation and ...that learning matters in this context, as a fundamental change in thinking is required. Using a questionnaire experiment with a sample of 147 participants, we found a significant influence of learning modes on the general success of learning process-oriented thinking. We observe that learning-by-doing is more effective than using documented knowledge. We raise awareness of the less studied underlying variables influencing the success of learning process-oriented thinking.
ABSTRACT The debate between adaptation and inertia hinges on whether theorists believe that organizations can effect purposive organizational change in which the realized structures match the planned ...structures. To date, research on organizational change has yielded few insights into the conditions under which such change occurs. This longitudinal case study of a re‐engineering programme at a medium‐sized bank examined the conditions under which elements of the planned structure were faithfully implemented. Elaborating a model of change fidelity, this paper argues that the features of the design elements themselves, attributes of the change process, and general contextual factors affect the likelihood that planned changes will occur.
The Springboard: How Storytelling Ignites Action in Knowledge-Era Organizations is the first book to teach storytelling as a powerful and formal discipline for organizational change and knowledge ...management. The book explains how organizations can use certain types of stories ("springboard" stories) to communicate new or envisioned strategies, structures, identities, goals, and values to employees, partners and even customers. Readers will learn techniques by which they can help their organizations become more unified, responsive, and intelligent. Storytelling is a management technique championed by gurus including Peter Senge, Tom Peters and Larry Prusak. Now Stephen Denning, an innovator in the new discipline of organizational storytelling, teaches how to use stories to address challenges fundamental to success in today's information economy.

This paper draws from behavioral finance theory to provide an alternative explanation to the efficient market hypothesis that investor under- and overreactions occur by chance. Hypotheses propose ...relationships between information technology/systems outsourcing (hereafter IT/IS) decisions on short- and long-term abnormal returns, while exploring the potentially confounding effect of organizational restructuring events that frequently follow such decisions. Using event studies techniques, it is found that although IT/IS outsourcing announcements are positively related to short-term abnormal returns, restructuring charges after the announcement moderate the relationship between the short-term effect of such announcements and long-term abnormal returns, so that long-term returns become negative when followed by organizational restructuring efforts resulting from IT/IS outsourcing.
