One of the major constraints in welding thermoplastic and thermoset composites is thermal degradation of the thermoset resin under the high temperatures required to achieve fusion bonding of the ...thermoplastic resin. This paper presents a procedure to successfully prevent thermal degradation of the thermoset resin during high-temperature welding of thermoplastic to thermoset composites. The procedure is based on reducing the heating time to fractions of a second during the welding process. In order to achieve such short heating times, which are much too short for commercial welding techniques such as resistance or induction welding, ultrasonic welding is used in this work. A particularly challenging scenario is analysed by considering welding of carbon-fibre reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone, with a melting temperature of 340°C, to carbon-fibre reinforced epoxy with a glass transition temperature of 157°C.
The cementation of indirect restoration is one of the most important steps in prosthetic and restorative dentistry. Cementation aims to bond the prosthetic restoration to the prepared enamel or ...enamel and dentine. Successful cementation protocols prevent biofilm formation at the margin between tooth and restoration and minimize mechanical and biological complications. With the advancements in dental cements, they have been modified to be versatile in terms of handling, curing, and bond strengths. This review presents updates on dental cements, focusing on the composition, properties, advantages, limitations, and indications of the various cements available. Currently, dental restorations are made from various biomaterials, and depending on each clinical case, an appropriate luting material will be selected. There is no luting material that can be universally used. Therefore, it is important to distinguish the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of luting materials in order to identify the best options for each case. Nowadays, the most commonly used dental cements are glass-ionomer and resin cement. The type, shade, thickness of resin cement and the shade of the ceramic, all together, have a tangible influence on the final restoration color. Surface treatments of the restoration increase the microtensile bond strength. Hence, the proper surface treatment protocol of both the substrate and restoration surfaces is needed before cementation. Additionally, the manufacturer's instructions for the thin cement-layer thickness are important for the long-term success of the restoration.

However, since the late 1800s, frequent, low-severity fires have greatly decreased in these forests. We hypothesized that non-lethal, low-severity, wildfire induces resin duct defense in
P. ponderosa
and that lack of low-severity fire relaxes resin duct defense in forests dependent on frequent, low-severity fire. We first compared axial resin duct traits between trees that either survived or died from bark beetle attacks. Next, we studied axial ducts using tree cores with crossdated chronologies in several natural
P. ponderosa
stands before and after an individual wildfire and, also, before and after an abrupt change in fire frequency in the 20th century. We show that trees killed by bark beetles invested less in resin ducts relative to trees that survived attack, suggesting that resin duct-related traits provide resistance against bark beetles. We then show low-severity fire induces resin duct production, and finally, that resin duct production declines when fire ceases. Our results demonstrate that low-severity fire can trigger a long-lasting induced defense that may increase tree survival from subsequent herbivory.

An intrinsic flame-retardant epoxy resin was synthesized by introducing biphenyl structures and phosphorous into epoxy resin. The biphenyl structures could increase the glass transition temperature by more than 10 °C, as well thermal stability as indicated by the elevation in char yield. They could also enhance mechanical properties as reflected by the increments of 86.4% and 176.5% in tensile strength and breaking elongation, respectively, and offset the negative effects of phosphorus-containing structures. The introduction of elemental phosphorus could improve the flame-retardant properties of epoxy resin. The resulting epoxy resin presented a high limiting oxygen index of 32.4% and a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Moreover, it exhibited better flame-retardant parameters than pure epoxy resin in the cone calorimeter test. It could be decomposed to generate PO∙ and PO2∙ radicals to quench active free radicals, reduce toxic and smoke gas generation, and form a dense and stable char layer. It could simultaneously achieve gas and condensed phase flame retardancy. The presence of the biphenyl structure and phosphorus element in the epoxy resin system improved the thermal, mechanical, and flame-retardant properties of epoxy resin simultaneously. This work offered a facile method for preparing intrinsic phosphorus-containing flame-retardant epoxy resin without sacrificing thermal and mechanical properties.
Cost-effective, practical, and efficiently performing photosensitive resin composite materials are essential, as the current materials are expensive, lack better alternatives, and do not meet 3D ...printing standards. In this study, based on orthogonal experiments for photosensitive resin curing, we prepared a free-radical/cationic hybrid photosensitive UV cured resin (UVR) using acrylic ester and epoxy resin as the prepolymers, tripropylenediol diacrylate (TPGDA) as the active diluent, and triaryl sulfonium salt (I-160) and 2,2-dimethyl-α-hydroxy acetophenone (1173) as the photoinitiators, in the optimized formula of acrylic-ester:epoxy-resin:TPGDA:I-160:1173 = 37.5:37.5:20:2.5:2.5. Further, we investigated the effects of polyurethane acrylates (PUA) and Graphene oxide (GO) on the surface morphology, chemical structure, hydrophobicity, mechanical strength, and gelation rate of the hybrid resin. We observed that 20% PUA improved tensile strength to the maximum of 36.89 MPa from 16.42 MPa of the unmodified hybrid resin, whereas 1% GO reduced volume shrinkage to the minimum of 2.89% from 3.73% of the unmodified hybrid resin. These photosensitive resins with higher tensile strength and lower volume shrinkage can be used to synthesize high performance functional materials in the future.
Abstract Objectives To evaluate the effect of the particle size of sandblasting and the composition of the resin cement on the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) to zirconia. Methods Forty zirconia ...blocks (Cercon, Dentsply) were polished and randomly treated as follows: Group 1 (NT): no treatment; Group 2 (APA-I): airborne particle abrasion (Cobra, Renfert) using 25-μm aluminium-oxide (Al2 O3 )-particles; Group 3 (APA-II): APA with 50-μm Al2 O3 -particles; and Group 4 (APA-III): APA using 110-μm Al2 O3 -particles. Ceramic blocks were duplicated in composite resin. Samples of each pretreatment group were randomly divided into two subgroups depending on the resin cement used for bonding the composite disks to the treated zirconia surfaces. Subgroup 1 (PAN), which was a 10-MDP-containing luting system, used Clearfil Ceramic Primer plus Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray) and Subgroup 2 (BIF) used Bifix SE (VOCO) self-adhesive cement. After 24 h, bonded specimens were cut into 1 ± 0.1 mm2 sticks. MTBS values were obtained using a universal testing machine (cross-head speed = 0.5 mm/min). Failure modes were recorded and the interfacial morphology of the debonded microbars was SEM-assessed. Two-way ANOVA, Student–Newman–Keuls tests, and the step-wise linear regression analysis were performed with the MTBS being the dependent variable ( p < 0.05). Results Despite the sandblasting granulometry, PAN bonded to air-abraded surfaces attained the highest MTBS and frequently showed mixed fractures. BIF recorded no significant differences in MTBS depending on the conditioning method, and registered the highest rates of premature and adhesive failures. Conclusions The 10-MDP-containing luting system seems to be the most suitable to bond zirconium-oxide ceramic, mainly after sandblasting.
Thiourea-formaldehyde (TF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF) chelating resins were synthesized and these resins were used in the separation of gold(III) ions from copper(II) and zinc(II) base metal ions. In ...the experimental studies, the effect of acidity on gold(III) uptake and gold(III) adsorption capacities by batch method, and loading and elution profiles of gold(III) ions, gold(III), copper(II), and zinc(II), dynamic adsorption capacities and the stability tests of TF and UF resins by column method were examined. By batch method, the optimum acidities were found as pH 2 and 0.5M HCl, and gold(III) adsorption capacities in the solutions including copper(II) and zinc(II) ions were obtained as 0.088 and 0.151 meq Au(III)/g for UF and TF resins, respectively. On the other hand, by column method, the dynamic adsorption capacities were calculated as 0.109 meq Au(III)/g with TF, 0.023 meq Au(III)/g with UF, 0.015 meq Cu(II)/g with TF, 0.0057 meq Cu(II)/g with UF, and under 6.1 x 10⁻⁵ meq Zn(II)/g with TF or UF. TF resin was more effective in the separation and the concentration of gold(III) ions from copper(II) and zinc(II) ions than UF resin. It was seen that sulfur atoms contributed the gold(III) adsorption comparing with oxygen atoms.
When thermoplastic resins such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are selected as wood adhesives to bond wood particles (fibers, chips, veneers) by using the hot-pressing technique, the ...formaldehyde emission issue that has long existed in the wood-based panel industry can be effectively solved. In this study, in general, thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels presented relatively higher mechanical properties and better water resistance and machinability than the conventional urea-formaldehyde resin-bonded wood-based panels. However, the bonding structure of the wood and thermoplastic materials was unstable at high temperatures. Compared with the wood-plastic composites manufactured by the extruding or injection molding methods, thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels have the advantages of larger size, a wider raw material range and higher production efficiency. The processing technology, bonding mechanism and the performance of thermoplastic-bonded wood-based panels are comprehensively summarized and reviewed in this paper. Meanwhile, the existing problems of this new kind of panel and their future development trends are also highlighted, which can provide the wood industry with foundations and guidelines for using thermoplastics as environmentally friendly adhesives and effectively solving indoor pollution problems.
When the thermoplastic composites reach the service limits during the service, the recovery and utilization are the key concerns. Meanwhile, the improvement of strength, toughness and durability of ...epoxy resin is the effective method to prolong the service life of materials and structures. In the present paper, three kinds of thermoplastic resins (polypropylene-PP, polyamide 6-PA6 and polyether-ether-ketone-PEEK) and composites (carbon fiber-PEEK, glass fiber-PA6 and glass fiber-PP) were adopted as the fillers to reinforce and toughen the epoxy resin (Ts). The mechanical, thermal and microscopic analysis were conducted to reveal the performance improvement mechanism of Ts. It can be found that adding thermoplastic resin and composite fillers at the low mass ratio of 0.5~1.0% brought about the maximum improvement of tensile strength (7~15%), flexural strength (7~15%) and shear strength (20~30%) of Ts resin. The improvement mechanism was because the addition of thermoplastic fillers can prolong the cracking path and delay the failure process through the load bearing of fiber, energy absorption of thermoplastic resin and superior interface bonding. In addition, the thermoplastic composite had better enhancement effect on the mechanical/thermal properties of Ts resin compared to thermoplastic resin. When the mass ratio was increased to 2.0~3.0%, the agglomeration and stress concentration of thermoplastic filler in Ts resin appeared, leading to the decrease of mechanical and thermal properties. The optimal addition ratios of thermoplastic resin were 0.5~1.0% (PEEK), 1.0~2.0% (PA6) and 0.5~1.0% (PP) to obtain the desirable property improvement. In contrast, the optimal mass ratios of three kinds of composite were determined to be 0.5~1.0%. Application prospect analysis indicated adding the thermoplastic resin and composite fillers to Ts resin can promote the recycling and reutilization of thermoplastic composites and improve the performance of Ts resin, which can be used as the resin matrix, interface adhesive and anti-corrosion coating.
