Few studies have explored the problem of male same-sex intimate partner violence, especially in the context of Australia. Utilizing in-depth interviews with gay-friendly service providers in ...Brisbane, the research presented in this article sought to ascertain whether (a) intimate partner violence occurs in male same-sex intimate relationships, (b) if so, what form this violence takes, (c) what contextual triggers underpin this violence, (d) what barriers victims face in exiting abusive relationships and seeking support, and (e) what services are available and appropriate to the needs of men in violent intimate relationships with other men. Results suggest that the prevalence, types and contextual triggers of violence in male same-sex relationships parallel abuse in opposite-sex relationships. Heteronormativism, homophobia, and its close association with hegemonic masculinity, however, emerge as features unique to the male same-sex intimate partner violence experience.
Using data from the American Community Survey, 2009 (N = 580,754), we compared rates of health insurance coverage and types of coverage used between women in same-sex and opposite-sex partnerships. ...This large, national dataset also allowed us to investigate regional variation in insurance coverage for women in same-sex partnerships by comparing "gay-tolerant" states versus other states. Multivariate analyses revealed that women in same-sex partnerships consistently had lower rates of health insurance coverage than married women in opposite-sex partnerships, but always more than unmarried women in opposite-sex partnerships. We also found that state-level variation in gay tolerance did not contribute to the access or type of coverage used by women in same-sex partnerships.

This volume provides the basis for understanding a wide range of interpersonal violence: child abuse; incest; violence in heterosexual, gay and lesbian relationships; acquaintance rape; wife abuse ...and rape; and elder abuse. There is no single accepted explanation for interpersonal violence, and the chapters reflect this by representing a number of disciplines from both theoretical and applied viewpoints. Many chapters take a feminist perspective, addressing the gendered nature of violence.
As of 2011, only 19 countries around the world grant immigration rights to the foreign same-sex partners of gay and lesbian citizens. Of these, Australia and Israel are two countries that recognize ...same-sex couples in the immigration system without the recognition of same-sex marriages or civil unions. Since the Defense of Marriage Act prohibits any federal recognition of same-sex unions in the USA, we compare Australia and Israel with the USA in this comparative-historical, cross-sectional study to identify the factors that led to the inclusion of same-sex partners in the immigration systems of Australia and Israel and determine whether these factors are present in the USA. Through secondary data analysis from 1988 to 2000, we find that parliamentary politics, the autonomy of ministers, and access to elite allies in Australia and Israel created a political opportunity structure that was favorable to gay rights activists. Activists then used a civil rights frame, further legitimizing their cause and reducing opposition. Although gay immigrant rights activists in the USA use a similar frame, we conclude that the political opportunity structure of the USA limits successful advocacy for gay immigration equality.
Help ease the secret suffering of lesbians in abusive relationships!
Why is woman-on-woman violence so often ignored or discounted? Intimate Betrayal: Domestic Violence in Lesbian Relationships ...uncovers the hidden problem of lesbians who hurt the women they love. This long-needed book brings together theory, practice, and research to suggest new and fruitful ways to understand, prevent, and treat this common problem.
Intimate Betrayal provides new empirical research into the psychological and sociocultural causes of abuse. As several of the chapter authors demonstrate, neither traditional feminist theories about power nor heterosexist paradigms explain the causes, dynamics, or treatment of this problem. However, the new research presented here suggests helpful diagnostic criteria and effective treatments.
Intimate Betrayal analyzes the factors that contribute to lesbian domestic violence, including:
heterosexism and homophobia
minority stress
emotional isolation and lack of community ties
revictimization of women who have previously suffered abuse
The thorough literature review included reveals the paucity of attention that has been paid to this problem. Intimate Betrayal suggests exciting new models for freeing women from domestic violence, including the use of clinical and community resources and liberation theology. Community activists, counselors, and psychologists will be intrigued by the insightful analysis of the root causes of lesbian-on-lesbian violence and the valuable treatment suggestions. Researchers will welcome the new avenues it opens for additional research.
U radu se nastoji obraditi institut uzdržavanja odraslih osoba (bračnih i izvanbračnih drugova te istospolnih partnera/ica) . Violence is a male biological trait. When women fight, no one gets seriously hurt. Lesbians don't abuse their spouses. The truth revealed in Janice Ristock's groundbreaking book is that lesbian ...relationships sometimes do turn violent. Based on interviews with more than one hundred lesbians who have suffered abuse and seventy-five case workers, No More Secrets is the first in-depth account of this startling phenomenon. Although one in four gay and lesbian couples are affected by domestic violence, the problem has remained hidden for several reasons. By giving voice to the victims, Ristock helps women to address violence by breaking silences, sharing secrets, and naming the forms of abuse.
According to the most recent National Homicide Monitoring Program (NHMP) annual report, there have been more than 6,200 homicides in Australia since data collection began in 1989-90, with one in ...every four cases involving the death of a victim killed by his or her intimate partner (see Chan & Payne 2013). Of these, the vast majority (approximately 98%) involved partners from opposite-sex relationships, while a small proportion (approximately 2%) involved partners from same-sex relationships. Same-sex intimate partner homicides are generally aggregated with all other intimate partner homicides for the purpose of broad descriptive analysis of the NHMP database.
