This paper contributes to the gap in the understudied, but increasingly salient, topic of the development of social enterprise ecosystems (SEEs) in rural areas using the Appalachian Ohio SEE as a ...framework for understanding the development of rural SEEs. Building on prior studies of the successful rural entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) in Appalachian Ohio, this paper relates the relationship between the EE and SEE in Appalachian Ohio to the context of traditional economic and community development. The case studies reviewed here illustrate the importance of the social capital of regional champions, university as convener and place for ecosystem overlap, and multiple capitals approach to community regeneration. The commonalities identified among cases suggest that a fourth wave of economic development will depend on a healthy intersection of community and economic development that recognizes the need for maintaining real ecosystem services. The SEE framework is especially suited to catalyze this intersection.
The following study sought to examine the social impact of a social enterprise mental health services model by assessing its impact on service accessibility and mental health stigma. A novel ...approach to case study – a mixed methods design was developed by collecting data from service users, counsellors, and community members of a social enterprise in Toronto, Ontario, using qualitative interviews and the Mental Health Knowledge Schedule (MAKS) survey. Findings show how the social enterprise increases service access and challenges mental health stigma by engaging in a variety of activities, including providing low--cost counselling, diversifying services, offering a positive and safe non--clinical environment, and engaging with the public directly by utilizing a storefront model. As a result of data triangulation analysis, common themes and discrepancies between respondent groups are identified and discussed. No significant relationships were found between mental health stigma and community member demographic characteristics. Insights on replication of this social impact assessment model are discussed.
En este artículo analizamos el desarrollo de empresa social en España e Italia en el marco de la crisis económica y social, en términos de difusión y marco jurídico. De esta manera, definimos los ...confines del “ecosistema” de la empresa social en los dos países e identificamos elementos comunes y especifidades. La hipótesis es que la empresa social representa una herramienta de generación de respuestas proactivas a la crisis, impulsando trayectorias de innovación económica y social, y contribuyendo a un modelo de desarrollo económica y socialmente sostenible. La innovación surge de la capacidad de las empresas sociales de generar respuestas innovativas a demandas emergentes, de su capacidad de crear al mismo tiempo valor social y económico, de satisfacer necesidades individuales y colectivas, de activar dinámicas de cambio de medio y largo plazo, de estimular dinámicas de emprendimiento, de empoderamiento y de valorización en el territorio. Sin embargo, el carácter innovador de la empresa social no surge simplemente de una empresarializacción del Tercer Sector tradicional, y mucho menos como consecuencia de la transferencia de servicios fundamentales del estado a asociaciones, cooperativas y empresas sociales, si con eso se persigue el simple objetivo de reducción de los gastos públicos. Al contrario, detrás de la retórica de la innovación social se puedan esconder proyectos de reducción de los gastos de servicios a través de la reducción de los salarios y de la cualidad de los servicios. El artículo, a partir de la comparación de la difusión del fenómeno y de las perspectivas de desarrollo en España y en Italia, termina con una reflexión crítica sobre las luces y sombras, los riesgos y las oportunidades, relacionados con la difusión de la empresa social, o sea, de la integración de la acción solidaria y la acción económica en prácticas que son al mismo tiempo empresariales y con finalidades sociales.

Entrepreneurship is one of the critical agenda projects of the Malaysian Ministry of Education since 2010. Social entrepreneurship which include Enactus and Women in Social Entreprise (WISE) is one ...important element of university entrepreneurship program. WISE is a program whereby students stay with women entrepreneurs who are affiliated with Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia to benefit both parties. This paper descriptively analyzes this innovative collaborations and its impacts to both students and women entrepreneurs. If found that the programme has positively impacted all participants; women entrepreneurs through involvement and intellectual inputs of students and for the students through hand-on learning of entrepreneurship.
L’étude de la responsabilité sociale des entreprises (RSE) cherche à analyser les démarches volontaires dans lesquelles des entreprises à but de lucre s'engagent afin de respecter, au-delà de leur ...objectif de rentabilité économique, des exigences sociales et environnementales, et d’améliorer les relations avec toutes les parties concernées par leurs activités (Bender et Pigeyre, 2003). Ces initiatives rappellent des pratiques à l'œuvre depuis plus d'un siècle dans les organisations d'économie sociale (OES), qui essayent d'atteindre des objectifs sociétaux par le biais d'une activité économique (Defourny et Develtere, 1999).
Si, à la suite de Levi (1998), on place les entreprises privées "classiques" et les OES aux extrémités d'un continuum qui s'étendrait de la "performance économique" à la "performance sociétale", on peut émettre l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'apparition de la RSE provoque un double mouvement. D'une part, les entreprises privées recherchent une certaine performance sociétale et, d'autre part, les OES visent davantage de performance économique en adoptant parfois un comportement plus typiquement commercial (Weisbrod, 1998).
En conséquence, alors que les rôles respectifs des différentes catégories d’acteurs semblaient clairement définis, les frontières se font à présent plus floues et certains domaines d’activité sont indubitablement témoins d’un rapprochement entre le secteur privé "classique" et le secteur de l'économie sociale. Néanmoins, ces deux ensembles ne semblent pas mus l’un vers l’autre de manière endogène et autonome : au contraire, il y a lieu de penser que les évolutions respectives sont le fruit d’influences réciproques.
Notre article a pour but de faire le point sur cette hypothèse de rapprochement, en partant des rôles traditionnels des institutions au sein du système socio-économique et en observant de quelle manière le monde des entreprises et celui de l’économie sociale se sont non seulement rapprochés, mais également influencés réciproquement.
Notre réflexion est structurée en trois étapes. Tout d'abord, nous présentons brièvement le contenu que nous associons aux deux concepts principaux sur lesquels repose notre argumentation (l'économie sociale et la RSE) et nous nous basons sur les arguments de la théorie économique institutionnelle pour identifier les atouts respectifs et les rôles traditionnellement dévolus aux grandes catégories d'acteurs dans nos économies. Dans un deuxième temps, nous montrons pourquoi on peut considérer la rencontre entre les OES et les entreprises à but de profit comme un des stimuli du mouvement de RSE et combien ces interactions peuvent potentiellement transformer les comportements de ces deux types d'acteurs. Enfin, nous illustrons notre hypothèse par une analyse des interactions entre OES et entreprises en quête de responsabilité sociale dans la filière du commerce équitable et éthique. Pour ce faire, nous nous basons principalement sur une étude empirique exploratoire menée sur la scène équitable belge et portant sur ces interactions et leurs conséquences en termes de gestion de l’activité économique (Huybrechts et Mertens, 2006).
The intensifying poverty and poorer living conditions, the need for greater social welfare along with ongoing damages to the natural environment in several contexts of the world have proved the ...increasing importance of social innovation for creating positive social and environmental change. This special issue addresses to the limitations in social innovation literature by providing insights into the role of inter-organizational collaborations in the process, practice and outcome of social innovation. Thus, the papers published in this special issue advance current knowledge and scholarship on different aspects of the social innovation phenomena occurring in inter-organizational contexts. The current paper reviews existing perspectives and studies on social innovation undertaken inter-organizational contexts, develops the future agenda for improving scholarship on social innovation occurring through inter-organizational collaborations, and provides the development of new theoretical ideas by focusing on some key studies in the literature and papers published in this special issue. With a focus on subsistence contexts that are characterized by limiting institutional environments, this paper identifies the types of partnerships that are being formed by social enterprises and individual social entrepreneurs, and how they may facilitate and foster social innovation practice and performance through social value creation.
Cette recherche examine le lien entre la Responsabilité Sociale d’Enterprise (RSE) des Institutions de Microfinance (IMFs) et les investisseurs étrangers (F.Is) dans le contexte où la micro finance ...commercialisée a un double objectif (DBL). Le cadre théorique et conceptuel de cette étude comprend la théorie de l'agence, la théorie des parties prenantes, la théorie de la dépendance aux ressources et le concept d'Investissement Socialement Responsable (ISR). L'étude empirique est basée sur un processus en deux étapes, une première étude qualitative exploratoire réalisée à travers des entretiens semi-directif avec 9 gestionnaires de fonds (ISR) afin de bien comprendre le sujet et d'enrichir les théories et les concepts. La deuxième étape consiste en une analyse quantitative à l'aide des modèles des moindres carrés ordinaires (OLS) et de la régression logistique en utilisant les données de 615 IMF pour l'année 2012 pour vérifier le lien entre les F.Is et la RSE et si la performance financière joue un rôle de médiateur ou de modérateur. Pour la première fois en microfinance, une définition globale / multi dimensionnelle de la RSE est utilisée et des indicateurs calculés sur la base de cela. Les résultats montrent que la RSE est un facteur clé dans les décisions d'investissement de F.Is et il montre un effet de médiation de la performance financière sur la relation entre la RSE et F.Is. Afin d'assurer l'accès aux services financiers au bas de la pyramide, les IMFs ont besoin d'avoir accès aux investisseurs étrangers. Comme la RSE est prise en compte par les investisseurs dans leur décision d'investissement, les IMF doivent donc se concentrer sur la gestion et la présentation des activités pertinentes de RSE afin d'attirer et de satisfaire ces investisseurs.
This research examines the link between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) and foreign investors (F.Is) in the context that commercialized Microfinance has double-bottom-line. The theoretical and conceptual framework for this study includes the agency theory, stakeholder’s theory, resource dependence theory and the concept of Socially Responsible Investment (SRI). The empirical study is based on a two-step process, an initial exploratory qualitative study carried out through semi-structured interviews with 9 fund managers (SRI) in order to understand well the topic and enrich the theories and concepts. The second step is a quantitative analysis through ordinary least squares (OLS) and logistic regression models using data of 615 MFIs for the year 2012 to verify the link between F.I and CSR and if financial performance plays a mediator or moderator role. For the first time in microfinance, a comprehensive/multi-dimensional definition of CSR is used and indicators calculated based on that. The results show that CSR is a key factor in investment decisions of F.Is and it shows a mediation effect of financial performance on the relationship between CSR and F.Is. In order to provide access to financial services at the bottom of the pyramid, MFIs need access to foreign investors. As CSR is taken into account by investors in their investment decision, therefore, MFIs need to focus on managing and reporting relevant CSR activities in order to attract and satisfy these investors.
