Il s’inscrit ...dans un contexte de retour au passé colonial par le biais des arts et de la littérature, ce que cet article rappelle en introduction. Le spectacle effectue ce retour sous la forme d’un théâtre critique qui, par le refus du quatrième mur, oblige le spectateur à une attitude active, engagée, loin du confort du théâtre de l’illusion. L’analyse des formes de ce retour, le grotesque notamment, occupera la seconde partie de ce texte. Le projet porté par la compagnie ne fait tout à sens que si l’on tient compte de sa perspective politique et pédagogique. Un débat suit d’ailleurs la plupart des représentations, nous y reviendrons dans la dernière partie.
Mediatization theory has been used to describe the development of the Tour de France, from its inception as an event created by a newspaper to sell newspapers to the global spectacle it has become. ...Yet, perhaps the Tour’s most infamous aspect, its historical reputation for doping, is yet to be explored through the lens of mediatization, as both a media and a social issue. Furthermore, that sport media scholars allude to a need for better understanding of media coverage of doping beyond headline-capturing doping scandals, establishes a precedent for the examination and comparison of newspaper framing of Lance Armstrong (2004) and Chris Froome (2017). To do so, this research operationalizes mediatization theory in combination with framing theory to investigate news framing of rider/doping suspicion grounded in the historical context of the event, revealing the interplay between framing of rider/doping suspicion and event mediatization processes.
In 1741, a Dutch sea captain succeeded in transporting a live female Indian rhino calf from north-east India to his home town of Leiden. Named "Clara," she was only the fifth Indian rhinoceros to be ...seen on European soil since the fall of the Roman empire and the only rhinoceros on the continent in the mid-eighteenth century. From 1741 to 1758, Douwemout Van der Meer displayed Clara across Europe to commoners and kings. In 1751, Van der Meer took Clara to Venice, to show her during Carnival. But en route to Venice, Clara shed her horn. Clara and the crowds that queued to see her-even in her hornless state-are recorded in the paintings and etchings of the father and son, Pietro and Alessandro Longhi. The article provides a brief introduction to Clara's history and mid-eighteenth-century European odyssey, before examining her 1751 visit to Venice. At that time, the fragility of Clara's status as the only one of her kind in Europe was further heightened by her shed horn, while rumors that she had been lost to the Grand Canal may be seen as an astute marketing ploy on the part of Van der Meer, and strangely prescient of the potential disappearance of both the rhinoceros and Venice itself.
To assess the spectacle independence and satisfaction of subjects after bilateral implantation of the PanOptix
trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) at the time of cataract surgery.
Single site, ...prospective, single-arm study.
Eligible subjects interested in a trifocal IOL to potentially reduce dependence on spectacles for near, intermediate and distance vision were enrolled and followed for 3 months after the second eye surgery. Visual acuity and refractive data were collected 1 month and 3 months postoperative, including the uncorrected and best distance-corrected binocular visual acuities at distance (4m), intermediate (60 cm) and near (40cm). A patient satisfaction and spectacle independence questionnaire were administered at the 3-month visit.
A total of 30 subjects successfully completed the study. Eighty-five percent of eyes (51/60) had a refraction within 0.50 D of plano with ≤ 0.50 D of refractive cylinder. One subject (3%) reported needing glasses for distance work, 3 (10%) for intermediate work and 4 (13%) for near work. Ninety percent or more of all subjects reported never wearing glasses or wearing them only a little at all working distances. Ninety percent or more were able to function without glasses at all 3 working distances all or most of the time. More than ninety percent of subjects reported being "com.pletely" or "mostly" satisfied with their vision without glasses or contact lenses at all three distances and overall.
A high percentage of patients are likely to achieve spectacle independence for distance, intermediate and near vision with this trifocal IOL.
This paper examines the planning and staging of the 1984 Louisiana Exposition, the last world's fair in the United States, and makes comparisons with other US world's fairs, to provide insight into ...the sources of opposition and resistance to urban spectacles. Drawing on the work of Guy Debord and his concept of the 'Society of the spectacle', this paper advances a conception of mega events as spectacles of contestation that embody contradictory tendencies and articulate conflictual and opposing meanings of urban space and reality. Rather than obscuring and camouflaging urban problems, mega events like world's fairs express social inequalities and display highly contradictory urban representations that can spawn resistant agendas, complicate élite redevelopment agendas and divide pro-growth coalitions. Through a critical interrogation of the Debordian concept of spectacle, the analysis in this paper suggests a new theory of mega events as sites of struggle and articulators of political dissent, a conception that helps to explain the increasing international opposition and protest against the Olympics and the mega-event strategy.
This article provides a self-reflexive account of ethnographic research conducted on the outskirts of Burj Al Brajneh, a Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut, run by Hezbollah. It focuses on ...ethnographic research conducted with a Syrian refugee family including the mother, father and three children. The research is well captured, in hindsight, by Sarah Pink’s definition of ethnography as a ‘reflexive and experiential process through which academic and applied understanding, knowing and knowledge are produced’. The article demonstrates how the ethnographer’s experience with the refugee children was marked, regardless of long and diligent preparations, by several dislocations: methodological, sensorial and epistemic. The ethnographer pursued a non-media-centric approach allowing him to explore both the refugee family’s media uses as well as the lived, everyday conditions that marked their media uses. The primary aim of the article is three-pronged: (a) to provide an ethnographic description and analysis of the media worlds in a Hizbullah area in South Beirut, (b) to analyse media uses and aesthetics of violence in the context of war/refugees’ lives and (c) to theorise using the Heideggerian concept of thrownness, the entangled and affective regime that emerges during the ethnographic encounter.
Many people for different reasons end up wearing glasses to correct their vision. From time immemorial, there has been an unquestionable ability to associate people with glasses. Designing the ...glasses according to the physiognomy of each person opens a new path for a completely new optical experience. The frames are designed to fit perfectly on the face, are comfortable on the nose, and are positioned at an optimal distance from the cheeks and eyelashes. Three-dimensional printing technology offers the possibility to customize any form of glasses at a low cost with average quality. In this type of technology, the printer receives a digitized model of the spectacle frame (usually in STL file format) that must meet the parameters related to the wearer's anatomy. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative process, an optical method used to scan the wearer's face to design a parameterized design of the spectacle frames. The procedure has a measurement phase for quantifying the anatomical features of the wearer's face, a para-metric design phase of the glasses for adjusting the design parameters according to the anatomical characteristics, and a manufacturing phase in which the custom eyeglass frame will be manufactured using 3D printing technology. The aim of this study was to create an innovative process that could be tested as an educational 3D printing system that could be used by undergraduate students (studying under an optometry program), a process that would begin at optometric prescription stage and can be used in the educational laboratory of the Department of Mechatronics and Precision Mechanics from the Politehnica University of Bucharest. Using this method we obtained a custom spectacle frame that can be prototyped using 3D printing. The 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) frames are lightweight, flexible, durable, and the innovative photogrammetry process gives designers the ability to create custom designs that cannot be created with traditional manufacturing techniques.
To analyze the objective and subjective visual performances of a new hybrid refractive/aspheric extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL).
In this monocentric prospective study patients ...with bilateral cataracts underwent cataract surgery and were implanted with a Lucidis IOL (SAV-IOL SA, Neuchâtel, Switzerland) in both eyes, 1 week apart from each other. At 3 months from implantation postoperative evaluations included monocular and binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected distant (4 m), intermediate (80 cm, 67 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities (UDVA/DCVA, UI80-67VA/DCI80-67VA, UNVA/DCNVA), binocular defocus curves, halometry, contrast sensitivity and objective quality-of-vision measurements. Also, patients were also asked to complete the national eye institute refractive error quality of life (NEI-RQL-42) questionnaire.
Twenty-five patients (50 eyes) were included. The mean postoperative binocular UDVA, UI80VA, UI67VA and UNVA were-0.02 ± 0.13, 0.05 ± 0.09, 0.05 ± 0.08 and 0.03 ± 0.1 LogMar, and did not significantly differ from their corrected counterparts. On binocular defocus curves a VA ≥0.05LogMar was found between +0.50 and - 2.50 D of vergence, whereas the mean distance from the central stimulus on halometry was 1.23 ± 0.01. Mean ocular and corneal radical mean square at 4 mm were 0.31 ± 0.28 and 0.19 ± 0.07, respectively; whereas the mean Strehl ratio was 0.2 ± 0.09.
Lucidis IOLs demonstrated excellent visual performances, especially at close distances while maintain good quality of vision, contrast sensitivity, and overall patient-satisfaction.

Her talk deals with European Renaissance theatrical spectacles performed in front of the monarch and court. They carried serious political messages regarding the relationship – both real and hoped for – between the monarch and the state. Contemporary accounts of these events often offer fulsome praise for the costumes, dancing, scenery, stage machines and songs. A successful performance greatly enhanced a country’s reputation on the international stage. Much more was at stake than an evening’s entertainment.
