Avidyne TWX670 weather detection system receives ETSO Article Type: Safety notes From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 4 Avidyne Corporation ...recently announced that its TWX670 tactical weather detection system – the color, real-time, lightning-based tactical weather avoidance system for general aviation aircraft – has received European Technical Standards Order (ETSO) authorisation from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The TWX670 provides a color map of a thunderstorm’s electrical activity over time, which easily allows the pilot to determine the areas of greatest intensity, and clearly identify areas with potential for convective wind shear, turbulence, micro-bursts, hail and icing. During setup it provides a spectrum analyzer-like display to clearly identify sources of onboard electrical noise, making antenna location much simpler and eliminating much of the hassle typically associated with lightning system installations.
In this paper, a low-cost Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) design is presented: from an initial study of network analysis fundamentals to a working design. In a first part of this paper, the ...architecture and functionality of a VNA are handled. The hardware components and their specifications are described. The design in this paper uses a Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) to generate signals. To measure phase and magnitude differences, integrated detectors are used. The design needs to be able to run embedded software in order to work. The programs, written in C code on an ARM processor, give the user the opportunity to set up the measurements using an LCD display, showing the results in a magnitude and phase plot or a Smith chart with a marker indication for reading out characteristics.
Awareness about the use of network assets and spectral resources in particular requires continuous and seamless monitoring throughout the network. Dense network architectures with high dynamicity in ...its highly populated links call for a distributed rather than a centralized approach so that the respective monitoring functionality should be integrated in all network terminals. In order not to introduce additional cost, we propose to re-use a transmitter that is widely adopted in direct-modulation / direct-detection systems as a spectral monitor. We experimentally demonstrate that an externally modulated laser is offering the functionality of a continuously tunable coherent receiver in order to down-convert optical signals to the RF domain for subsequent narrowband slicing and power integration. Modulation spectra for on-off keyed signals at different data rates and pulsed signals can be correctly acquired over a spectral range of 320 GHz, in virtue of the high resolution that the proposed coherent spectrum analyser is offering. The errors in wavelength and magnitude are less than 36 pm and 4.6 dB, respectively.

The RF current produced by arcing in air at 380Vdc was investigated for current sranging from 2Adc to 120Adc. Time resolved frequency maps were obtained using a real-time spectrum analyzer (RSA) to ...show how polarity, electrode material and current magnitude affected the measured RF current intensity. These dc signatures were also compared to previously obtained ac signatures using the same materials and methods to show differences between ac and dcarcing. This work is useful to those who want to gain an understanding of RF currents generated in arcs, especially for those developing arc fault sensing devices. Examples of dc systems represent systems built to meet North American standards, but the underlying physics and results can apply to any country.

Partial discharge (PD) is one of the predominant factors to be controlled to ensure reliability and undisrupted functions of power generators, motors, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and grid ...connected power distribution equipment, especially in the future smart grid. The emergence of wireless technology has provided numerous opportunities to optimise remote monitoring and control facilities that can play a significant role in ensuring swift control and restoration of HV plant equipment. In order to monitor PD, several approaches have been employed, however, the existing schemes do not provide an optimal approach for PD signal analysis, and are very costly. In this paper an RTL-SDR (Software Defined Radio) based spectrum analyser has been proposed in order to provide a potentially low cost solution for PD detection and monitoring. Initially, a portable spectrum analyser has been used for PD detection that was later replaced by an RTL-SDR device. The proposed schemes exhibit promising results for spectral detection within the VHF and UHF band.
