Abstract Background Stroke is one of the primary causes of disability in China and around the world, having an impact on the health and well-being of stroke patients. The importance of spiritual ...needs for stroke patients has always been a controversial topic internationally, partly because related research was mostly qualitative and may not directly reflect the degree of spiritual needs. In addition, most studies focus on the same cultural background, there is a lack of research that delves into the nuances of Chinese culture and background. The goal of this study is to evaluate the level of spiritual needs and influencing factors in Chinese stroke patients and to explore the mediating role and pathways of these variables on spiritual needs. Methods From August 2022 to January 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 422 stroke patients in the affiliated hospitals of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine in Changsha Province by cluster sampling. We measured the patient’s spiritual needs, quality of life, anxiety and depression levels, and family support using the Spiritual Needs Questionnaire (SPNQ), the MOS36 item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Family Support Self Rating Scale (PSS-Fa). We used the General Information Questionnaire to gain insight into the sociodemographic characteristics of the patients. Nonparametric tests and multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the independent relationship between spiritual needs and quality of life, anxiety, depression, and family support. The mediation model in AMOS 24.0 software was used to analyze the mediating role among the five variables. Results The score of spiritual needs of people with stroke included in this study was 37 points IQR 33 to 40). The influencing factors of spiritual needs included primary economic sources for disease-related expenditures ( p = 0.044), number of stroke occurrences ( p = 0.001), duration of illness ( p = 0.023), activities of daily living ( p = 0.006), depression scores( p = 0.034), and family support scores( p = 0.008). Anxiety (β = 0.347, p = 0.004), depression (β = 0.368, p = 0.005), and family support (β = 0.167, p = 0.023) had directly or indirectly affected the spiritual needs of people with stroke. Quality of life (β=-0.202, p = 0.017) had a direct effect on spiritual needs. Conclusions The spiritual needs of people with stroke were at an intermediate level. Our findings highlight that the SPNQ score is associated with anxiety, depression, quality of life, and family support. Therefore, nurses should identify the spiritual needs of patients and provide them with effective and comprehensive spiritual care by reducing negative emotions and enhancing social support, promoting the development and progress of spiritual care in China. This study offers a theoretical basis for the spiritual care of clinical people with stroke and constructing a stroke spiritual care model.

Patient-reported clinical outcome measures assessing spiritual and social support needs and PICS-related symptoms were extracted from the electronic health record. Patients had a median age of 61 (interquartile range IQR, 51-68.5), and majority were male (55.1%) with a moderate comorbidity burden (Charlson comorbidity index median score, 3; IQR, 2-5). Social support and spiritual needs were prevalent. Of the 196 patients, over 50% reported unpreparedness/fearful for the future, half of patients reported not feeling in control of their care, and over one-third reported needing more support than their family, friends, or insurance can provide. Nearly 13% of respondents reported feeling abandoned or punished by God/not supported by their church/faith. Many patients reported overlapping PICS-related symptom domains (physical, psychologic, and cognitive). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed associations between reported PICS-related symptoms and the presence of spiritual and social needs.
Patients surviving critical illness experience significant social support and spiritual needs independent of commonly identified manifestations of PICS. These findings support the need for formal assessment and tailored interventions for social support and spiritual needs in critical illness survivors.

Los instrumentos empleados fueron la entrevista, el Instrumento para la Detección del Sufrimiento de Bayés y colaboradores y el Cuestionario de Conexión Espiritual de Wheeler y Hyland.Resultados: Se halló asociación significativa entre el malestar y el sexo masculino (p=0,04), la tenencia de hijos (p=0,01), la necesidad de “ser reconocido como persona” (p=0,01) y “volver a leer su vida” (p=0,01), mientras que el bienestar se asoció a la preparación para la hemodiálisis (p=0,01) y a la necesidad de “amar y ser amado” (p=0,00); también se encontró entre el nivel medio general de conexión espiritual y las necesidades: “volver a leer su vida” (p=0,03) y “continuidad, de un más allá” (p=0,02).Conclusiones: El sufrimiento se asoció al sexo, la tenencia de hijos y a determinadas necesidades espirituales. Las necesidades espirituales más reportadas fueron: “amar y ser amado”, “volver a leer su vida” y “expresar sentimientos y vivencias religiosas”
This study was conducted to determine and compare the spiritual care needs of cancer patients and their caregivers. A comparative descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed in this study. The ...study comprised 102 patients who were registered in the hospital’s home care unit, as well as their caregivers (total number = 204). The data were collected using a personal information form and the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory. The cancer patients had a mean age of 69.5 years, while their caregivers’ mean age was 53.1 years. According to the results, the cancer patients needed more spiritual care than their caregivers (

It is important to evaluate the spiritual needs of patients with cancer and their caregivers. In this evaluation, it is essential to elicit the perspectives of cancer patients and their caregivers concerning spiritual needs and religion. Effective spiritual care for patients and their caregivers can only be provided if their beliefs and priorities are taken into consideration.

In this qualitative study, 18 cancer patients, referred to the Cancer Institute of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran were selected using purposive sampling method, and their spiritual needs emerged out of conventional content analysis of interviews conducted with them.
From 1850 initial codes, 4 themes (connection, peace, meaning and purpose, and transcendence) were identified that contained categories of social support, normal behavior, inner peace, seeking forgiveness, hope, acceptance of reality, seeking meaning, ending well, change of life meaning, strengthening spiritual belief, communication with God, and prayer.
Spiritual needs of cancer patients should be recognized, realized, and considered in care of patients by the medical team. An all-out support of health system policy makers to meet patients' spiritual needs is particularly important.
The Spiritual Needs Questionnaire (SpNQ) is an established measure of psychosocial, existential and spiritual needs. Its 4-factor structure has been primarily validated in persons with chronic ...diseases, but until now has not been done in elderly and stressed healthy populations. Therefore, we tested the factor structure of the SpNQ in: (1) persons with chronic diseases (n = 627); (2) persons with chronic disease plus elderly (n = 940); (3) healthy persons (i.e., adults and elderly) (n = 1468); and (4) chronically ill, elderly, and healthy persons together (n = 2095). The suggested structure was then validated using structured equation modelling (SEM). The 4-factor structure of the 20-item SpNQ (SpNQ-20) was confirmed, differentiating Religious Needs, Existential Needs, Inner Peace Needs, and Giving/Generativity Needs. The psychometric properties of the measure indicated (CFI = 0.96, TLI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.04 and SRMR = 0.03), with good reliability indices (Cronbach’s alpha varying from 0.71 to 0.81). This latest version of the SpNQ provides researchers with a reliable and valid instrument that can now be used in comparative studies. Cultural and religious differences can be addressed using their different language versions, assuming the SpNQ’s structure is maintained.
The "Holistic Care Program for Elderly Patients to Integrate Spiritual Needs, Social Activity and Self-Care into Disease Management in Primary Care" (HoPES3) examines the implementation of a ...spiritual history (SH) as part of a multifaceted intervention in German general practices. While the effectiveness of the interventions was evaluated in a cluster-randomized trial, this article investigates the patients' views concerning the acceptability of the SH and its effects.
A mixed-methods study was conducted in which 133 patients of the intervention group filled in a standardized questionnaire after the intervention. Later, 29 of these patients took part in qualitative semi-standardized interviews.
According to the survey, 63% (
= 77) of patients found the SH helpful. In the interviews, however, many indicated that they either kept the conversation brief or declined the offer to talk about spirituality. Contents of longer conversations referred to difficult life events, personal sources of strength, and experiences with religious institutions. Many patients who had a longer conversation about spirituality reported that their relationship with their general practitioner (GP) had improved. Almost all patients recommended integrating a personal conversation of this kind into primary care.
The SH seems to be a possible 'door opener' for a trusting doctor-patient relationship, which can then be built upon.
It has been previously demonstrated that religiosity and spirituality can help support people living with HIV. Despite this, little work has been undertaken on this theme. Using the PRISMA ...methodology, we reviewed academic literature from 2008 to 2020 to summarize how people living with HIV define spiritual needs. We found fifty-nine distinct types of approach that were related to this theme and were grouped into four main categories: religious needs, social needs, existential needs, and emotional needs. Religious needs were more frequently cited, including individual prayers, the ingestion of miraculous medicines, and so on. The study calls attention to the concept’s multidimensionality and the cultural differences in the included papers. It reveals the need of each culture to research, to find an adequate meaning of spirituality, and to cater to the spiritual needs for people living with HIV as part of their healthcare, before setting health policies.
Abstract Context The hospital is a place full of distress and questions about the meaning of life. The death of a child can cause a spiritual struggle and crisis. Therefore, it is necessary for ...health care providers in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to assess the spiritual needs of families that have lost a child. Objectives The purpose of this study was to explore the spiritual needs of families in Iran at the end of their baby’s life and through bereavement in the NICU. Methods This study was an exploratory qualitative study performed using purposeful sampling and semi-structured interviews with 24 participants. Inclusion criteria for families, nurses and physicians included having experienced at least one newborn death in the last six months in the NICU. The research environment was the NICU in Isfahan, one of the largest cities in Iran. Results Data analysis revealed three main themes: spiritual belief in a supernatural power, the need for comfort of the soul, and human dignity for the newborn. Conclusion The results of this study created a new vision in addressing spiritual needs of Iranian families who experience the death of a newborn.
Clients often have spiritual needs. Many mental health counselors argue that spirituality should be included in counseling, whereas others contend that religious issues may be beyond the bounds of ...counselor competence. Though much counselor opinion on spirituality in therapy has been published, little has been published on client desires. Therefore, this study conducted a literature review of research in mental health counseling to examine client expectations and preferences for addressing religion and spirituality in counseling. This manuscript summarizes one of the largest samples of literature on this topic ever reviewed, spanning 64 peer-reviewed journal articles by 148 different authors in 32 different journals, surveying over 64,000 participants, including 4,697 actual counseling clients. We review client-focused research with 4 themes: expectations about spirituality in counseling, preferences for addressing spirituality in counseling, preferences against addressing spirituality in counseling, and the process of spirituality in counseling. Some clients want counseling to address their spiritual issues extensively and expect this to occur, while others prefer these issues to be addressed in the context of other, more primary issues. Still others prefer spiritual issues not to be addressed at all. Client magnitude of spiritual beliefs, client gender, the match between the client and counselor's beliefs and values, type of therapy, and counselor openness to spiritual issues may be key factors that influence what clients want to talk about in counseling. It is our hope that clinicians find this review to be helpful in addressing the spiritual concerns of clients-whether religious, spiritual, or secular.
