This study has purposes to analyze and describe the language style used by Hans Christian Andersen in his short story entitled 'A Little Match Girl' by using pragmatic aspects that are carried out by ...analyzing deixis components in the story text. This research applied the descriptive qualitative design. By using pragmastylistics theory, this research focuses on the type of deixis used by the author in presenting his story which is then used to reveal the language style of the literary text. The data of this study were collected from deictic words used in the short story. The steps which are used by the researchers are begun from reading, taking notes, analyzing, categorizing and then summarizing the data. The results reveal five kinds of deixis consisting of person, time, place, social and discourse deixis were used in the text. From the data analysis, 97 deixis were found in total with 65 data of person deixis, 4 data of place deixis, 4 data of time deixis, 14 data of social deixis, and 10 data of discourse deixis. Finally, the most frequent deixis found in the short story is the person deixis, especially third-person deixis which indicates that the author of the short story used third-person point of view to convey his ideas in his short story.
As one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature,
narrates a legendary Buddhist pilgrimage. Until now, the religious conversion in the novel remains much less explored by academia. We ...propose an innovative approach to addressing this shortfall by conducting a corpus-based investigation into the characterization of the protagonist “Great Sage.” We use the corpus tools BFSU PowerConc 1.0 and LancsBox v.2.0.1 to calculate and visualize the collocation networks of Great Sage: for one thing, to contextualize the complex interactions between him and the external environment; for another, to define and compare different phases of the character’s evolution. The collocational networks are derived by means of a quantitative approach, i.e. a mutual information (MI) score with collocation cutoff values. This lays an objective foundation for a subsequent qualitative interpretation of how the protagonist’s identity is forged in his conversion. Further, some associated literary and theological scholarships are woven into our text-based analysis.
This paper examines the stylistic of Sulaiman's story in the Qur’an and its chronology. The language style has a building in the historical social context of the Arab community when it came down to ...the Qur’an. This article aimed to find the chronology and function of each language style used in the story of Sulaiman. This study was a library research with descriptive and analytical data presentation methods. The primary data were taken from the Qur’an in Surah Şād (30–40). A hetorical and chronological analysis wass used in this research. The finding of this study showed that the rhetoric of Sulaiman's story in Surah Şād still used a high style of language. Based on these findings, a strong language style is a characteristic of the Sulaiman's story to strengthen the prophet's heart, console the prophet and give the encouragement of spreading da’wa of Muhammad. This study contributes to a complete understanding of language style.
It is seen that applying literature in EFL courses and contexts plays an essential role in promoting language skills. Literary stylistic analysis can be used as an effective tool to improve and ...enhance learner's ability, awareness and, perception in reading and writing. Pedagogical stylistics is a discipline that employs stylistic analysis in teaching written texts to speakers of English as a second language so as to facilitate a better understanding of the meaning of literature and to improve language acquisition. This study investigates the application of pedagogical stylistics in teaching poetry as a device to improve and enhance students' knowledge of English language learning. Pedagogical activities in the class stimulate students' awareness and competence of how language is structured and used with exposition to the mental processes of comprehension of the meaning. The study aims to answer the following main questions: 1) What is the relationship between style and literature and why literary texts used in language teaching? 2) Is the application of ped+agogical stylistics as a branch of stylistics fruitful and effective in enhancing students' awareness in English language learning? The study has shown that pedagogical stylistics makes a real contribution to enhance and digest the realization of language learning through literary text. Also, it is revealed that students' intuition, motivation, linguistic and grammatical knowledge are increased with the pedagogical stylistic activities( before, while and after reading) especially when they are given analysis courses of stylistic devices, so they are given more chances and constant encouragement to deepen their performance and skills of learning.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to delve deeper into issues of stylistics as addressed in the interpretation of Rabelais’ works, Gargantua and Pantagruel (1532-1564), from Spitzer’s ...perspective, while looking for related aspects from a Bakhtinian perspective. The principles on which the analysis is based are the concept of style and literature that crosses Spitzer and Bakhtin’s analyses, revealing contrasting aspects in the interpretation of this Rabelaisian work.
Military discourse has a considerable impact on the lives of people all over the world, yet only few scholars have paid considerable attention to this sort of discourse. This leads to an obvious need ...to investigate this genre from different perspectives including stylistics which is the main concern of this study. The study is intended to stylistically analyze a sample of three American military creeds. The study hypothesizes that American military creeds have their own figurative devices which make them distinct texts, and that the figurative devices employed in military creeds vary in terms of their frequencies and functions. The study also hypothesizes that, being written discourse, military creeds are figuratively based, and that the employed figurative devices have a complementary role. They all contribute together to fulfill the creeds’ aims and convey their intended messages. The selected samples are analyzed in the light of Leech and Short’s (2007) model which accounts for figurative devices. The results of analysis show that military creeds have their own distinctive stylistic features, and they are figuratively based. The results also show that the stylistic figurative devices characterizing military creeds have a complementary role in that they all contribute together to achieve the creeds' aims and convey their intended messages.
A film poem is a cinematic work which uses a written, often canonical poem as its inspiration. Film poems frequently exceed the likely intentions of the poet, becoming something new; one creative ...work is used as a springboard for another. Typically, however, in film poems the poem’s stylistic detail is largely irrelevant to its cinematic execution.
In a previous article, I spotlighted how this oversight/limitation can be addressed by bringing film poems into stylistics teaching and assessment. That article showed how stylistic analysis of a poem can be used to drive generation of a screenplay for a film of the poem. But, it did not show how the film could be produced on that basis. In contrast, this article does just that, modelling how a student could make a film from a poem, with their mobile device, where stylistic analysis has been used to stimulate the screenplay.
Accompanying this article is a film that I made on a mobile phone. This is of Michael Donaghy’s poem, Machines. In developing this approach for producing film poems via stylistic analysis, I incorporate ideas from the philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, and from his collaboration with the psychoanalyst, Félix Guattari, in their book A Thousand Plateaus. In particular, I make use of their concept of ‘intensive multiplicity’. Generally, this article highlights how common ownership of mobile devices by university students, in many countries, can be used, in conjunction with stylistic analysis, to foster a different approach to interpreting poetry creatively which, in turn, can extend students’ natural capacity for creative thinking.
Style means the ways of using language. Each utterance is expressed in different styles. Researches noticed that literary expressions are higher than normal expression. The style of the writer comes ...from this literary background. There is no doubt that each text holds the identity of the owner, because it is the experience of that writer that is why the style of one is different from the other. The function of style denotes those different styles in each literary text. The function of style is to deal with inner and outer sides of the text. As a matter of fact Chinar Namiq as a women has her own style of writing poem this affected us to conduct this study (poetic style of Chinar Namiq in terms of function of style) and she’d light on some of her techniques that show her style. This research is arranged into two parts, part one is about terms of style and stylistic, Direction of style, Function of style. Part two is about Functional stylistics of Chinar Namiq’s poems.
Cognitive stylistics offers a renewed focus on readerly or audience interpretation, but while cognitive stylistic tools have been applied in the investigation of literary texts, their application to ...TV, film and screen has been more limited. This article examines the cognitive stylistic features of the voiceover narration in the first TV series adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to explore the representation of June/Offred’s ‘split selves’ and how these are mediated through a prominent ‘filmic composition device’. Through analysis of voiceovers and corresponding production choices in series 1, this study explores, first, how the different modes of communication – both choices of visual production (such as shallow-focus shots) and linguistic features (such as ‘you’ address and container metaphors) – combine to show Offred’s split perspective; and second, how these stylistic elements work to foreground the key themes of the series, such as imprisonment, objectification and surveillance.
Today the dissemination of information is very easy to obtain, this much information is often related to problems of daily life so it is often used as a reference to address or solve a problem, maybe ...even in deciding something. In the context of today's life, there are many cases related to this information issue. This research is to examine more deeply through research on how the meaning of the verses of the Qur'an are related to this information problem in the context we are facing today. This study uses qualitative research related to the process of obtaining correct and accountable information both in relation to humans and to God. This research produces alternative strategies in understanding and responding to analyzing information that is still doxa in nature so as to produce beliefs to be the basis for responding to or following up on the contents of the information
