As a new class of comet, main belt comets (MBCs) have attracted more and more attention in recent years. To study activity and physical properties of three MBCs 176P/LINEAR, 238P/Read and ...288P/(300163) 2006 VW139, we carried out broadband CCD photometry of three MBCs on UT 2016 November 18–19 with the 1-m optical telescope at Lulin Observatory in Taiwan. By comparing cometary surface brightness profiles to stellar surface brightness profiles, and by comparing cometary absolute magnitude to the expected magnitude of inactive nucleus, we found that 176P/LINEAR was inactive, while 238P/Read and 288P/(300163) 2006 VW139 were active. By photometric studies, we obtained the Afρ values and the dust production rates. Finally, the activity of three MBCs were discussed. Our photometric results show that the total dust mass of 238P/Read and 288P/(300163) 2006 VW139 obtained in this work are of the same magnitude as the majority of known MBCs.

Zusammenfassung
Der Ursprung der hochenergetischen kosmischen Strahlung bleibt ein Rätsel der modernen Hochenergie‐Astrophysik. Auch wenn die Theorie der Teilchenbeschleunigung in relativistischen ...Schocks von Gammastrahlenblitzen es nicht verbietet, so war die bisherige theoretische Erwartung, dass diese Objekte Teilchen nur auf begrenzte Energien beschleunigen sollten. Die kürzlich mit dem Teleskopsystem H.E.S.S. gemachte Entdeckung von Teraelektronenvolt‐Gammastrahlung von einem Gammastrahlenblitz in der kosmischen Nachbarschaft stellt diese Überzeugung in Frage. Die theoretische Modellierung der mit H.E.S.S. gemessenen Gammastrahlung legt nahe, dass Gammablitze sehr viel effizientere Teilchenbeschleuniger sein könnten als gedacht. Unter Umständen sind Gammastrahlenausbrüche sogar die bislang vergeblich gesuchten Quellen der höchstenergetischen kosmischen Strahlung. Sollte sich diese Hypothese bestärken, würde das bedeuten, dass die etablierten Theorien der Teilchenbeschleunigung in relativistischen Schocks eine gründliche Überarbeitung benötigen.
Seit ihrer Urgeschichte haben Menschen den Nachthimmel mit ehrfürchtigem Staunen bewundert. Auch wenn ein Großteil des Nachthimmels unveränderlich erscheint, weiß man schon seit langer Zeit, dass einige der hellsten Objekte nur temporär am Himmel aufleuchten. Das gilt insbesondere für Supernovae, die nun auch neues Licht auf eines der ungelösten Rätsel der Astrophysik werfen. Denn der Ursprung der höchstenergetischen kosmischen Strahlungsteilchen ist unbekannt. Können sterbende massive Sterne eine der lang gesuchten Quellen sein?

A tunable mid-infrared differential absorption lidar (DIAL) mounted on a mobile platform has been built for long range remote detection of thiodiglycol (TDG) vapor plumes. The IR spectra of TDG have been analyzed from available spectroscopy database and from the laboratory measurement. Based on the analysis, laser wavelengths at 3.190 and 3.300 μm have been selected as λon (strong absorption) and λoff (weak absorption) in the measurements. The influence of interfering molecules at these wavelengths has been also studied. The lidar return signal and sensitivity of the system have been numerically simulated based on the system parameters. The experimental DIAL system has been built using an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based tunable laser operating in the wavelength band 3.0–3.45 μm as a transmitter and Cassegrain telescope having 200 mm diameter mirror integrated with thermoelectric cooled mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector as a receiver. The trans-receiver system is mounted on a pan-tilt that enables the aerial scanning operations. The lidar subsystems have been assembled and integrated on a mobile platform for conducting field experiments. An initial field testing of the system has been carried out at a remote site using the enclosed chamber containing the TDG vapor. The chamber was erected at a distance of about 950 m acted as a topographic target that reflected the laser radiation. The differential absorption signal in terms of signal ratio has been monitored continuously in real time during the trial period. The varying column content ranging from 10 to 200 ppm × m under dynamic atmospheric conditions has been calculated and discussed in this paper.
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menghasilkan modul praktikum teleskop reflektor berbasis model PDEODE guna meningkatkan pemahaman konsep mahasiswa. Untuk mengetahui tingkat kelayakan modul ...praktikum tersebut maka dilakukan uji kelayakan terhadap produk. Uji kelayakan yang dilakukan terhadap produk terbagi menjadi tiga, uji kelayakan media, uji kelayakan materi, dan uji respon mahasiswa. Berdasarkan hasil uji media yang dilakukan diperoleh skor rata-rata sebesar 3,55 dan dikategorikan sangat baik, hasil uji materi yang dilakukan diperoleh skor rata-rata sebesar 2,98 dan dikategorikan baik. Hasil analisis penilaian respon mahasiswa yang dilakukan terhadap sembilan mahasiswa semester V Program Studi Pendidikan Fisika Universitas Tadulako diperoleh skor rata-rata sebesar 2,97 dengan presentase sebesar 74,18% dan dikategorikan setuju. Hasil penelitian menunjukan modul praktikum yang dikembangkan dapat dijadikan sebagai salah satu alat penunjang dalam proses pembelajaran mahasiswa.
Teleskop bintang merupakan suatu perangkat instrumen penglihatan yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk melihat benda yang letaknya jauh agar terlihat lebih dekat dan jelas, dalam penggunaannya dibutuhkan ...setidaknya keterampilan teknis dan pengetahuan mengenai peta langit. Hal ini membuat penggunaan teleskop menjadi tidak efektif. Dengan demikian, perlunya dibuat suatu perangkat pengendali pergerakan teleskop dengan memanfaatkan personal computer sebagai pengontrolnya namun tetap berbantuan manusia. Aktuator untuk teleskop menggunakan dua buah motor servo yang memiliki nilai torsi berbeda disesuaikan dengan beban yang digunakan. Masing-masing motor servo akan menggerakan teleskop arah sumbu-X dan sumbu-Y. Pengujian perangkat dilakukan dengan menggunakan laser pointer mainan yang dipasang pada ujung teleskop yang mengarah ke sudut layar untuk menghitung besarnya sudut gerak teleskop. Sudut input dimasukan pada antarmuka yang terpasang pada personal computer menggunakan perangkat lunak Visual Basic 6.0.
Near real-time detection and identification of explosives from safe distances remains a challenging defense technology that requires both scientific and engineering perspectives in the design and ...development. Here, we demonstrated a cost-effective standoff Raman system for detecting explosive materials from distances up to 30 m. The optical system consists of an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope for Raman scattering light collection, while a compact grism was used to generate Raman spectrogram. An image intensifier from night vision technology was incorporated for amplifying the extremely weak Raman spectrum to a level detectable by a thermoelectric-cooled CMOS camera. A nanosecond pulsed laser at 440 nm with peak power of 0.41 MW was used as an excitation source, and the standoff Raman measurement was performed for test samples, including Ba(NO3)2, BaSO4 and NaNO3 powders. The spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio performance of the system were evaluated for the samples placed at distances of 10, 20 and 30 m. It was found that the standoff Raman system can resolve such Raman spectra, showing clear characteristic peaks of Ba(NO3)2, BaSO4 and NaNO3 at 1,045.9, 986.4 and 1,066.5 cm−1, respectively. These spectrum results agree well with the Raman spectra obtained from a standard close-range Raman system.

Mit dem ersten direkten Nachweis von Gravitationswellen wurde nicht nur die letzte Vorhersage der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie bestätigt, sondern auch ein neues Fenster zur ...Beobachtung des Universums geöffnet. Zentrales Messinstrument ist ein Michelson‐Interferometer, das mit vielen neuen Techniken eine extrem hohe Empfindlichkeit und Genauigkeit erreicht. Die nun mögliche Gravitationswellenastronomie erlaubt es, Bereiche und Phänomene zu beobachten, die den Astronomen bisher verschlossen blieben.
Es brauchte Jahrzehnte geduldiger Vorbereitungen, bevor das Kunststück schließlich gelang: der erstmalige direkte Nachweis von Gravitationswellen, deren Existenz Albert Einstein vor hundert Jahren vorhersagte. Weltweit berichteten die Medien darüber. Wie kam es zu dieser Entdeckung?

Profesor astronomije Sveučilišta u Beču hrvatskog porijekla, Dragutin Rakoš, (Štefanje, 1. studenog 1925. − 31. listopada 2011., Beč) za dopisnog člana Hrvatske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti ...izabran je 2000. godine. Bilo je to priznanje ne samo za njegov znanstveni doprinos astronomiji već i za njegov nesebičan i neumoran poticaj i doprinos razvoju astronomije i astrofizike u domovini. Na njegov je prijedlog pokrenuta studijska grupa iz astrofizike, u okviru studija fizike na Prirodoslovno-matematičkom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu. Bez njegova predanog zalaganja ne bi došlo do donacije i postavljanja austrijskog 1-m teleskopa na otoku Hvaru. Uvijek je sa zanimanjem i pažnjom pratio razvoj astronomije u domovini, nastojeći pripomoći i usmjeriti je u svjetske tokove.
