This volume provides specific answers to hard questions about how to create valid metrics to measure the effectiveness of tourism advertising and the usefulness of destination marketing websites. An ...extensive literature review describes 40+ years of research on the effectiveness of tourism advertising and the slow advancement to using valid impact metrics - field experiments with alternative ad treatment and placements. Several authors undertake information-usefulness audits on DMO (destination management office) websites and provide practical check lists. Tourism website comparisons include: Maine, Massachusetts and New York; Genoa, Marseilles and Valencia; France, Spain and Portugal; and China, Poland, Russia and Thailand, against each other as well as the Lonely Planet websites. Content analysis of consumer-generated advertisements that promote visits to third places, in this case Starbucks coffee shops and Chipotle restaurants, makes an intriguing study. The final paper gives a thick description of the dynamics of the government's role in shaping China's domestic, inbound, and outbound tourism industry and contributes to building a behavioral theory of government-firm relationships.
The role of government in destination development is not a new topic; however, the way the government can impact tourism destination development is still under research. This study addresses such ...issues, specifically, striving to shed some light on the aspects of importance/performance as it relates to destination management. By understanding such relationships, government officials (at local and state levels) will be able to create specific policies/procedures that would facilitate tourism development. This study utilizes importance/performance methodology to analyze three types of regions (mountain, spa, and wine) in the Czech Republic. The results indicate that variations among the regions exist in terms of areas of importance and performance and point out opportunities for further improvements. Thorough discussions and implications for the industry are made along with suggestions for future research.
In recent decades, rising consumer interest in visiting relatively less commercialized natural destinations has facilitated the growth of ecotourism. Yet the research on ecotourism is fragmented, ...presenting gaps in the current understanding of this topic. This study performs a bibliometric analysis to assimilate the present knowledge from a total of 878 articles published in six reputable outlets between 1990 and 2019. The study analyzed citation chains and coauthorship networks to acknowledge contributions from select authors, organizations, and countries. Next, a cocitation analysis of the prior literature identified four major thematic areas: ecological preservation, residents' interests, the carbon footprint, and tourists' behaviors. Further, a dynamic cocitation analysis technique mapped the development of these thematic areas. Subsequently, a content analysis of the four thematic areas delivered significant insights about prior research in the domain and indicated future avenues of research.
•This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 878 articles on ecotourism.•Four major thematic areas are identified from the literature on ecotourism.•The first thematic area highlights the need for the ecological preservation of tourist destinations.•The second thematic area advocates for protecting residents' interests in ecotourist destinations.•The third thematic area raises concerns about the carbon footprint from tourist mobility.•The fourth thematic area discusses tourists' attitudes and behavior toward sustainability.
Tourism can be considered by its characteristics, as a vector of globalization, since it promotes the movement of ideas, people, goods and capital worldwide. This study aims to assess the main shortcomings of the current state of the university training process of human resources of tourism and its need for improvement in line with the demands of the labor market.

A large number of destinations have been experimenting a changeover from the current massified cultural tourism to a creative tourism model. In this new model of tourism, urban territories have been ...privileged by its implementation, and in the past 20 years, urban studies on cultural and creative industries and initiatives have been taking place in large cities marginalizing small-sized cities and specifically rural areas. Urban areas revealed to have a more active and diverse creative tourism activities. The results provide the need for more consolidated communication strategies and partnerships for these activities to become economically more sustainable. In addition, this research provides researchers and practitioners relevant information of how creative tourism is developed in rural and urban territories, the gaps and lack of information, and all the possible directions toward the development of the creative tourism industry.

This paper explores motivations for diasporic medical tourism. Using a qualitative method it seeks to understand diasporic medical tourism behaviour. Specifically, it examines the case of the Polish ...diaspora in Belgium making return trips to their country of origin to obtain healthcare services. Narratives suggest that the Polish diaspora in Belgium travels primarily for VFR (visiting friends and relatives), yet medical tourism constitutes a secondary reason while it is well planned and organized up-front. Four motivational factors have an influence on this behaviour: time availability (by-the-by), relative cost, shopping for the best quality and cultural affinity. Furthermore, managerial and theoretical implications of diasporic medical tourism are discussed as well as recommendations for future research.
