South Africa has much to offer in terms of tourism attractions and destinations. The tourism industry strives to meet the requirements of various forms of tourism by providing facilities and services ...to meet the unique needs of visitors. One such service is tourist guiding at specific attractions and destinations. Tourist guides in South Africa are required to be qualified and registered with the relevant authorities. To date, only limited research has been done to determine the profile of tourist guides operating in South Africa. The main objective of this study was, therefore, to develop a profile of the South African tourist guide. The study adopted a quantitative research approach using a survey research design. The target population consisted of registered tourist guides in South Africa, and 320 questionnaires were completed and analysed. The main findings of the study revealed that the majority of respondents were citizens of South Africa with English as their home language and may considered to be young, according to their age profile. The findings of this study contribute to the limited academic research on the profile of tourist guides in South Africa and will be beneficial to travel agents, tour operators, protected areas and other tourism operating companies by enabling them to employ the most suitable candidate for the required service.
According to the Indonesian Tourism Association statutes 2011, tour guideshave several duties, one of them is improving consecutively their professionalism. The indicator which can be indicated from ...their professionalism is their capability in doing well communication with their colleague or tourist particularly communication in English. Related to the daily activity, wheneverI invite them to make an English tour none of them ready to execute it. It one of the symptoms shows that they have limit capability in English communication. To solve this problem, I and team have trained them in English for tourist guide in several meetings. As a result, this English tourist guide training can develop their capability in making English communicationas long as they want to practice their English with their colleague or by them selves
This research presents a mobile augmented reality (MAR) travel guide, named CorfuAR, which supports personalized recommendations. We report the development process and devise a theoretical model that ...explores the adoption of MAR applications through their emotional impact. A field study on Corfu visitors (n=105) shows that the functional properties of CorfuAR evoke feelings of pleasure and arousal, which, in turn, influence the behavioral intention of using it. This is the first study that empirically validates the relation between functional system properties, user emotions, and adoption behavior. The paper discusses also the theoretical and managerial implications of our study.
Tourist guides (TGs), who are among the most important employees of the tourism sector, have a very important role in tourist satisfaction. While the effect of TRs on performance criteria and tourist ...satisfaction in foreign literature is the subject of many studies; a limited number of studies were found in the Turkish literature.Evaluation of the guidance service provided in places visited by millions of tourists every year, such as the Ancient City of Ephesus, is a necessity in order to meet the ever-changing market expectations. In line with this scope, the aim of the study is to reveal the effect of the performance of TRs on the satisfaction of tourists. Questionnaire technique, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the study. The population of the research consists of domestic tourists visiting Ephesus between July and September 2021. As a sample, the easy sampling method, which is one of the non-probabilistic sampling methods, was preferred and a total of 399 data were collected. The obtained data were analyzed by the least squares method and and structural equation modeling. According to the results of the analysis, entertainment introduction skill, appearance, problem solving skills and organizational skills of TRs affect the satisfaction of domestic tourists in a meaningful and positive way. Empathy, professional competence and communication skills of TGs remained below the expectations of domestic tourists.

► City Trip Planner integrates selection of attractions with routing between them. ► It provides personalised interest estimation. ► The real-time planning takes into account personal constraints and ...opening hours. ► Usage statistics and user feedback demonstrate the appreciation by tourists.
Over the last few years, advanced digital applications have become available to tourists. Some of these offer the possibility of creating personalised routes. This paper introduces a tourist expert system, called the City Trip Planner, that allows planning routes for five cities in Belgium. It is implemented as a web application that takes into account the interests and trip constraints of the user and matches these to a database of locations in order to predict personal interests. A fast and effective planning algorithm provides an on-the-fly suggestion of a personal trip for a requested number of days, taking into account opening hours of attractions and time for a (lunch) break. The expert system is discussed in detail. Usage statistics and user feedback demonstrate that it is highly appreciated by tourists.
The aim of this paper is to examine how new technologies shape the experience of the tourist. This is to further theunderstanding of tourism’s place in a technologically-driven age. The methodology ...of the study includes an analysis, comparison and evaluation of elements and factors involved in contributing to a quality tourist experience. Theexperience of the tourist is a personal and individualistic occurrence and can be improved with the help of both newtechnologies and the tourist guide. The finding that is made is that both the personal touch of the tourist guide as wellas the interactive features of technology have a place in the provision of quality tourism experiences. This in turn impliesthat both tourist guides and new technologies should be included in the tourism experience. Only then can a qualitytourism experience be provided for the 21st century tourist. There are many papers examining the experience of thetourist. However, few have looked at the implications of the development of new technologies on the experience of thetourist. This article suggests a scale on which the tourist experience can be based on, in relation to both tourist guidesand new technologies.
The tourist trip design problem (TTDP) refers to a route-planning problem for tourists interested in visiting multiple points of interest (POIs). TTDP solvers derive daily tourist tours, i.e., ...ordered visits to POIs, which respect tourist constraints and POIs attributes. The main objective of the problem discussed is to select POIs that match tourist preferences, thereby maximizing tourist satisfaction, while taking into account a multitude of parameters and constraints (e.g., distances among POIs, visiting time required for each POI, POIs visiting days/hours, entrance fees, weather conditions) and respecting the time available for sightseeing on a daily basis. The aim of this work is to survey models, algorithmic approaches and methodologies concerning tourist trip design problems. Recent approaches are examined, focusing on problem models that best capture a multitude of realistic POIs attributes and user constraints; further, several interesting TTDP variants are investigated. Open issues and promising prospects in tourist trip planning research are also discussed.

The study aims to identify the tourist guide’s role and importance, as a mediator between demand and supply, between tourists and local collectivities in the support of local economy and sustainable ...tourism, within tourist destinations’ areas. The current study was meant to highlight the degree to which tourist guides of Romania promote and abide by the sustainability issues in their guiding activity. This fact emerges alongside the development and expanding of tourist activities and subsequently human pressure on the natural milieu. A close-questions’ questionnaire was applied to seventy national tourist guides, with a national geographical coverage of over 50%, who participated at the annual national tourist guides’ conference of Oradea city in the year 2017. The results showed that, in their guiding activity, guides promote host-guest interractions, encourage tourists to buy products from locals and care about vulnerable destinations.
Tourist guides are considered as one of the most important stakeholders in the tourism sector. Tourist guides have important duties both in terms of the development of the sector and in determining ...the quality of the service that tourists receive. In
