The article provides a glance at the continuing transformation in the profession of translators and its implications on translator training. The profile of the translatorhas never been unified but ...nowadays, following the pandemic situation in the year 2020, the profession undergoes a significant shift as a result of the economic situation and the effects of the pandemic restrictions on the condition of the labour market. The widespread use of technology and new requirements involving distance learning call for rethinking the aims of translator training.
The primary purpose of the article is to signal the need for adapting translator training to foster better metacognitive skills that help translation students adapt to the evolving market. The article makes an attempt to look at the potential of distance translator training for introducing more professionalization into translator education. Moving outside the regular translation classroom to virtual training environments can in fact entail the learner transformation not only as regards technology immersion but also their autonomy.
The articles collected in this issue of "Przekładaniec" are the aftermath of the 1st Congress of Polish Translation Studies, which took place in May 2022 in Krakow.
In a corpus approach to empirical translation study, I compare three re-translations of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse into Italian by Nadia Fusini in the 1990s and 2012 with the first ...translation by Giulia Celenza, published in 1934. The focus is on how and to what degree those translations render the modernist characteristics of the source text. The adopted method is implemented using suitable annotations of the digital texts. All the occurrences of linguistic and extra-linguistic features, including the stream of consciousness, indirect interior monologue and free indirect discourse, are identified and manually tagged in xml/tei code throughout the texts examined. A bespoke computer program is used to extract, align and compare the literary features. The results show the translators’ target-culture orientation in both ‘distant’ and ‘close reading’, with interesting instances of source text-orientation in the later re-translations.
The following article discusses some problems in the translation of the German comic book “Der Fönig” into Polish. The main concern is to define the semantic dominant of the source text correctly and ...to find any adequate translation possibilities of language phenomena, which could contribute to problems in the translator’s work. As the source text has not been translated into Polish yet, the author presents his own translation proposals of two problematic fragments of the German original.
In the article, the problem of text-normative equivalence has been addressed. It was introduced by W. Koller in 1979, but so far it has not been further developed in the literature. Preserving ...textual and normative equivalence is particularly important in the translation of law texts. Therefore, the question arises about the parameters of equivalence. The article shows that in law acts such objective parameters are the specific attendance and distribution of lexical resources. They allow for a precise establishment of normative equivalents in the target language.
The article focuses on the Polish translation of The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook. The author provides examples which prove that Toklas’s book may be read as a functional text as well as an artistic ...cookbook. Nevertheless, the Polish translation narrow this possibility to functional text or a narration on cooking while the comments on its cultural, autobiographical and social aspects seem to be lost in translation.
This article is devoted to the translation of the film “Sara” done using the voice-over technique and subtitles. The analysed film is one of the Polish classic film productions of the ‘90s. The ...peculiar character of film dialogues requires that the translator adopts translation techniques which do not conform with technical requirements for selected techniques that are applied in audio-visual translation. The viewer needs to have additional competences including the knowledge of linguistic norms, cinematographic traditions, customs, etc., in order to get a proper understanding of a specific scene.
