The design and manipulation of typefaces and fonts is an area requiring substantial expertise; it can take many years of study to become a proficient typographer. At the same time, the use of ...typefaces is ubiquitous; there are many users who, while not experts, would like to be more involved in tweaking or changing existing fonts without suffering the learning curve of professional typography packages.
Given the wealth of fonts that are available today, we would like to exploit the expertise used to produce these fonts, and to enable everyday users to create, explore, and edit fonts. To this end, we build a generative manifold of standard fonts. Every location on the manifold corresponds to a unique and novel typeface, and is obtained by learning a non-linear mapping that intelligently interpolates and extrapolates existing fonts. Using the manifold, we can smoothly interpolate and move between existing fonts. We can also use the manifold as a constraint that makes a variety of new applications possible. For instance, when editing a single character, we can update all the other glyphs in a font simultaneously to keep them compatible with our changes.
Individuated font selection, which can increase text reading speed, may be able to increase mathematical expression reading speed and influence reasoning accuracy. To investigate whether the same ...font that increases a participant’s reading speed enhances mathematical reading, we compared their speed in evaluating mathematical expressions as true or false presented in their fastest reading font as determined by empirical test and with a control font, Times Roman. Participants were faster in completing mathematical problems when using typography selected for individual readability, but no difference occurred in task accuracy, matching patterns previously seen in interlude reading. Future research should assess the impact of elements of time pressure, math complexity, numeric versus text-based questions, and associated math anxiety.

This is the first monograph on Scandinavia's 'new typography'. It provides a detailed account of the movement’s lifespan in the region from the 1920s up until the 1940s, when it was largely ...incorporated into mainstream practice. The book begins by tracing how new typography, from its origins in the central and eastern European avant-garde, arrived in Scandinavia. It considers the movement’s transformative impact on printing, detailing the cultural and technological reasons why its ability to act as a modernising force varied between different professional groups. The last two chapters look at how New Typography related to Scandinavian society more widely by looking at its ties to functionalism and social democracy, paving the way for a discussion of the reciprocal relationship between the culture of practitioners and the cultural work performed through their practice. Based on archival research undertaken at a number of Scandinavian institutions, the book brings a wealth of previously unpublished visual material to light and provides a fresh perspective on a movement of central and enduring importance to graphic design history and practice.

After sixty years, the work on the Hamburg Klopstock edition is nearing completion. That is reason enough to recall the planned and unplanned, the institutional, material, financial and personal ...conditions under which this complete edition has become what currently distinguishes it from comparable German-language editions of poets. The conceptual and methodical characteristics are described that allow the Hamburg Klopstock edition to be classified in terms of the history of scholarly editing: the strong author-centrism in the volumes of the Works section of the edition; the explanations as a focus in the reader-friendly volumes of the correspondence as well as the methodical innovations in the Addenda section in the form of the genetic prose text representation (Addenda II) and the bibliographical description of the prints of Klopstock’s works based on the model of the Anglo-American analytical bibliography (Addenda III). The typographic design is another characteristic of this edition.
