AbstractIn January 1945 Arts & Architecture launched the Case Study House program, an experiment devised by John Entenza that would reserve for him and his magazine an important place in the history of modern architecture of the twentieth century. From the moment he took over the direction of Arts & Architecture in 1940, Entenza knew how to seduce creators and artists such as Alvin Lustig, Ray and Charles Eames, Herbert Matter and Julius Shulman, who contributed to raise the graphic standard of his publication and gave it an innovative identity that visually supported the avant-garde intellectual discourse of commitment to modern architecture and design that it defended in its pages. This article analyzesthe origins, the strategies of transformation and the proper names that made the magazine a reality that, fifty years after its disappearance in 1967, continues to be as attractive and radical as when it was published.
Does syntax highlighting help programming novices? Hannebauer, Christoph; Hesenius, Marc; Gruhn, Volker

Program comprehension is an important skill for programmers - extending and debugging existing source code is part of the daily routine. Syntax highlighting is one of the most common tools used to ...support developers in understanding algorithms. However, most research on code highlighting is more than 20 years old, when programmers used a completely different tool chain. Newer results on the effect of syntax highlighting as used in modern Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) are inconclusive.
Packaging is seen as an integral part of the product and it has an important role in attracting consumers’ attention. The role of packaging is to create an expected reaction from the consumers, which ...affects their perception and choice of products in the buying process. The motivation for the research and writing of this paper was to find out which factors influence the purchase of chocolate the most. The research was done with the purpose of showing whether the same food products have a certain advantage in the process of choosing when presented to a potential consumer on two different media (analog and digital). The paper presents research on how the selected attributes and packaging elements, as well as the application of augmented reality (AR), affect the selection and purchase of one of the most popular food products. According to the obtained results, “Packaging appearance”, “Product Price”, “Brand preference” and “Product advertising” have the strongest influence on customers. The conclusion is that, in the process of choosing the chocolate packaging presented in this research, there is not much difference that depends on the medium those chocolates are presented on.

Research is only half the work; the other half is writing and publishing. Your research is incomplete until you publish your data.1 Publishing is necessary but insufficient: others must cite your ...work.2 Writing well and preparing a coherent story will help your paper get past the first hurdle in the publishing process –the copy editor. The second hurdle is the editor, who checks if it is suitable for the journal, and reviews the , conclusions, and references.3 The final hurdle is the reviewers, who devote more time to validate the hypotheses, results, and interpretation. Rejection rates across journals are increasing.4 Science copy editors send one out of five submissions to the editors, and their overall rejection rate is 93 %. The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering rejects close to 3 out of 4 papers researchers submit. Write better so journals accept your papers and researchers cite them.
Despite the dynamic and interactive features of digital text, the visual design guidelines for digital text are similar to those for printed text. The purpose of this study was to develop visual ...design guidelines for improving learning from dynamic and interactive digital text and to validate them by controlled testing. Two structure design guidelines (for enhancing text structure comprehension) and two selective-attention design guidelines (for maintaining the learners' attention on the essential contents) were developed based on the psychological and instructional, technological foundations that can affect the visual design of digital text. In this study, a 2 × 2 factorial design with 141 university students was used to examine the effectiveness of the visual design guidelines. The university students had 20 min to study a piece of digital text with the structure design guidelines, selective-attention design guidelines, both, or no design guidelines applied. Both the structure and selective-attention design guidelines had a positive influence on text structure understanding, essential contents comprehension and usability of digital text. The suggested visual design guidelines were found to be useful for enhancing text comprehension.
► Two structure design guidelines were developed. ► Two selective-attention design were developed. ► These guidelines were developed based on three important foundations. ► The effects of the visual design guidelines were examined.
"A Prince Went up a Tree" traces the reversal of unlettered Native and lettered colonist in the Wampanoag Bible (1663). Focusing on the acorn-shaped printers' flowers that obsessively decorate the ...Bible, the article follows the Restoration motif that cleverly appropriates Charles II's escape in an oak tree from English pottery, snuffboxes, and delicate cut-paper work across the Atlantic to the first printing press at Harvard college and the Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project.
•This study expanded font selection into the emotional cognitive domain.•The classification system utilizes emotional key attributes using W3C standard.•Emotion-based classification system has ...similar effects to the visual shape based one.•Users can easily use emotion-based searches and increase font product exposure.•It provides the basis for expanding the Korean font market as a cultural product.
Emotion analysis of text documents is an emerging area of interest, and it is closely related to the visualization of emotions and sentiments. There is a need to consider a different setting for emotion visualization of text through fonts since typography forms a huge part of visualization. Several studies were conducted on techniques that use content expressions that match the context and the font emotion, including textual sentiment in combination. However, studies on emotion with regard to the Korean Hangul fonts have thus far not yielded a consensus. Therefore, we propose a Hangul font recommendation system that uses emotion classification properties extended from a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard and is based on a Maximum likelihood estimation approach with crowdsourced attribute values. We verified the reliability and validity of the emotion attributes as applied to Hangul fonts and compared the efficiency of shape-, purpose-, and emotion-based recommendations. We show that users can find the appropriate font based on emotion recognition in a commercial font set using this system.

The author of The Footnote reflects on scribes, scholars, and the work of publishing during the golden age of the book. From Francis Bacon to Barack Obama, thinkers and political leaders have ...denounced humanists as obsessively bookish and allergic to labor. In this celebration of bookmaking in all its messy and intricate detail, renowned historian Anthony Grafton invites us to see the scholars of early modern Europe as diligent workers. Meticulously illuminating the physical and mental labors that fostered the golden age of the book—the compiling of notebooks, copying and correction of texts and proofs, preparation of copy—he shows us how the exertions of scholars shaped influential books, treatises, and forgeries. Inky Fingers ranges widely, tracing the transformation of humanistic approaches to texts in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and examining the simultaneously sustaining and constraining effects of theological polemics on sixteenth- century scholars. Grafton draws new connections between humanistic traditions and intellectual innovations, textual learning and craft knowledge, manuscript and print.Above all, Grafton makes clear that the nitty-gritty of bookmaking has had a profound impact on the history of ideas—that the life of the mind depends on the work of the hands.
