In this paper we study the role of Video on Demand services (VOD) as drivers of broadband adoption. While the research literature has highlighted the importance of digital content, such as ...applications and Internet platforms, as a driver of broadband adoption, no studies have yet explored the specific contribution of VOD. We developed a worldwide database of VOD services launch by country since 2012 (including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+, and HBO Max) and explored their contribution as contributors to broadband adoption during the period. To do so, we relied on several empirical specifications including instrumental variables to control for reverse causality between broadband adoption and VOD services availability. Our results confirm that VOD services have been a key contributor to the increase of broadband connectivity, also helping to narrow down the digital divide especially in developing nations. In addition, VOD service offers have been associated with the gradual increase in the purchasing of broadband higher speed plans. Finally, there is a significant and positive increase in consumer surplus associated with the launch of VOD offers. This evidence points to the impact of VOD services on the digital economy as a stimulus for consumer acquisition of broadband services and therefore as a contributor to the revenues of broadband service providers.

The article portrays and analyses the availability and prominence of Spanish works in the following five subscription video-on-demand services (SVOD) offered in Spain: Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+ and Apple TV+. The data from the fieldwork, carried out on samples obtained from their catalogues in January 2022 and 2023, shows how many Spanish works are available in these services, their main characteristics and the level of prominence these works receive. It is concluded that, although all the catalogues analysed offer Spanish films and series, the quantity of works varies greatly between the different services and is mostly constituted by feature films and fiction produced in Spanish. Regarding prominence, Netflix provides more features to find Spanish films and series, while the other services have ample room for improvement. Keywords:Audiovisual industry; streaming; diversity; prominence; video on demand.
This article highlights and discusses the main findings from three different media production studies (2016, 2019, and 2022) investigating the changing production culture of the schedulers in public ...service media. The inclusion of a broadcaster video-on-demand (BVoD) service in the broadcaster's portfolio affected the production culture. First, the article argues that profound changes happened to the organisational framing of the BVoD service's status and its impact on the production practices. Second, the article shows the BVoD service's impact on the content priorities among the schedulers at TV 2 in Denmark and third, how the public service branding of TV 2 became more explicit in the production culture. However, across these three points of impact and the shifts in the strategic focus at TV 2, the business model at TV 2 and its interplay with the public service obligations runs as an undercurrent.
•Internet protocol television recommendation based on information fusion is proposed.•Over-the-top data are added to solve data sparsity problem.•Actual internet protocol television data are used for ...evaluation.•An explicit information fusion approach can improve accuracy of recommendation.
Internet protocol television (IPTV) provides video on demand (VOD), internet service, and real-time broadcasting to users as a service that combines broadcasting and communication technology. Among various services, the sales of VOD are profitable because VODs offer relatively strong direct revenue models in IPTV services. However, the development of a VOD recommender system for IPTV service is highly challenging owing to the lack of explicit preference information of users in an IPTV environment. Previous studies for IPTV VOD recommender systems have attempted to solve the data sparsity problem through implicit preference information; however, it is better to utilize explicit preference information to improve the performance of system. Recently, IPTV service providers have provided their own over-the-top (OTT) services such that explicit preference information of users for items can be combined. Therefore, we proposed a novel information fusion method for an IPTV VOD recommender system that integrates the explicit information of both IPTV and OTT services. In addition, we utilized the probabilistic matrix factorization, that guarantees high performance in most recommender systems, as a recommender algorithm in this study. Finally, we conducted comparative evaluations based on various metrics and validated that the information fusion of IPTV and OTT services contribute to the IPTV VOD recommender system.
Branding has been described as the defining industrial practice of television’s recent past. This article examines publicly available industry documents, trade press coverage, and executive ...interviews to understand the place of traditional television network branding in subscription video on-demand (SVOD) portals as represented by Amazon and Netflix. Focusing on materials relating to licensed rather than original content and this content’s role within the US domestic SVOD market, two distinct approaches emerge. For Amazon, the brand identities of some television networks act as valuable lures drawing customers into its Prime membership program. For Netflix, linear television networks are competitors whose brand identities reduce Netflix’s own brand equity. Ultimately, Amazon’s efforts to build a streaming service alongside network brand identities and Netflix’s efforts to build its own brand at the expense of such identities demonstrate the need to think about contemporary television branding as an ongoing negotiation between established and emerging practices.

This research examines how the adjustment of price and delay in the sequential distribution of simultaneously available digital products can maximize revenues. In this dynamic digital market, ...consumers can choose between different versions of movies that are available after their initial theatrical release. An analysis of weekly sales data of 1,397 movies with more than 50,000 observations, in a random effect control function generalized least square panel model, reveals an inverted U-shaped delay effect. That is, too short and too long delays after the initial cinematic release are both suboptimal. Price and delay interact positively with each other too, such that if the delay is too short, the negative influence of the price becomes amplified. By testing the effects of multiple other success factors, some of which have not been investigated before, this research also reveals pertinent, novel interactions of these variables with price and delay. Finally, to encourage the practical application of these comprehensive results, the authors present an interactive dashboard that managers can use to simulate the optimal price and delay for the different product versions.
This article explores the relationship between television and video on demand (VOD), focusing specifically on Netflix and its recent move to produce and distribute original serialised drama. Drawing ...on a number of conceptualisations of contemporary media, this article positions Netflix within a contemporary media landscape, paying particular attention to how it relates to branding strategies of multi-platform serialised content and subscription cable channels in the United States. It considers Netflix-produced season 4 of Arrested Development (Fox, 2003–2013, Netflix, 2013) as a case study to explore how Netflix positions itself in relation to contemporary ‘quality’ and ‘cult’ TV and associated viewing practices and draws on theories of post-postmodern capitalism to understand its function within a broader socio-political context. As such, it places Netflix within discourses of VOD, TVIII, branding, contemporary viewing practices and consumer practices in post-postmodern capitalism.
